@JKearnsie Actually, it does help. You know, the bottom of the console is the part that heats and if placed on a surface, the surface will also receive heat, so with both the console and the surface overheating the console does not have chance to cool down

i know this is a really stupid question, but how would you know if your ps3 slim overheats? like is there anything that tells you its overheating? someone please reply.

@gameADDICT177 For instance, if you've been plating for around 3 hours you will hear the sound of the backfans go louder, it's a sound you don't hear when you're playing at first, another thing, you touch the console on the bottom and you feel it hot....Hope I helped

just read the ps3 handbook and you will know how to prevent the overheating correctly. your problem is, that the console is in a to the back closed shelf since its at the wall. ps3 needs like 15" inch open area to the back,left,right and top because the slim only got 2 cooling fans and the heat is gonna get stuck inside the console. get your console out of that shelf and place it somewhere open, i never had any overheating issues with the slim and i own it for 2 summers already.

another cheap way to let air circulation cool the bottom of the console is to buy 4 bigger rubber feet if you dont want to spend money on the vertical stand or additional coolers. im pretty careful with my own ps3 slim. its got rubber feet, its partly in the open and when im not playing i cover it with a tiny blanket to "guard" it from unwanted dust while its off. i also bought additional 3 years warranty x3 so im (was) safe for 5 years.

of course at some point, if youve always kept the ps3 in your shelf, it will get heat damaged and overheat or shut down like this every time.

@Epic457 The PS3 doesn't overheat, only within months or years, and if you play it for like 7-8 hours straight.

You play an hour or two, the internal temperature will rise, but the system will kick hotness through the back, you can touch your console after 90 min, and it will seem hot, especially in the back, but that's just the hot air comming out

XBOX has already given everything it could while the best of PS3 is yet to come

I've had the same PS3 for over 2 years and it doesn't freeze, it doesn't bring trouble of overheating and It's online department works excelente (no lag, no kick-out of games, no troubles finding games)

if it does get to hot 150degress a box will come up on the screen telling you to shut it down

it will also change fan speeds at 150degress the fan will be screaming and air will be coming out of the ps3 very very rapidly.
