I have always had a fascination with horse racing ever since I was little. I love the horses and the excitement. I don't why they can't makes some changes to make things safer. Why do they have to race at such a young, underdeveloped age? Why on such a big track, do they have to race so close together? And you can't be blind to what this sport is really about..$. I know it's true, because if it wasn't the SPCA here in Miami wouldn't be overloaded with thoroughbred horses that were either left w
Correct well done, racing isn't cruel, sure you get the exception where a muppet will abuse a horse and he is kicked out of the sport straight away, the people that say racing is cruel really do not know about the sport.... But you don't know what goes on behind the scenes.... Shut up, you are putting everyone into a group, 1/1000 stables will abuse a horse the rest treat them better than themselves, come on mis-informed morons have a go back at me....
If you would just take a second to research into the facts, you wouldn't do something like that. Therefore, i'm more inclined to believe that you are willfully lying. And what is your motive? To garner more views and be more popular on youtube to satisfy some sick & twisted psychological state you are definitely in? If you saw know the ugliness behind the glamour of horse racing /jumping or whatever horse 'sports' you will not do this. so in conclusion, you are a sick liar. Yes and that is true.
You are either lying or ignorant. I can't believe u posted a video on youtube knowing full well that it will be watched by people all over the world, and with the title of you video, there will be a significant interest in your video, so why wouldn't you do proper research before showing something as grossly misinformed as this? Don't you know that it will affect people's perception and contribute to more cruelty? Yes horse-racing is animal cruelty.
Many horses are born every year for racing, just to be killed because they aren't worth the money to train. Horses are also often raced before their skeletal systems have fully developed, and may be drugged-bronchodilators to widen air passages, hormones to increase oxygen-carrying red blood cells, cone snail or cobra venom injected into a horse’s joints to ease pain. Then after they race, many are either killed or end up in cruel, neglectful homes. This video gave no facts, and proved nothing.
and dont say that the barely walking thing never happens because i've seen a 10 year old mare that stagers around and has a really bad sway back from being riden and running hard at such a young age. she can get up and down but sometimes we have to help her up. she gets shots and stuff so i gess shes not in pain but idk shes not mine, i would have put her down so she wouldnt suffer
what happens to him after he runs for about 2 years then can barely walk? slaughter or is he to father tons of foals and live the rest of his life in pain or is he the lucky one that is put to sleep at 3 or 4? oh and the whips? I knew a sweet old gelding that was a race horse and he loved to run but the hit him, he had scars all over him and if you held a whip by him he would pace and snort and shake. I only know 1 english horse that acts like that to a whip but he has good reason.
Okay listen ALL OF YOU HORSE RACE HATERS i love to watch race horses one of my favorites was Hagley's Lion never heard of him? That's because he wasn't a secretariat, seabiscuit, war admiral, man o war, or any of those super famous ones but nothing bad happened to him! Or any of the famous ones I mentioned! Bad things happen to good horse because of BAD OWNERS. I've seen racehorses with they're ears PRICKED FORWARD! that means that they like it! Would you kill a horses joy? Or let them be happ
"Pretty much the same as the last picture, the only difference....." Is that the horse racing industry causes thousands of horses to be born only to be slaughtered or abandoned to an existence of neglect, starvation, and suffering because they're not worth training? Is that race horses frequently suffer injuries because they are forced to train and race before their skeletal system has finished growing? That most ex-race horses are destroyed because they're not worth the cost? Real similar.
but the horses only run because they don't want to be left behind, because in the wild they run in a pac normally they are running from something that is scary to them, like when that bell goes off they want to get away from it. so they are kinda forced to run? i heard this from a horse tv show.
I have been in horse racing all of my life. Let me tell you all ... You can't beat a horse into being a race horse if it doesn't want to be one. Everything I do every single day is for the benefit of the horses in my care. From what I've seen Race horses are the most well cared for horses on earth. (with some exclusions, there are some bad trainers) I've been around show horses and horses kept as pets.I own an OTTB who didn't want to be a racehorse. so he isn't one. hes 4yrs, sound & happy
MOST of the time, they will be slaughtered if they're not making money
The whip is over used, yes hunter/jumpers use whips BUT their main way of getting the horse moving is with leg, not whip. The whip is supposed to be a final resort, not a primary aid.
I think like any sport that involves horses, it depends more on the owners and the trainers. There are some very good race horse owners and trainers who truly love their horses and have passion for what they do. And then you have the people that are only in it for the money and will do whatever it takes to win. You see it all the time at horse shows. The bad people always ruin it for the good people. The majority of race horses are treated like royalty.
(cont'd)... do not help in a horse race when used at the end at all. So why use them? And that little foal? Could be trained to be an eventer or a foxhunter, a showjumper, dressage horse, etc. Just because he was bred to be a racehorse, doesn not mean he can't excel at other disciplines. Look at all the OTTBs out there, retrained and doing well in their new jobs. And yes all horses can get injured, but there are a lot more injuries at the track then in other disciplines. Just my two cents.
Did you ever notice that in the pictures with the horses freely galloping in their paddocks, they have their ears perked and look happy, and when their racing, their ears are pinned and they look miserable? There is a lot more difference between the first two pictures then the added tack and rider. What about when they run the horses at top speed in terrible footing? And yes, other disciplines use whips, but not that much, and not that harshly. They just did a study that proved whips... (cont'd)
horses are NOT forced to race. If they don't want to run, they are withdrawn from the race (scratched) and all bets on the scratched horse are returned.
the whip. if we used it to hurt them, we'd hurt ourselves. horses run from harm and usually by insinct, its not going to run like you want them to. its more like tapping a person to get there attention. if you ever tried punching a horse (not on its face though) all its going to do is look at you like your retarted or just stand there.
Running on flat ground with shoes on is a hell of a lot better than running on crap and messing up your feet. Horses love to run anyway, whether it's on the track or in the wild. One horse could EASILY kill the whole crew of assistant starters if they seriously did not want to go in. If you truly invade their space, they won't hesitate to kill
