By the way, I love Carl Sagan for what he was, A great astronomer and speaker. I read his books and love this series but hate when people like Sorrento1969 bring religion into it.
@deeppurple28 Dude, he had cancer... and with out that thing if you are going thru chemo or radiation it is probable you are having an even worse time. Marijuana helps gain appetite back... and it's awesome! hehe
It should be legal for anyone over a age limit, buying it should pay taxes... or the other way around taking away tobacco and alcohol because these are the same thing, or worse.
Never tried it, not against it... I would test it at least once if it gets legality
@Sorrento1969 What I truly find hilarious is when these gimps that are posting on youtube get their panties in a bunch! They get their panties in a bunch when they learn that Carl Sagan smoked pot. They just can't believe it then they start insulting people! I get a good laugh out of it!
@deeppurple28 LOL, not as much as the christian fanatics who hate Sagan's bones even after more than a decade of his death.
I really don't know, nor care, when did Sagan used pot... It doesn't mean much. But I do believe he was in favor of releasing the stupid prohibition behind it.
I haven't used a single type of illegal drug in my life, yet I don't see what's the big deal against them... specially pot. It must be a religious thing
Why do we have to respect religion and the people who practice it, what ever it might be? They do not respect anyone, not even themselves... and they are wrong. Carl Sagan did more for humanity than the greatest Pope or religious figure in history: kids who saw this tv show wanted to learn, that was a real miracle
@Sorrento1969 Yes. Hospitals, The Red cross, feeding the hungry and helping those who nobody wanted to help let alone speak to. Religion has no respect for anyone. Do you even listen to the ignorant crap that you spew? I never saw Carl Sagan, who was very wealthy, feeding the hungry or clothing and housing the poor. You can respond with a nasty comment but you can not refute what I said.
@Tralman1965 Why insult me? If you don't agree with what I say then good for you, but it is not personal.
Now however you insulted me saying I "spew ignorant crap" which requires a response: 100% of people who believe in reliegion are fanatics, idiots, stupid, ignorants... that's the truth, and you belong there. How does it feel to see the "magic" of electricity, or don't knowing where the elements come from? "like magic" probably... dumb!
@Tralman1965 As for the intelectual response you gave me, the one about "all the things religion has done for humanity", you mentioned hospitals and feeding the hungry and helping poor... you forgot to say catholic nuns are the only ones heliping aids patients in africa, if you have aids anywhere in the world it is probable a catholic nun is taking care of you.
However how much hurting has it done, more than a millenium of destroying humanity. Gee thanks. Please study history first
@Tralman1965 Carl Sagan was as wealthy as any Issac Assimov, maybe less. You see he gained money writting books, and later being paid a 1970's TV salary... I don't have the exact numbers but it's probable he wasn't "rich" as you think he was.
On the other hand he was taken out of the science society just for the sin of being famous.
More children studied science and engineering because of him than never before, and you as a gringo must know this is an estrategic thin for your county
I don't really think the popular belief of a meterorite taking out the dinosaurs can be true, because we still have reptiles today, and besides, something that catastrophic just might have ended all life on earth. More realistically, I think too many dinosaurs over specialized and couldn't keep up with a changing environement. Not to mention some were so big they probably required too much food.
Carl Sagan was a beautiful mind, before his time in the field of science. I would have liked to have met him, but I suppose I still can. He has left behind his writings, his videos, and his philosophy. He will essentially, live forever. I believe that he is right when he says that "we are star stuff".
Carl Sagan proves that people who are interested in science and smokes weed has a broader and clearer veiw of what reality really is, if all people were like this we could function as one, instead of as fighting eachother for our "countries" wich is only land on this planet for us all to explore. Forget relgions, space is WAY more facinating. Who could have guessed 1000 years ago that we are on a blue planet in a solar system within the milkiway galaxy in seemingly infinite universe
What a load of shit. We all now that some big bearded fella that used to live on a cloud, but now lives above space, made us in his own image, except women which were sprouted from a man's rib in a garden the same week the earth was made, which was only about two and half thousands years ago. I believe fairies may live at the bottom of my garden too.

