Regarding reversing while running, A marine compound engine while is it multiple cylinders they are in series. Therefore a compound engine is like a single cylinder engine in that they have dead spots and will not self start all of the time. In order to make them self starting there was a valve called a "simpling valve" that would be turned to place the cylinders in parallel for starting and then closed to place them back in series.