I am appauled. Do I support slaughter? Of course not! BUT the foal wouldnt be bred in the first place if it wasnt for the grotesque racing industry and so there wouldn't be a horse to slaughter in the first place. You are a disgrace. And you clearly DONT love horses. How else can you explain supporting murder and torture. Racing is just animated roulette. Open YOUR eyes!
while the "happy" pictures in this video are not disturbing, this video FAILS to show the horrific effect that horse racing has on these precious animals. I see no problem with "riding" them on occasion as a hobby, but racing them does not seem to benefit the horse at all. It seems totally selfish!
I hate it when people say it is cruel. It isnt. Horses are born to run, its what they are made for, the run all the time! I am going to be a jockey soon, its not cruel, thankyyou for making this video :D xxx
@xhestjentex Its nnot going to die. I love horses. They retire when they are about 7 so then they go to places like the British Racing School so other people can enjoy the thrill of racing too.
@xhestjentex ur saying hundreds of horses are killed everyday on the race track? Where's the evidence of that? Ur mental. Around the world hundreds of horses break their legs EVERY DAY and are put down or brought back to health through non-racing occurances - just because YOU don't hear about it, doesn't mean it's not happening. (You're not that important). THINK then write. And stop thinking you're opinions are so valid - they're not! Who are you?? NOBODY.
@jus91al YOU are the nobody!! And likewise, you think YOUR opinoons are valid!! NOT! HA! wakey wakey!!! I see nothing but brutes and half dead horses with snapped off limbs which are whipped until they collapse. And YOU, support that?! Racing is just animated roulette. Its just a fast track to someone that doesn't care/isnt experienced or increasingly often the slaughter house. by supporting racing you are supporting horse murder. I have NO respect for you.
@xhestjentex mine are not opinions they are facts - read it again. And who the fuck said I support horse racing? I am merely saying that hundreds of horses break their legs everyday in the field etc. Stop getting so irrate you illiterate fool. I haven't said I enjoy horse racing and I don't support it you retard. Do you think I care if you have no respect for me? No I don't because you are nobody, and you don't even understand what I am saying on here because you are thick, HA.
The difference is; a regular rider isn't going to beat the crap out of their horse or run it so hard it's leg snaps. Horse racing isn't natural nor are a lot other horse sports. I'm very familiar with horses having been around them nearly my entire life. I've seen plenty of races, watched a thoroughbred grow up and start his training but no matter which way I try to look at it, I can't deny the fact that there is cruelty involved here.
Horseracing is like all horse sports, it is dangerous and the horse & rider are a TEAM. Don't comment unless you have actually taken the reins of a thoroughbred off the track. THAT HORSE will never run for you unless you are "one" with him. He has to want to ride with you on his back. No one makes a 1200 pound animal accept a human on his back. He is a racehorse and that is what a Thoroughbred does, he runs. Like any sport, their are injuries to both jockey & horse sometimes.
@carolannlocks 'Sport' is where the participant has a choice. I see no choice for horses in racing. they run because they are good natured and are desperate to run and stretch legs after being deliberately deprived of space. Horses have been exploited for thousands of years and it seems you want to continue to allow their suffering, horse lover?
The difference between the little girl and the jockey would be that the girl is riding her beloved pony and the jockey is exuberant because he just won his 5+% of the winnings.
race horses are started between 18 mo. and two yrs old..far too early. Their bones, ligaments, and joints are still developing. Horses taught to run & nothing else are difficult to be rehabilitated after their racing days are over. With physical damage (most ex-race horses don't pass the vet check) & their instinct to run & nothing else, they are often not found good homes. According to animal planet, 900 horses die on the tracks each year. If they survive the track, they are even slaughtered.
@katelyn0322 I agree with you 2yrs it too young to be riding but you make it sound like every horse starts its career at 2 which is untrue. Actually the majority start at 3 which is when most horses in the world get broken. They are only raced at 2 if they are very well conformed and I know this because I watch them, even so I don't agree with it, but they don't look like baby's they're huge. Not all horses go for slaughter. Most mares are put into foal, and a lot of horses get re-trained.
@franrigz But they criplle young horses for life by racing them so young. hmmm. die now or die later form racing injuries. I know JUST STOP RACING END OF!
Horse racing, in any form, is pure economical benefit. You do not race a horse which is not profitable, no matter how much you love that horse. Thats why its cruel, because you are picking out the cream of the crop. The crop being millions of horses which thousands of dolalrs have been spent on with top training conditions, yet majority of them fail to reach the standard of racing. Dont tell us that horses will get slaughtered from stopping racing. HORSES GET SLAUGHTERED BECAUSE OF RACING.
I'm not saying every single failed race horse goes to the slaughter house, but its either that or becoming a push button pony at a riding school, or standing in a paddock as a broodmare. There are brilliant people who rescue failed race horses. Notice the rescue part, because its a fact that the bleak reality of a failed race horse is the slaughter house or a sale yard, sold for around $100.. a big contrast to the $10000 they were bought for as a yearling. Its a cruel and materialistic industry.
Cruelty comes into horse racing when you think about how much training and exercising goes into it at such a young age...duh? This video is pointless.
yes, good point but i dont think horse racing is cruel its self, what i think is cruel about it is the unbelievably big jumps that most horses die on trying to jump, it wouldn't be as bad if there were less jumps ans smaller. atleast one horse dies in the english big race every year, the one weve just had 3 died. The winner from dehidration, and 2 others because they collided going over a jump and both broke their necks! does that sound cruel...... yes!
@ horsearemylife you don't have a clue what your on about seriously if racing stopped thousand of thoroughbreds would be put down because there would be no home for! Stop being ignorant and at least have some understanding of what you talking about.
i'll tell you what happens to that foal if horse racing stops.
he'll go to a happy home. slaughter is not the only alternative. a foal being murdered by humans because horse racing is banned has NOTHING to do with the debate over horse racing. get on subject, man.
that video was pathetic. dont compare that little tiny girl to a mean ass jockey with a whip. these horses snap legs off because they are untertrained and under worked. wow this video suckssss LMAO at the end u say the foal will be killed. what happens when hes slower than dirt and gets sent to a sale anyway lol dumbass
Most people who think it's cruel don't know a thing about a) horses and b) horse racing.. they see it on TV or see a fall and go OMG what a cruel sport... im going to make a blog about it. Sure some people are cruel to them which is terrible but all in all they are treated well... our horses sleep in a box at night with water, clean floor (saw dust) and a nice feed... they get up go for a jog / workout (~20 minutes)... come in have a nice wash and towel & go in the paddock for the day and eat!