CARL SAGAN - "Almost no one attempts to educate themselves on the basics of science and technology, yet our society is based on these. TV takes up far too much of our time and is apparently much more attractive to most of us than the beauty and wonder of science. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces." - CARL SAGAN
I can relate the facts of science to the bible, in my opinion ``star stuff´´ may be gods words for sand that he used to mold humanity, and in gods world time is hes choice, not ours, so 7 days (witch was the time it took him to create the world) could be 7 billion years. These examples are just the few of my own theory's of matter, time, space etc.. - Markus Räisänen 12
@TeamColorKing .....or the bible could be all bullshit and Sagan is spot on. By the way, a theory is usually supported by some kind of evidence, or at least some sort of sound reasoning. The bible doesn't count.
@RadaghastBrown and sagan would think you are "stupid" for believing so strongly that god does not exist, since you have no evidence either. he said himself "By some definitions atheism is very stupid"
@Quantumstates They may be tears of sadness. I think there's a beautiful humanity to the feeling of sadness over the loss of great humans. I just finished Demon Haunted World, and the note of his death on December 20th 2004 - wasn't it? - at the end of the book almost made me cry, if not for the fact that my bus stopped shortly after finishing the book.

@ImpudentInfidel Tyson is really good - but he doesn't have the grasp and insight like Sagan. Sagan talks about planet earth as a whole and Tyson talks about America blah blah...
I wish I could find superlatives worthy of Carl Sagen & his stunning masterpiece "The Cosmos" Over a quarter century later and it's as astonishingly relevant & beautiful as ever.
I grew up in a catholic household, but when I saw this on TV when I was about 10 years old, the entire concept of god and conservative dogma became obsolete.
Thank you, Mr. Sagan. May your legacy in humanity live on forever. :)
I Miss you too Mr Sagan..I love your work..it's all so amazing I am loving learning about things I would nevre had even known about..love and gratitude to you..and thank you for posting this..I am definitely going to buy the DVD's..Can't wait!
Another great pioneer of science and voice of reason which spoke out in a time when his society was plunged in fear, ignorance, hatred, hypocrisy, greed, stupidity, nuclear arrogance and naivity. Carl Sagan opened a window of opportunity for us to better ourselves.
I salute this great man and his sublime, beautiful way of explaining science.
my old aunt was laughing at me when i told her that we came from the stars, "starstuff" i said, ignorance it seems does survive the years and generations, consider yourself lucky, that you understand this, that you have critical thinking mind and don't believe that a god made you out of mud
@JNieckarz We can trace the elements of our body to the stellar furnaces from which they came, and then back to the Big Bang. We now understand this process, more or less, in detail and over the course of billions of years. At no point does this hypothesis require a God, nor does it seem prudent to introduce one for any reason except as a synonym for "science has not yet figured this part out". That's about all God has done for the world for thousands of years- serving us as a placeholder.
@JNieckarz "This does not absolutely exclude God." True. But so what? The fact that it's *possible* for a god to exist does not at all justify belief that one actually does exist. In order to be justified in believing anything, you must present compelling, affirmative, logical evidence in favor of that belief. Religious beliefs are no exception to this standard. I'm assuming you believe God exists, so I'd be very interested in hearing if you can demonstrate he actually does exist.
@nichtmuttersprachler Tell me where the elements of life first came from? I'm not sure either of us know can prove our points. Which is why you can't absolutely disclude the other.
@JNieckarz "Tell me where the elements of life first came from?" The current theory of abiogenesis proposes that the first nucleotides and amino acids came from carbonaceous chondrites, deep-sea vents, and Earth’s primitive atmosphere. These building blocks of life then polymerized to form RNA and amino acids, which became enclosed in membranes. Finally, these membrane-enclosed biological polymers acquired cellular properties, which marked the beginning of primitive life on Earth.
