right on man, a guy I know threw away a beautiful $100 English hand-forged pitchfork because he broke the handle, and I was pissed, cause I definitely would have taken it and fixed it up in a jiff.
Great tip. I use my Pop's tools that are 90+ years old and every now and then I have to replace a handle like this. I have 5 tools to fix at the moment. Most haven't had to be replaced yet.
Normally, I agree with you, but this tip is rubbish. The proper fix for broken-off handles is to acquire the ultimate, handy-dandy garden tool - small children. The shortened handles are fine for them. That's why my mother had five kids - she had a garden, broken handles, and no child labor laws at the time.
Good idea. I spent a silly amount of time last year trying to dig the wood out of an old pitchfork head. Drilling, prying etc. Next time I'll just toss it in the fireplace. Actually might go do it with that one as I don't think I ever got the wood clean out!
It never would have occured to me to burn the handle out. I would've just bashed on it and picked at it until I either got the thing out (probably mashing a thumb or 2 in the process) or I wouldn't be able to get it out and I'd end up really pissed and just throwingthe thing away or into a corner somewhere to continue bashing on it later when my thumb hurt less...
why do the use wodd that spinter as a handle

Good tip, but I wonder if the fire gets hot enough to alter the "temper" of the steel? Hopefully not in a harmful way.

Lacquering the handles with a few coats will help extend the tools lifetime too bro. No splinters at least.