lol jockeys dont use spurs haha and a whip does apsolutly nothing to a horse un less you hit them too much then you get suspended for about 2 or 3 days
Horse racing is sport like each other. What about show jumping? Here horses fall most ofen. And riders too. An dressage? Isn´t it cruel using spourse and smart bit? I think, that dressage is for horse more uncomfortable than racing.Running is natural for them.
If you want prohibit horse racing, shouldn´t we prohibit riding in cars, because hier died hunderts and thousands people every day?
@SuperDonda horse racing is not natural to the degree in which people breed Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. Muscles become over developed and their skeletal structure is still growing when they are put under massive training regimes and their systems can't often cope. Windpipe hemmoraging causes blood into the windpipes and lungs, another cruel adapatation of having a body built for 110% speed. The horses which fail to reach racing standard go to jump racing, which has 20 times more fatalities.
way to totally miss the point of the people who think it's cruel... next time you try to make a video like this consider the other side of the argument and disprove it if you can
iv got a ex race horse that came off the track august 19th 2009 and was racing for 7 years, now he has phycological issues that is going to take years to sort out i believe racing is extremely cruel and they shouldn't have to go through what they do just for peoples entertainment.
a small percent go to adoptive homes. most are sold straight off the tracks to "meat men" that take the horses straight to slaughter. they cant find enough homes for all of the horses that come off the tracks.
I love the way everyone is calling horse racing a cruel sport when orse fighting is a sport that always results in death or serious injury, slaughter is awful so why not concentrate on banning slaughter and horse fighting and bull fighting and fox hunting and other blood sports instead of horse racing!?
I don't think the running part in horse racing is cruel. I think that when it comes to the competive part it is cruel. The age should be changed though. But theres also the idiots who only think about winning and run their horse so hard that they're heart burst and they die. Yes, thats cruel. But you also have the people who make sure the horse is 100% before they run. Its half and half. And seriously, people be more mature rather than calling ilovehunterjumper a idiot, ect. Please be Respectful
@horsesLcool Yes but wouldn't that apply with other horse sports when they are over competitive? Like when dressage riders train in rollkur? Or when a horse collapses after cross country?
I DO NOT WANT THAT COLT TO BE KILLED! how DARE u say that! ur argument is so weak! horses on the track are almost always SLAUGHTERED, BEATEN, OR ABUSED! u are the ignorant one! i bought a racehorse once, her hoof walls were gone, she had hundreds of scars from being beaten by a crop, and she was depressed and had serious heart problems from being drugged! DO U THINK THAT'S NOT SLAUGHTER????
@horsesrmylife54 HA! You know nothing i work at a race yard part time. I own a ex racehore. I exercise racehorses. My horse has scars yes but everyone has a whip. The air whips they use for racing don't hurt i have tested it on myself. The horses at race yards, the ones you want to shut down. The horses are happy, they get turn out every day, they get schooled as well as galloping, the owner/trainer give the useless horses to good homes free instead of selling to bad homes or slaughter houses.
@DeathKitty123456 but how do you know i know nothing? hmm? i grew up in kentucky, right next to the kentucky derby. i saw the men beating the horses, drugging them, eight belles being raced to death later on, and i saw a beautiful colt i loved be sent to the slaughter house when he pulled up lame. and you only work at one race yard, that is only one trainer, there are thousands of trainers and jockeys out there. and watch what you say. my exracehorse had to be put down becuz of ur "king sport".
@horsesrmylife54 I don't know how it works in america but i know what happens in england and the racehorses here are treat like kings, my ex racehorse hated being hosed with cold water when i first got him because at the race yard they had used warm water. I love racing over here and evry single race yard i have visited (i have been to a lot) really care for the horses. I love horse racing (in england at least), like i said i have never seen the way they train in america
@horsesrmylife54 Yeah i might try to get some videos posted up on the race yards round where i live and some pics of my friends working to compare. I am really quite interested now after what you said about the man beating the horse because it is never right to beat a horse.
@horsesrmylife54 oh and he also payed my instructor to reschool and rehabilitate a mare that was injured so he could give her to a friend as her new dressage horse.
@horsesrmylife54 you are a fucking idiot!! Jeeeeesus I am so sick of people like you. Racehorses are high maintenance animals, the stable staff and trainers behind the vast majority of them are top class professionals!! The ones that have been drugged or abused are the ones that arent taken care of properly and you get that in ANY and EVERY equine sport. The injuries that can come from racing can come from showjumping, dressage, anywhere. Until youve lived a horse racing life you cant say shit.
@WhitleyBoulevard i say you're the idiot here. i grew up right next to the kentucky derby racetrack and stable. i would often visit the racehorses kept there, but i stopped because it made me feel sick. the horses were depressed, their bones brittle, their bodies frail. most of the horses were only yearlings, yet they were still raced all the time and very heavily. horses ARE high maintinence animals, but they're also very fragile and need attentive care. especially the yearlings. horses get
@WhitleyBoulevard highly stressed from excited enviroments like the racetrack. there is a lot of pressure put on them, both physical and mental, and this lowers, once again both physical and mental, health. this makes horses upset, sad, and more prone to diseases, accidents, and depression. a horse's bones are also not fully developed until age 4, and they are raced before that age, which is hard on their lungs, tendons, muscles, and, of course, bones. their legs snap and over 200,000 horses are
@WhitleyBoulevard are raced to death each year in Britain alone. i remember when i was 10, i saw men beating a horse a year old. they held his head and hit it strongly with a heavy rope. their excuse was, "this horse is a racehorse, and this'll make him run faster." the next year i saw a different horse being drugged by different men. in fact, every year i saw racehorses being treated like this. it gave me nightmares. if it isnt abuse, then enlighten me about what it really is.
oh and that little foal... if it were a race horse, its career would be starting in about a year, without giving it time for its bones/ plates to fully grow and set, making injury more likely. and as for the whip, it depends how you use it. jockeys use it to beat the horse so it goes faster, some whips are used as a tool to cue a horse or point and target train,
do some research before you make a stupid video like this. way to condone horse abuse, you horse hater...

