No joke originally Hittel discussed this with Anthony to become a bass player and I never figured out why it never happened. Flea wasn't really a bass player before RHCP so the band coulda gone anywhere. Chad is a drummer by nature and so was Jack Irons. John Frusciante was to replace Hittel Slovak so in essence the position of bass/vocals was undecided at first.

thats not really true...flea wanted to be a jazz musician cos he used to play the trumpet for most of his life, hillel noticed his musical ability and taught him bass so he could join some of his early bands, and flea just picked it up really quickly, and then rhcp was formed very soon after

ok....read Scar Tissue, in which Anthony says Hillel taught Flea to play bass so he could join Anthym or whatever, which became What Is This?. That was years before the Chili Peppers, whilst Flea, Anthony and Hillel were still in high school. Flea left What Is This? to join Fear, but left soon after because of conflicts with the embryonic Chili Peppers.
