  • Does it bring a loss of accuracy shooting the .22 through a much bigger barrel than it needs?

  • Great review!

  • Just bought one

  • I'm def looking into this

  • Good review, how many rounds do you have down the tube with the conversion bolt? Any noticeable ware?

  • One of the best reviewsof almost anything gun related on YouTube. The way he explains things and helps u to visualize everything is invaluable in a review! Thanks so much!

  • this guys video are the best in detail and description i have yet to see. His video normally explain everything minus the software used to engineer the products he reviews. Great job on all the vids thumbs up.

  • Grat vid, but two questions 1. Have you had problems with the carbon building up to the point where the gun doesn't operate and 2. Because the .22lr bullets are not jacketed is there any chance they could damage the barrel. Any info would be greatly appreciated

  • exactly what type of gun do u have, and how much did it cost

  • @95coleman Its a Stag Arms Model 2, 5.56, M4. For price check the net for current price.

    :)

  • i just have one question will this conversion kit work with bushmaster ar-14 m4 style rifle that shoots 5.56 / .223 or will i have to do mods with the conversion kit

  • @TheLonghorn29335 My Stag Arms M4 is a 5.56 and it works fine, you shouldnt have any problems but to be sure contact CMMG and ask them.

    :)

  • great in depth review!

  • Great topic, sorry to be so late to the party. Many should not look at this solely as away to save money, but more to versatility "one is none and two is one". With the ability to shoot 22LR in the AR, you now have 2-options for ammo, utilizing replacement bolt and magazine change. Best regards

  • you have to purchase different clips that fits the.22 ? or you use the same ammo clip for .223 ? / NEVERMIND I FOUND BOTH ITEMS FOR SALE ITS CALLED :CMMG Conv Kit 22LR Stainless 1-Mag AR Rifles

  • you have to purchase different clips that fits the.22 ? or you use the same ammo clip for .223 ?

  • maby a stupid question but is it possible when you have a .223 lower to run different calibers uppers on it? which calibers are possible if it can?

  • So I cud convert my smith n wesson mp 15 22 to cmmg 22 LR...dats tite....where can I order that @

  • Fantastic video!

  • I'm confused, does a 5.56mm barrel fit the .22? It's diameter is 5.6mm, sorry I feel dumb.

  • @RuthlessZabusa

Yes. The .223 caliber is the same size as the .22 rimfire. 5.56mm=.223in=.22in

  • @danieldefenseM4 Okay thanks, does it tend to function better in a 5.56 or .223 chamber?

  • @RuthlessZabusa

I don't think the chamber really matters with the kit. I have a 5.56 chamber and it functions just fine.

  • I know the 223 platform can be converted to fire 22 BUT my question is can you convert the S&W or winchester 22 to fire 223?

  • do they make a a2 style stock that the .22 conversion kit will fit into? so that you always have it and all you would have to carry is a clip for .22 and a clip for 223

  • I bought one of the stainless steel CNMG conversion kits and have had a lot of luck with it. It runs fine in my Bushmaster and a build that I put together. I saw another guy try to run the blued version in a Colt and he had a failure to fire with 2 out of 3 rnds. The same thing happened when I tried his conversion kit in my Bushmaster.

I bought mine knowing that I might have to send it back to get one that works but was happy to see that I had no issues.

    BTW, run copper jacketed bullets.

  • What a great video and detailed review! You sold me on buying this conversion kit the moment you showed how incredibly simple it was to make the switch. Seriously - I haven't logged in to my account for quite some time, but I had to so that I could let you know what an incredibly great job you did with this.

    Thanks!

  • Excellent overall review. You covered everything I wanted to know. Great job.

  • Great review....the best I have seen....I have been thinking of getting one for my M-15 A4 CB....question....do you use oil or grease....on the conversion kit....I run Mil-comm TW25B gun grease in both my M-15 and AR-10...and pistols and shotguns...ect....

thanks again for the review...put it on my Gun Tech list.....

    ETHRON1

  • @ETHRON1 The instructions say to put a few drops on the rails.

    :)

  • cool dude ima get one. thanks for the vid.

  • Does it work to use a 223silencer on this?

  • i like guns cause they're made for killing people

  • Which AR model/brand is this?

  • Will this conversion work with a lefty AR?

  • Ah, found the answer. Stag is making a lefty conversion kit. THANK GOD!

  • @MrOhyeah66 CMMG has right handed & left handed conversion bolts = good stuff.

    :D

  • with the conversion kit you dont need to swap out a 223 barrle for a 22?