wow, hey ilovehunterjumper, you are an idiot!!! they slaughter most of the race horses anyway!! racing is not like the career that saves their life!! 100% of horses that enter the race business will leave the race business, what do you think happens to them after that?
Some people need to get over themselves. A race is a race. All the horses are doing is running from A to B. yes, mankind have to complicate things and then make it cruel. Yes in the industry some horses go to slaughter, but what will happen if its banned? Can you honestly sit at your computer and say envitable slaughter is better than a chance at life? I think not. Most of you have no solid evidence behind it your are just crying because its "mean to the poor horsey!"
Horse racing isn't cruel. Individuals in horse racing might be, because they try to take the fast route and don't properly breed, train and prepare the horses. You can't force and animal that large to do anything, and a crop while riding really cannot be that damaging.
My horse was raced at 2, now at 10 he has severe arthritis, that can't be treated because the joint is so horribley worn down., he's getting put down tomorrow. Thats how horse racing is fucking cruel.
@XxXjazzwazzerXxX I can't even beleive how much I miss him. I went up to the yard last night after work not even thinking. It was horrible when I remembered.
I hope you and you're horse have many more years together, I'm sure he will be okay as you've caught it so quickly! The thing with Tigger was he had a funny trot, it was kind of dished, but that was because of bar firing gone wrong (vet said he was sound), so I didn't even notice it until he started transfering weight, and laying down x
@RawrManRawrrr My horse is a ex racer and has artheritis he is only 12 but that isn't always because of the racing, anyone person or horse no matter what age can get artheritis. My friends horse is 3, never been ridden, never been raced, only been turned out and he has servere artheritis, my friend is 20 and has servere artheritis. Yes backing and racing at 2 years old contributes and i think the age should be 4 but it isn't the only reason. Sorry about your horse though
i have to say that racing is cruel.i have an ex rcae horse who i love but for a long time before i got him after he raced he was still hurt he was spurred and had his mouth yanked at and now he can no longer wear a bit.he was kicked out for being to slow whitch isnt fear he is really fast.the picture at 0.38 is curl the pony will get a head ake from the for lock being under the bridle and the bit is really strong for such a young rider to use.
@notyrgirl101 oh please just stop. horse racing ISNT cruel. horses are big animals they have ways of getting their point across if they dont want to do something. and thats one jockey that shouldnt have been racing. im going to be a jockey and im going to race with caution and love. you cant blame the whole sport for the stupity of one or two jockeys/trainers.
Yes, actually horses are forced to race. If they choose not to, they are killed. And racehorses are expected to run 2 miles in under three minutes, thats like you running 1 mile in 4 minutes. if they dont go fast the horse is whipped.
@bluedevilsgal ?? foreal? the majority of them get sold to familys or are retrained to barrel race, teach diabled people to ride, or for jumping. yes i do know that some get slaughtered. and thats wrong but dont blame the desicion of an owner on the whole sport.
You have got to be kidding me, forced? A horse being like 10x the weight of its jockey? I think not. Your're view of horse racing is distorted. Also, if you wouldn't mind and not be so rude to people while trying to get your point across. You maybe believe one thing but just because someone else disagrees does not mean you have the right to resort to petty name calling.
@addictedtohorzez you need to man your own stuff sick of you and fyi i dont eed lessons ccause i do havve lessons ever sine my horse died of your madnic tick
i am a jockey k and i now my horse was beated by his owner that is why i rode him to tell him it was ok i know that horse is dead now just because how much marks and blood was on him i never whiped him in the races i won just one race i won and i made sure he was ok before i sayed goodbye
and the reason we race them as 2yr olds is because they are at there quickest then, we've had many youngsters, and not one has broken down, if you actually rode a racehorse you would see some can be very strong as youngsters.
this video is great and your right its not cruel they run cause they want to, i work on a racing yard, and its not nasty, cruel or abbusive.
and actually AnywhereButHere09 racing the younghorse or the track dosent make them breakdown, its better than sending a old nackered horse down. the reason racehorses break down, is because they never have and never will be strong enough to compete, we've had two of our horses break down and they were 5 and 8, so no its not just young horses.
Racing a young horse before it is mature, is very cruel, that is what horseracing in the U.S. does unfortunately: that's where & why you have most of the breakdowns.
As for the foal, he/she would probably be someone's riding horse. Lots of people like the breed for many other reasons. Good start, but rather naiive video message.
all this video shows is peoples happiness, and the pathetic music, proves nothing. They dont have a choice there made to do it, they dont enjoy it, what animal would like to be kept in an enclosed space, or a bordered field. And when it does get banned, they dont need to kill the horses. 300 horses are raced to death every year.
@kyro601; yeah, if my horse was hurt I would die inside too, but I have 3 ex-racers and they are in perfect condition. 1 is 27 who loves to run. the others are 24 and 10 and in perfect condition, Perhaps your horse weren't most healthy at purchase, the person who made this video is right, horse racing is not cruel !
@pleygo2110 usally people who are selling horses that have health problems and horses that are more or less insane get druged until the people want the horse and the drugs wear of and the now have health problems and of are insane
ok few things i want to point out .. my tb he has stomach ulsars .. guess wat caused that ... he has his fucking liver failing .. the vet said its from his racing days .. he has been off the track 4 years ... my other tb he has a messed up leg from racing i only got him becouse it was either me or the knackery ... funny that .. its hard seeing my boys every day suffering out in the paddock ... and what is worse darky only has 4 months left .. thanks racing i applaud u *claps*
alsot here are situations where a jock has clearly abused the whip . In cases of abuse. The jock may lose racing dates which has a large financial impact. Also Not To mention most of these horses want to run, its in there blood, its what there bred for, just like how horses love to jump ect.
And search up the new whips some places use now, there much better and they really dont hurt the horse, if used in the proper way, i cant really explain what the whip is like now, but im sure if you research a bit you will find out.
but some horses will hesitate when a whip is used and the jock may stop using it or wave the whip instead. Sometimes when the jock is waving the stick around at his sides it looks as if he is the horse is being hit repeatedly, but in some (maybe most) cases, the jock is really only waving it around so the horse can see it, and will take it as a clue to run faster. In different places there are rules about using the whip (how often it can be used and ect.)
And they are NOT treated better than any other horse. Tell me which one of these lives would you prefer, the first that of a race horse.
You are locked in a stall up to 22 hours a day and when you do get out you are either hot walked or trained on the track. You are fed high energy grains that can often cause painful stomache ulcers, You are carted from race track to race track.
You are constantly whipped when you are running as fast as
@no1horselover May I Ask you A Question If You Dont Mind? How Do you Know There Locked Up For 22 Hours A DAy?? Please Do Reply. And As For The Whips Any Rider knows that its very important to use your legs when guiding the horse. But in the jocks case, he/she doesnt ride in the saddle, they are crouched over it, making it harder to use the leg aids. The Whip Is designed to make a slapping noise, In most cases a horse will respond to a whip by running faster, ( Read Next part)
