how 'bout some of the sound track work for the original run (not the remakes) of Johnny Quest - especially the closing theme also the sound track from "The Mambo Kings" is loaded with great sounds !
Thank You for Posting the Gauntlet! I remember seeing this as the movie of the week on TV. Mom and Dan didn't get why I was more excited over the soundtrack than the movie.
Cat is my favorite with Ingram behind of course. Mendez was also terrific. Honestly, I know its blasphemy and I have had this convo quite a few times but I have never liked Maynard's playing all that much. The constant shaking annoys me and its more showy than cat's screeching.
I wonder if someone has put up a similar thing for best trumpet soundtracks? Not just high note stuff but trumpet heavy movies. I would vote for Sugar Hill with Blanchard playing throughout. Spike Lee used trumpets alot
As usual, the music is better than the movie and the musicians better than the acting. Like Cat Anderson playing above the total crap movie Anatomy of A Murder and over rated Jimmy Stewart delivering those stupid movie lines. If only he could've mumbled more then we could hear more trumpet. The Guantlet was pretty good though, I forgot about the great trumpets in that scene. Thanks for posting.
@gplus46 Nowadays composers just throw in loud huge low brass stuff. Can't complain since I'm a trombone player myself, but it would be nice to get a few solos like this back into movies these days.
They are all very impressive (I agree with the others the the Incredibles should be included), but for my money I'd have to put the Cat Anderson clip at the top. Waynard is just amazing for his cleanliness, but I enjoy that Jon Faddis clip musically (the whole score is awesome, watch the movie!). Now I have to go watch Anatomy of a Murder, excuse me.
Doc Severinsen is still one of the greats. I remember reading a quote from him in Maynard's book" MF HORN". Upon hearing Maynard warming up before a gig in Ontario, Canada he said; "I don't know why I kept playing after that".
@agbulmer My appologies, I didn't mean to be rude. Its simply that trompetist are known to have a big ego when it comes to Screaming ;) (and this is not an insult either). My comment was meant to be some kind of musicien inside joke however my english skills are so bad it probably look like an arrogant comment as you said. Thanks for reminding me Im an asshole. I apreciate that.
Wayne says that solo was suggested in the studio by Stallone himself, who wanted to know if someone could play "the Maynard solo" over the suite. There were some differences in key and meter, but basically Wayne figured it out on the spot.

In my opinion, that is some of Faddis' most interesting work, and I told him so once. I also mentioned that it was a pity that the soundtrack was out of print, and asked him if he had heard whether it would be reissued, to which he replied, "How the fuck should I know?".
Loads of fun. I agree on "The Incredibles". Also, not so great a film, or a song (not even close to the Ellington), but the "Theme to LA's Team" entrance from "The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh" featuring Doc Severinsen was a gas (go to the end if you can't stomach the disco). Also, who hit those double octaves on the opening to Bob Balaban's very sick ca. 1988 flick "Parents"?
@staxjohnson The tune over the opening credits of Parents is Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White, a Perez Prado recording from the 50's. The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh was something I never heard of, so I just checked it out (someone else has already posted it on youtube). Doc sounds amazing in it, really great.
@kdkn92 He admittedly is an absolute monster, but i still stick by maynard and faddis for having more interesting styles. Wayne is a machine but faddis puts on a show and has a really slick sound
Beautiful work putting this together! When you listen to the soundtrack for Uncle Joe Shannon, you wonder what's going on, but when you see it in context with the movie, it becomes very emotional. Thanks!
This is amazing. The Bud Brisbois clip made me laugh out loud just because it was so goofy, especially in contrast with what was going on in the movie (which clearly wasn't supposed to be funny). Favorite.
The Incredibles has a solo in "Saving Metroville" where Wayne Bergeron belts out a double C