@JNieckarz Since that question goes beyond the scope of my biology education, I myself am not sure. I'm not sure if you're genuinely curious about the answer to that question, but if you are, you should try reading some relevant scientific literature such as textbooks or peer-reviewed journals.
To thousands of generations, it doesn't exclude their gods, the gods before theirs and so on. Just because you believe in one God right now, doesn't mean others will have other gods after you, many have right now in this day and age. It's simple-minded and dangerous to state that your imagination is the one that is right, even through the passage of tens of thousands of years of human history and hopefully tens of thousands more.
@Andreazor No where did I say "my imagination is right", or the right one. My first reply was in regards to this statement - "my old aunt was laughing at me when i told her that we came from the stars, "starstuff" i said, ignorance it seems does survive the years and generations, consider yourself lucky, that you understand this, that you have critical thinking mind and don't believe that a god made you out of mud"
That statement claims "their" imagination is the correct one.
@JNieckarz "...does not exclude God." So what? Do you really think the fact that it's *possible* for a god to exist is at all compelling? To quote Carl Sagan, "Your inability to invalidate my hypothesis is not at all the same thing as proving it true." If you want to demonstrate a deity exists, you must provide extraordinary evidence for that extraordinary claim. Stating that others haven't disproved your claim does not at all show that your claim has any validity.
question to abrahamic retards-whr do u fit ur adam and eve bullshit in evolution?the answer is nowhr coz no such people ever existed means ur books r stupid fairytales and u people r deluding urself, they r just mythological patriarchs of d human race invented by bronze age people
IF THERE IS A CREATOR THEN I THINK IT MEANT US TO REALISE THERE IS NO WHY ONLY HOW. OUR PURPOSE IS TO REALISE THERE IS NO WHY AND THAT WE ARE ONLY A GRAIN OF SAND IN THE UNKNOWN VASTNESS OF EXISTENCE BUT THATS OK BECAUSE EVERY GRAIN OF SAND IS NESSECEARY TO CREATE A BEAUTIFLU SANDY BEACH. WE HAVE OUR PLACE AND SHULD BE AT PEACE WITH THAT. ACCEPTANCE OF WHO AND WHAT WE ARE IS WHAT A CREATOR WOULD WANT US TO ACHIEVE.
And so...Carl has told you HOW God made us; the integral steps from the big bang up until present day. But he doesn't explain WHY. Scientists are well meaning and some are pretty accurate but without the WHY we exist even at all does not explain the full story. It would be like reading a single chapter in a book and saying you know all that that book is about. All I can say is continue reading because the story is not over until the creator says it is all over...
Back then he didn't identify as an Atheist simply because the religious had insisted in the past that the name meant something it dosn't. Atheists don't claim to know that no Gods exist. Theism/Atheist are not matters of knowledge; only belief.
Athiests simply lack a belief in any gods. By that correct definition - Sagan was an Atheist.
well yeah, I usually consider atheism to be a harder line than that though(even though that may not be the definition). I consider myself an atheist btw...
@lwblack64 And what if there is no god, or gods? What if there is NO reason to our existence? What if humanity has no inherent purpose? Why must you assume that we have a 'special' place and status in the universe?
Just because life exists, does not mean that there is a reason that it exists. We are all nothing more than a cluster of cells made out of carbon, which has somehow achieved sentience and intelligence. And you know what? That's OK! Because as humans, we can define our own purpose.
@RadimirWackytov Look at all the amazing achievements of humankind. We're the first creature that has been to another world. Well look at the landscape of Mars on a daily basis. Every year we achieve more and more. Yet we hear the religious say, 'is there no purpose?'
Are you confusing humankind's purpose for your own personal greed for immortality and importance? It is well documented that the 'purpose' of the human race to advance, stops when religion takes charge.