well if UK racing is worse than that in the US then all I can say is that horses in the US must be treated 100 x better than your average riding horse. And that's nothing but a good thing!! As for other comments....it doesn't hurt a horse to run and neither does a racing whip (you wouldn't believe the testing they did on the cushiond regulation whip in the UK). Racing authorities work closely with the RSPCA to make sure racing is always being made safer, and it is. Racing isn't cruel.
@wannawinthenational fast as you can and after all the hard work and money youve made them you are then disposed of and sent to slaughter.
Or you can live with someone like me.
Who gives you lots of attention, you have a stable/shelter thats door is always open so you can come and go as you please. You dont have metal plates on your feet which restricts your hooves growing the way they should. You dont have a tight saddle or a metal rod shoved in your mouth,
@no1horselover MY own horses are treated much like yours, including two who are ex racers. I have worked in racing since i was 13 and have NEVER come across a horse sold for sluaghter (again, thisis UK, not worldwide so maye it is bad in other places, in which case it has to be changed.) Where I work, the horses are treated like pets, or best friends and want for nothing. They are loved and cared for as well as is possible when you are dealing with horses that are by nature fragile.
@wannawinthenational meaning that it would be a risk to turn allow them a constant free rein as your horses get. But the assumption that they only work on the track is wrong, at least in GB and Ire. They go out hacking and on varied terrain, and one of our best horses is kept sweet by beng taken to play round banks and rivers. Like I have said before, whip rules are strictly goverened and it is mostly used to keep a horse straight (thus preventing injury to themselves and other horses).
@wannawinthenational the shoes worn by racehorses are very light, and some do go barefoot anyway. As for bits and saddles. All riding uses that, and it is no worse in racing than anywhere else. If a saddle doesn't fit, a different one is found. Everything I have ever experienced means I know that horses are treated as well as possibe and treated with compassion and extreme love!! From what I know, UK racing is fine, but I am all for supporting changes if it isn't elsewhere in the world.
@wannawinthenational im not gunna sit here and write an essay on how horse racing IS NOT cruel. But I Honestly agree with everything you are saying. The Only Thing is i dont agree with is them starting the horses at such a young age, but other then that i really dont see how its cruel, and i yes i have done plenty of research about the racing industry. And I suggest that everyone else do the same thing. Search up the new laws they have about the whips, ECT. Then you can see how its not cruel.
Horses should not even be SAT on at their age. It causes painful inuries to their barely-developed bones. When horses run, they take short sprints. These horses are forced to run against their own will, When school horses walk, trot, and canter. Easy. And they are brought along MUCH slower, not beaten to gallop their first competition. The reason the horses take off out of the ates if because it's very scary for them, and they are anxiously anticipating the pain that is coming.
Wow! All you people saying it's cruel spurting out "facts" left right and centre are just showing how little you know or understand about racing!! Now I can only speak for UK racing, but here the horses are treated like kings, every luxury imaginable is available to them. Anyone who knows anything about horses would know they LOVE to run, and if they don't well then they are either kept as hacks or sold for eventing, hunting, dressage etc.
You can't force a 600kg animal to run if it doesn't want to. And as for steeplechasing, you would never get it within 100yds of those fences if it didn't want to go. The horses take their jockeys willingly forward into them. Whip rules are regulated with an iron fist, and you can look these up if you don't believe me. Trainers, jockeys, owners and in particular the lads that look after them LOVE these horses and when they are tragically killed I can tell you that a lot of tears are shed.
@wannawinthenational In the uk it's worse!!! even one of your stupid princes beat his horse after he pissed off his horse and the horse bucked him off!! and horses like for short distances and by their own will
@no1horselover Like I said, I can only speak for UK racing, but in the whole country i doubt there are even 30,000 racehorses, and very very few are slaughtered (in fact there are very few slaughterhouses and most of their clients are people with elderly horses/ ponies who aren't expected to survive the next winter). I KNOW that these horses are treated better than any others and you only have to walk into a racing yard to see the tremendous standard of care and love for these lovely animals.
They are fourced and basicly there other choice is goin to slaughter! These animals are beuatiful and they shouldent have to do this! and that foal could easly get trained for show jumping, dressage and/or XC! he would be trained wen hes the right age! as race horses are trained to young a think and a hate it because most of them die before the age of 4 yrs old and could have lived for years! how could u say that horse racing isnt cruel!!
its cruel, because they race them before they have even developed. They dont choose to run, they are forced. Horses love to run, but without restrictions. They would rather sit in a paddock/field and eat a bale of hay
@XxXjazzwazzerXxX Yes, I would much rather be sitting in bed rather than be writing an essay in school, but you know what? Its not cruelty to children. I'm sure most horses ta your local riding school would much rather be standing in their stalls munching away at their hay, but they have a job. You can't just have these horses for nothing - they have to pay for themselves! Seriously, there are a lot worse fates for horses than to run.
@xXfillyfoalXx yes but that is mental not physical. I got to admit I like seeing a horse race. My horse is an ex racer and LOVES his runs, but he has the beginings of artheritis and gets sore. He dosnt even run over 100m. The reason some horses end up in worser fates is because they couldnt live up to expectations, not saying it happens to every horse.
yes the freaking do abuse them!! i got an ex racehorse that the owners were gonna kill because he was too slow and they were pissed! they used cattle prods and whipped him in the eye repeativly and he now has a juvenille cataract in that eye so screw u for saying its not cruel! horse racing = a 6 year old child that couldve been an olympic athelete; caged up and forced to run; not to mention beat!
you have no idea about what you are talking about, stupid fuck. LOOK AT THE EXPRESSIONS OF THE HORSES. theyre more or less in panic. they run because theyre afraid not too. what it is that you cant see? 370 horses die each year only in the uk,during racing competitions or however you say it in english. do you think 370 more horses die every year in the uk while running free? dont think so. are you 13 years old or what? and you saw a horse for the first time last week, huh?
I heard that jockeys whip their horses an average of 30 times per race. Some horses are pushed to their breaking point with breathing problems, stomach and intestinal issues, broken legs, broken necks, and slaughter. Are only part of the dark side to racing.
yea cause breaking in a horse at 12 months is nornmal you fucking idoit lets throw you on the race course and beat you with a whip and see how you like maybe if you to slow well send ya to the slaughter house for pet food or make ya jump hurdles and break ya hip, legs, and ya neck and say ya took the jump wrong
Yeah that girl has a whip, but does she use it as often as a jockey in a race?
I don't see how racing is natural, when a horse or zebra runs from a predator, does it slow gallop for 1400m then sprint flat tack to a finish line? No, it sprints for its life just long enough to outrun most predators. Banning racing wont send that foal to slaughter, it'll prob be sold as an eventer or pony club horse.. Racing heats horses up, some become so mental there's no other option but to put them down.

The horses aren't harmed in horses racing from whips- you would know because the horses would have marks and scars from where they've been smacked.
But I DO think the grand national is wrong because horses break their legs.

Yes and that is true.
rileyjsg 1 month ago

QtipAppaloosa 2 months ago
but the horses only run because they don't want to be left behind, because in the wild they run in a pac normally they are running from something that is scary to them, like when that bell goes off they want to get away from it. so they are kinda forced to run? i heard this from a horse tv show.

the idea of horses racing isn't cruel and yes accidents do happen in all equine sports
but the problem is it's an INDUSTRY and an industry doesn't opperate to have happy, healthy horses it opperates to make money
unfortunately, this industry found cruelty (inadvertant or not) to be most profitable

I have been in horse racing all of my life. Let me tell you all ... You can't beat a horse into being a race horse if it doesn't want to be one. Everything I do every single day is for the benefit of the horses in my care. From what I've seen Race horses are the most well cared for horses on earth. (with some exclusions, there are some bad trainers) I've been around show horses and horses kept as pets.I own an OTTB who didn't want to be a racehorse. so he isn't one. hes 4yrs, sound & happy
lisssaa19 5 months ago
I don't agree with horse racing because:
they are started at too young of an age
MOST of the time, they will be slaughtered if they're not making money
The whip is over used, yes hunter/jumpers use whips BUT their main way of getting the horse moving is with leg, not whip. The whip is supposed to be a final resort, not a primary aid.

I think like any sport that involves horses, it depends more on the owners and the trainers. There are some very good race horse owners and trainers who truly love their horses and have passion for what they do. And then you have the people that are only in it for the money and will do whatever it takes to win. You see it all the time at horse shows. The bad people always ruin it for the good people. The majority of race horses are treated like royalty.
squecky918 7 months ago
(cont'd)... do not help in a horse race when used at the end at all. Just my two cents.
jfcx333 7 months ago
Did you ever notice that in the pictures with the horses freely galloping in their paddocks, they have their ears perked and look happy, and when their racing, their ears are pinned and they look miserable? There is a lot more difference between the first two pictures then the added tack and rider. What about when they run the horses at top speed in terrible footing? And yes, other disciplines use whips, but not that much, and not that harshly. They just did a study that proved whips... (cont'd)
jfcx333 7 months ago
horses are NOT forced to race. If they don't want to run, they are withdrawn from the race (scratched) and all bets on the scratched horse are returned.

the whip. if we used it to hurt them, we'd hurt ourselves. horses run from harm and usually by insinct, its not going to run like you want them to. its more like tapping a person to get there attention. if you ever tried punching a horse (not on its face though) all its going to do is look at you like your retarted or just stand there.
addycatstar 7 months ago
Running on flat ground with shoes on is a hell of a lot better than running on crap and messing up your feet. Horses love to run anyway, whether it's on the track or in the wild. One horse could EASILY kill the whole crew of assistant starters if they seriously did not want to go in. If you truly invade their space, they won't hesitate to kill
ruffianrulz 7 months ago

@jus91al Maybe one or two, true, but we're talking HUNDREDS on the race track. 'horse racing isn't cruel' - utter garbage.
THINK then write.
xhestjentex 8 months ago
@xhestjentex ur saying hundreds of horses are killed everyday on the race track? Where's the evidence of that? Ur mental. Around the world hundreds of horses break their legs EVERY DAY and are put down or brought back to health through non-racing occurances - just because YOU don't hear about it, doesn't mean it's not happening. (You're not that important). THINK then write. And stop thinking you're opinions are so valid - they're not! Who are you?? NOBODY.
jus91al 8 months ago

No I don't because you are nobody, and you don't even understand what I am saying on here because you are thick, HA.
jus91al 8 months ago
The difference is; a regular rider isn't going to beat the crap out of their horse or run it so hard it's leg snaps. Horse racing isn't natural nor are a lot other horse sports. I'm very familiar with horses having been around them nearly my entire life. I've seen plenty of races, watched a thoroughbred grow up and start his training but no matter which way I try to look at it, I can't deny the fact that there is cruelty involved here.