@lwblack64 life doesnt need meaning to exist. The WHY is inconsequential to the universe. Things just happen. WE give meaning. That doesnt mean is not important, it just means in the beginning it wasn't important. Should it be so important for an unwanted child to know his birth was accidental? Does that prevent him from becoming a great person? no. Now that we exist, we give our existence meaning.
i found it odd that everyone on here said they were getting emotional i mean ive always believed in this so its not new, then i watched it and i got emotional too, apart from hearing the wonders of the universe im guessing its the mix or powerful narration and music
this man was a true icon of the truth. The truth is well spelled out with his knowaldge of the cosmos and Space Stuff,he certainly had me captivated when i was 14 and still does to this day... Genius..!
@ jedsdimension..Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" is a wonderful series, It changed the way i looked at the world, stars, religion, life, and my purpose in the world. Check it out, It's amazing.
So I just now came across this... what he is saying are things that since I could really think for myself have thought of I am very happy right now haha knowing that there was someone out there who thought the same and got his views out to people is awesome I mean I knew of others who have these views but the way this guy explains it is perfect I will have to look into more stuff by Carl anyone who tackles topics like these interest me :) Won't be getting much sleep tonight thats for sure haha
I love Cosmos. I wish I were as smart as Sagan. I would love to be able to understand science like he could. I don't quite have the mind of a scientist, though. All I can really do is appreciate it.
Carl Sagan woke me up from my religious slumber when they were ridiculing him in my churches youth group surprisingly by showing one of his shows. It had the opposite effect for me even though i was what i thought was a undieing unbreakable christian for 6 years. I now am highly knowledgeable in astrophysics and quantum mechanics and am very happy with my new perspective on humanity and our universe and life in general.
id love to stay and watch the rest of this in my bed on my laptop, but i gotta save some battery so i can jackoff to porn in the morning. night all

These examples are just the few of my own theory's of matter, time, space etc.. - Markus Räisänen 12

@TeamColorKing Nope.

Another great pioneer of science and voice of reason which spoke out in a time when his society was plunged in fear, ignorance, hatred, hypocrisy, greed, stupidity, nuclear arrogance and naivity. Carl Sagan opened a window of opportunity for us to better ourselves.
I salute this great man and his sublime, beautiful way of explaining science.

my old aunt was laughing at me when i told her that we came from the stars, "starstuff" i said, ignorance it seems does survive the years and generations, consider yourself lucky, that you understand this, that you have critical thinking mind and don't believe that a god made you out of mud
charliebell01 6 months ago 5
@charliebell01 Realizing or excepting the possibility that we are made from star dust does not exclude God...a creator.
JNieckarz 6 months ago
@JNieckarz We can trace the elements of our body to the stellar furnaces from which they came, and then back to the Big Bang. We now understand this process, more or less, in detail and over the course of billions of years. At no point does this hypothesis require a God, nor does it seem prudent to introduce one for any reason except as a synonym for "science has not yet figured this part out". That's about all God has done for the world for thousands of years- serving us as a placeholder.
7j8i9m 6 months ago 2
@7j8i9m Respectfully disagreeing, I still believe this does not absolutely exclude God.
JNieckarz 6 months ago
Maybe not exclude, but your god is not required.
justinsgil185 6 months ago
@JNieckarz "This does not absolutely exclude God." True. But so what? The fact that it's *possible* for a god to exist does not at all justify belief that one actually does exist. In order to be justified in believing anything, you must present compelling, affirmative, logical evidence in favor of that belief. Religious beliefs are no exception to this standard. I'm assuming you believe God exists, so I'd be very interested in hearing if you can demonstrate he actually does exist.
nichtmuttersprachler 6 months ago
@nichtmuttersprachler Tell me where the elements of life first came from? I'm not sure either of us know can prove our points. Which is why you can't absolutely disclude the other.