@doggieyo Thank god for an honest person.
xhestjentex 8 months ago
Horseracing is like all horse sports, it is dangerous and the horse & rider are a TEAM. Don't comment unless you have actually taken the reins of a thoroughbred off the track. THAT HORSE will never run for you unless you are "one" with him. He has to want to ride with you on his back. No one makes a 1200 pound animal accept a human on his back. He is a racehorse and that is what a Thoroughbred does, he runs. Like any sport, their are injuries to both jockey & horse sometimes.
carolannlocks 8 months ago
@carolannlocks 'Sport' is where the participant has a choice. I see no choice for horses in racing. they run because they are good natured and are desperate to run and stretch legs after being deliberately deprived of space. Horses have been exploited for thousands of years and it seems you want to continue to allow their suffering, horse lover?

race horses are started between 18 mo. and two yrs old..far too early. If they survive the track, they are even slaughtered.
katelyn0322 8 months ago
@katelyn0322 I agree with you 2yrs it too young to be riding but you make it sound like every horse starts its career at 2 which is untrue. Actually the majority start at 3 which is when most horses in the world get broken. They are only raced at 2 if they are very well conformed and I know this because I watch them, even so I don't agree with it, but they don't look like baby's they're huge. Not all horses go for slaughter. Most mares are put into foal, and a lot of horses get re-trained.
jus91al 8 months ago
@jus91al
They only do it so young because if they do it when they get older, they can break bones more easily, thats a fact!
franrigz 8 months ago
@franrigz But they criplle young horses for life by racing them so young. hmmm. die now or die later form racing injuries. I know JUST STOP RACING END OF!
xhestjentex 8 months ago
Horse racing, in any form, is pure economical benefit. You do not race a horse which is not profitable, no matter how much you love that horse. Thats why its cruel, because you are picking out the cream of the crop. The crop being millions of horses which thousands of dolalrs have been spent on with top training conditions, yet majority of them fail to reach the standard of racing. Dont tell us that horses will get slaughtered from stopping racing. HORSES GET SLAUGHTERED BECAUSE OF RACING.
sophiee72 9 months ago
I'm not saying every single failed race horse goes to the slaughter house, but its either that or becoming a push button pony at a riding school, or standing in a paddock as a broodmare. There are brilliant people who rescue failed race horses. Notice the rescue part, because its a fact that the bleak reality of a failed race horse is the slaughter house or a sale yard, sold for around $100.. a big contrast to the $10000 they were bought for as a yearling. Its a cruel and materialistic industry.
sophiee72 9 months ago
Cruelty comes into horse racing when you think about how much training and exercising goes into it at such a young age...duh? This video is pointless.
SarahVstheClown 9 months ago
yes, good point but i dont think horse racing is cruel its self, what i think is cruel about it is the unbelievably big jumps that most horses die on trying to jump, it wouldn't be as bad if there were less jumps ans smaller. atleast one horse dies in the english big race every year, the one weve just had 3 died. The winner from dehidration, and 2 others because they collided going over a jump and both broke their necks! does that sound cruel...... yes!

SuperDonda 11 months ago 5
@SuperDonda horse racing is not natural to the degree in which people breed Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. Muscles become over developed and their skeletal structure is still growing when they are put under massive training regimes and their systems can't often cope. Windpipe hemmoraging causes blood into the windpipes and lungs, another cruel adapatation of having a body built for 110% speed. The horses which fail to reach racing standard go to jump racing, which has 20 times more fatalities.
sophiee72 9 months ago

I love the way everyone is calling horse racing a cruel sport when orse fighting is a sport that always results in death or serious injury, slaughter is awful so why not concentrate on banning slaughter and horse fighting and bull fighting and fox hunting and other blood sports instead of horse racing!?
DeathKitty123456 1 year ago
I don't think the running part in horse racing is cruel. I think that when it comes to the competive part it is cruel. The age should be changed though. But theres also the idiots who only think about winning and run their horse so hard that they're heart burst and they die. Yes, thats cruel. But you also have the people who make sure the horse is 100% before they run. Its half and half. And seriously, people be more mature rather than calling ilovehunterjumper a idiot, ect.

DO U THINK THAT'S NOT SLAUGHTER????
horsesrmylife54 1 year ago
@horsesrmylife54 HA! You know nothing i work at a race yard part time. I own a ex racehore. I exercise racehorses. My horse has scars yes but everyone has a whip. The air whips they use for racing don't hurt i have tested it on myself. The horses at race yards, the ones you want to shut down. The horses are happy, they get turn out every day, they get schooled as well as galloping, the owner/trainer give the useless horses to good homes free instead of selling to bad homes or slaughter houses.
DeathKitty123456 1 year ago
@DeathKitty123456 but how do you know i know nothing? hmm? i grew up in kentucky, right next to the kentucky derby. i saw the men beating the horses, drugging them, eight belles being raced to death later on, and i saw a beautiful colt i loved be sent to the slaughter house when he pulled up lame. and you only work at one race yard, that is only one trainer, there are thousands of trainers and jockeys out there. and watch what you say. my exracehorse had to be put down becuz of ur "king sport".

Most of you have no solid evidence behind it your are just crying because its "mean to the poor horsey!"
xXfillyfoalXx 1 year ago
Horse racing isn't cruel. Individuals in horse racing might be, because they try to take the fast route and don't properly breed, train and prepare the horses. You can't force and animal that large to do anything, and a crop while riding really cannot be that damaging.

RawrManRawrrr 1 year ago
@RawrManRawrrr My horse is a ex racer and has artheritis he is only 12 but that isn't always because of the racing, anyone person or horse no matter what age can get artheritis. My friends horse is 3, never been ridden, never been raced, only been turned out and he has servere artheritis, my friend is 20 and has servere artheritis. Yes backing and racing at 2 years old contributes and i think the age should be 4 but it isn't the only reason. Sorry about your horse though
DeathKitty123456 1 year ago
i have to say that racing is cruel.i have an ex rcae horse who i love but for a long time before i got him after he raced he was still hurt he was spurred and had his mouth yanked at and now he can no longer wear a bit.he was kicked out for being to slow whitch isnt fear he is really fast.the picture at 0.38 is curl the pony will get a head ake from the for lock being under the bridle and the bit is really strong for such a young rider to use.

JockeyGirlLuvsHorses 1 year ago
Yes, actually horses are forced to race. If they choose not to, they are killed. And racehorses are expected to run 2 miles in under three minutes, thats like you running 1 mile in 4 minutes. if they dont go fast the horse is whipped.

and the reason we race them as 2yr olds is because they are at there quickest then, we've had many youngsters, and not one has broken down, if you actually rode a racehorse you would see some can be very strong as youngsters.

this video is great and your right its not cruel they run cause they want to, i work on a racing yard, and its not nasty, cruel or abbusive.
and actually AnywhereButHere09 racing the younghorse or the track dosent make them breakdown, its better than sending a old nackered horse down. the reason racehorses break down, is because they never have and never will be strong enough to compete, we've had two of our horses break down and they were 5 and 8, so no its not just young horses.
jesswalley1 1 year ago

300 horses are raced to death every year.

alsot here are situations where a jock has clearly abused the whip . In cases of abuse. The jock may lose racing dates which has a large financial impact. Also Not To mention most of these horses want to run, its in there blood, its what there bred for, just like how horses love to jump ect.
PrometheusFlyingSolo 1 year ago
And search up the new whips some places use now, there much better and they really dont hurt the horse, if used in the proper way, i cant really explain what the whip is like now, but im sure if you research a bit you will find out.
PrometheusFlyingSolo 1 year ago
but some horses will hesitate when a whip is used and the jock may stop using it or wave the whip instead.
PrometheusFlyingSolo 1 year ago
That over 30,000 Im talking about is world wide.

PrometheusFlyingSolo 1 year ago
well if UK racing is worse than that in the US then all I can say is that horses in the US must be treated 100 x better than your average riding horse. Racing isn't cruel.

no1horselover 1 year ago
@no1horselover MY own horses are treated much like yours, including two who are ex racers. I have worked in racing since i was 13 and have NEVER come across a horse sold for sluaghter (again, thisis UK, not worldwide so maye it is bad in other places, in which case it has to be changed.) Where I work, the horses are treated like pets, or best friends and want for nothing. They are loved and cared for as well as is possible when you are dealing with horses that are by nature fragile.
wannawinthenational 1 year ago
@wannawinthenational meaning that it would be a risk to turn allow them a constant free rein as your horses get. But the assumption that they only work on the track is wrong, at least in GB and Ire. They go out hacking and on varied terrain, and one of our best horses is kept sweet by beng taken to play round banks and rivers. Like I have said before, whip rules are strictly goverened and it is mostly used to keep a horse straight (thus preventing injury to themselves and other horses).
wannawinthenational 1 year ago
@wannawinthenational the shoes worn by racehorses are very light, and some do go barefoot anyway. As for bits and saddles. All riding uses that, and it is no worse in racing than anywhere else. If a saddle doesn't fit, a different one is found. Everything I have ever experienced means I know that horses are treated as well as possibe and treated with compassion and extreme love!! From what I know, UK racing is fine, but I am all for supporting changes if it isn't elsewhere in the world.
wannawinthenational 1 year ago

HorseLuver4Ever733 1 year ago
Wow! All you people saying it's cruel spurting out "facts" left right and centre are just showing how little you know or understand about racing!! Now I can only speak for UK racing, but here the horses are treated like kings, every luxury imaginable is available to them. Anyone who knows anything about horses would know they LOVE to run, and if they don't well then they are either kept as hacks or sold for eventing, hunting, dressage etc.
wannawinthenational 1 year ago 2
You can't force a 600kg animal to run if it doesn't want to. And as for steeplechasing, you would never get it within 100yds of those fences if it didn't want to go. The horses take their jockeys willingly forward into them. Whip rules are regulated with an iron fist, and you can look these up if you don't believe me. Trainers, jockeys, owners and in particular the lads that look after them LOVE these horses and when they are tragically killed I can tell you that a lot of tears are shed.
wannawinthenational 1 year ago
@wannawinthenational In the uk it's worse!!! even one of your stupid princes beat his horse after he pissed off his horse and the horse bucked him off!! and horses like for short distances and by their own will

no1horselover 1 year ago
@no1horselover Like I said, I can only speak for UK racing, but in the whole country i doubt there are even 30,000 racehorses, and very very few are slaughtered (in fact there are very few slaughterhouses and most of their clients are people with elderly horses/ ponies who aren't expected to survive the next winter). I KNOW that these horses are treated better than any others and you only have to walk into a racing yard to see the tremendous standard of care and love for these lovely animals.
wannawinthenational 1 year ago
They are fourced and basicly there other choice is goin to slaughter! These animals are beuatiful and they shouldent have to do this! and that foal could easly get trained for show jumping, dressage and/or XC! he would be trained wen hes the right age! as race horses are trained to young a think and a hate it because most of them die before the age of 4 yrs old and could have lived for years! how could u say that horse racing isnt cruel!!

XxXjazzwazzerXxX 1 year ago 2
@XxXjazzwazzerXxX Yes, I would much rather be sitting in bed rather than be writing an essay in school, but you know what? Its not cruelty to children. I'm sure most horses ta your local riding school would much rather be standing in their stalls munching away at their hay, but they have a job. You can't just have these horses for nothing - they have to pay for themselves! Seriously, there are a lot worse fates for horses than to run.
xXfillyfoalXx 1 year ago

Yeah that girl has a whip, but does she use it as often as a jockey in a race?
I don't see how racing is natural, when a horse or zebra runs from a predator, does it slow gallop for 1400m then sprint flat tack to a finish line? No, it sprints for its life just long enough to outrun most predators. Banning racing wont send that foal to slaughter, it'll prob be sold as an eventer or pony club horse.. Racing heats horses up, some become so mental there's no other option but to put them down.