JNieckarz 6 months ago
@JNieckarz "Tell me where the elements of life first came from?" The current theory of abiogenesis proposes that the first nucleotides and amino acids came from carbonaceous chondrites, deep-sea vents, and Earth’s primitive atmosphere. These building blocks of life then polymerized to form RNA and amino acids, which became enclosed in membranes. Finally, these membrane-enclosed biological polymers acquired cellular properties, which marked the beginning of primitive life on Earth.
nichtmuttersprachler 5 months ago
@nichtmuttersprachler Then where did "carbonaceous chondrites, deep-sea vents, and Earth’s primitive atmosphere" come from? ;-)
JNieckarz 5 months ago
@JNieckarz Since that question goes beyond the scope of my biology education, I myself am not sure. I'm not sure if you're genuinely curious about the answer to that question, but if you are, you should try reading some relevant scientific literature such as textbooks or peer-reviewed journals.
nichtmuttersprachler 5 months ago
@JNieckarz
Andreazor 5 months ago
@Andreazor No where did I say "my imagination is right", or the right one. My first reply was in regards to this statement - "my old aunt was laughing at me when i told her that we came from the stars, "starstuff" i said, ignorance it seems does survive the years and generations, consider yourself lucky, that you understand this, that you have critical thinking mind and don't believe that a god made you out of mud"
That statement claims "their" imagination is the correct one.
JNieckarz 5 months ago
@Andreazor And simple minds don't search for these videos and enjoy them as much I do.
JNieckarz 5 months ago
@7j8i9m
I love what you've written there, I'm gonna have to save it to my "Quotes" document!
Andreazor 5 months ago
@JNieckarz "...does not exclude God." So what? Do you really think the fact that it's *possible* for a god to exist is at all compelling? To quote Carl Sagan, "Your inability to invalidate my hypothesis is not at all the same thing as proving it true." If you want to demonstrate a deity exists, you must provide extraordinary evidence for that extraordinary claim. Stating that others haven't disproved your claim does not at all show that your claim has any validity.

ACCEPTANCE OF WHO AND WHAT WE ARE IS WHAT A CREATOR WOULD WANT US TO ACHIEVE.
grannykempock 7 months ago
22 creationists are MAD.
bz2high 7 months ago
And so...Carl has told you HOW God made us; the integral steps from the big bang up until present day. But he doesn't explain WHY. Scientists are well meaning and some are pretty accurate but without the WHY we exist even at all does not explain the full story. It would be like reading a single chapter in a book and saying you know all that that book is about. All I can say is continue reading because the story is not over until the creator says it is all over...

@lwblack64 You did know that Carl Sagan was an atheist right?
Bab5crusade 7 months ago
@Bab5crusade
he was an agnostic actually.
zacharymullin 7 months ago
@zacharymullin
Back then he didn't identify as an Atheist simply because the religious had insisted in the past that the name meant something it dosn't. Atheists don't claim to know that no Gods exist. Theism/Atheist are not matters of knowledge; only belief.
Athiests simply lack a belief in any gods. By that correct definition - Sagan was an Atheist.
ackmonra 7 months ago
@ackmonra
well yeah, I usually consider atheism to be a harder line than that though(even though that may not be the definition). I consider myself an atheist btw...
zacharymullin 7 months ago
@lwblack64 And what if there is no god, or gods? What if there is NO reason to our existence? What if humanity has no inherent purpose? Why must you assume that we have a 'special' place and status in the universe?
Just because life exists, does not mean that there is a reason that it exists. We are all nothing more than a cluster of cells made out of carbon, which has somehow achieved sentience and intelligence. And you know what? That's OK! Because as humans, we can define our own purpose.
RadimirWackytov 7 months ago
@RadimirWackytov Look at all the amazing achievements of humankind. We're the first creature that has been to another world. Well look at the landscape of Mars on a daily basis. Every year we achieve more and more. Yet we hear the religious say, 'is there no purpose?'
Are you confusing humankind's purpose for your own personal greed for immortality and importance? It is well documented that the 'purpose' of the human race to advance, stops when religion takes charge.
Ackers555 7 months ago 2
@lwblack64 life doesnt need meaning to exist. The WHY is inconsequential to the universe. Things just happen. WE give meaning. That doesnt mean is not important, it just means in the beginning it wasn't important. Should it be so important for an unwanted child to know his birth was accidental? Does that prevent him from becoming a great person? no. Now that we exist, we give our existence meaning.