  • @dylaninLG With the CMMG you do not need another barrel - just put in the conversion bolt and your good to go, just like the video show.

    :)

  • @dylaninLG .. a .22lr bullet is .222 of an inch so its just barely smaller then the bore. accuracy isnt 100% but its just about the same. the gas system gets a little clogged after awhile from the .22lr but a few quick blasts of .223 will take care of it. no dedicated barrel needed.

  • @dylaninLG you don't but it isn't as accurate as when the 223 is used

  • I used my iron sights as well, and they were great! Doubt I could split cards tho..lol..But next time I'm tryin to ..It was the aimpoint I had to resight ..

  • @biggdaddyfats Aimpoints are nice - I am looking at either getting aimpoint or a trijicon for my rig. I'm still researching and trying to decide which one to get. Anyway keep up the good work & happy holidays.

    :)

  • I just got mine for x mas and I was thinking about where did u buy your silencer from ?

  • Ok to dry fire?

  • I have this rig. and I'll agree it kicks butt for those who don't want to spend all the money on .223 ammo..thats why I bought mine. The only problem I have is you have to resight your optics if you don't have iron sights. thats the only drawback...mho

  • @biggdaddyfats Interesting because I didnt have to resight my irons at all. I used the CMMG & my original iron battle sight & I split playing cards at 20', 50', 100', 150' & 300'. Of course any farther out its hard but for run & gun & doing movement & transition drills it rocks.

I really like the CMMG conversion bolts

    :)

  • It looks like you over grease your bolt(s) That grime on the 22lr looked "wet". And the .223 bolt looks like you just pulled out of a swiming pool of penzoil. Is there a reason?

  • Where do you get this CMMG Conversion Kit?

    Thanks

  • would a 1:7 twist rate barrel work for this for optimal performance?

  • great video. I was going to get the sig522, but I would rather get AR15 with the conversion kit.

  • one thing i have to ask about the conversion. barrle damage..... what are the long term effects of using the 22lr bolt conversion? any possible damage to any gun parts over a long time use? accuracy?

  • @golfer15963Well I can only answer to what I experienced = in about 4,000 or so rounds I have not seen any barrel damage. I use the recommended ammo and after I shoot a bunch of .22LR I shoot some .233/5.56, then I clean the rig with a good bore brush.

As for accuracy, I havent seen any negative effects. I know that with iron sights & the CMMG, I can split a playing card at 10 ', 15', 50', 100', 150' & even 300'. Check out my playing card vids to see. I hope this helps.

    :)

  • awesome, thanks!...the 525 federal packs here are up to $20, so 3.8 cents per round..and that's the cheapest.

  • thank you for a great review... well done

  • what brand of AMMO .22LR did u use?

  • Comment removed

  • can you use this kit with a bushmaster M4? and if so what would the accuracy be like? i mean .22 and .223 are similar but its not going to fit the barrel perfectly. and what if you have 5.56? can you only use the kit for .223 remington?

  • @muscle69camaro My AR is a 5.56 model and the accuracy is great, also works with .223 models. As for accuracy its excellent. I used my 5.56 rig & the conversion bolt to split playing cards at close distances all the way out to 150' and even 300'. I hear the stainless steel version is even better.

    I hope this helps.

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview theres a stainless steel version bolt? what is the one made of normally, aluminum? and this should fit an M4 because i think they have the same bolt as an ar-15 right?

  • Yup love mine but the extractor spring is realy weak maybe that's just mine any way's I recomend it to any one with an ar15 chamberd in 556 - 223 ofcourse I'll most likely buy the stainless later

  • how dirty does the barrel and upper reciever get from those 22s?

im looking into buying this but i dont wanna gunk up my upper. its a vltor mur.

id like to prolong it as long as possible

  • @LiloHart It gets dirty but if you clean & maintain your firearm as you should, its not a problem. The trade off is you get to fire 22 LR and save bunch of $ vs shooting .223 / 5.56 ammo.

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview

    very true

i have a gas piston ar but i clean it after every shoot just cause im the kind of person who loves tinkering haha

is it worth getting the stainless steel version over standard?

debating if i really want to spend 90 more dollars on it

  • @LiloHart I have heard from a bunch of ppl that the stainless is a bit better than the standard version. More precision, etc.

If you do a lot of training with your rig, then going with the stainless might be the answer. You can save a lot of $ over the long term.

Not sure how much you shoot, but its something to consider.

    :)

  • @LiloHart OUCH!!! .50 to .70c each? and i thought my .40c federals were expensive

  • @LiloHart

    SS over standard

SS is kind of gun hang on the wall for people to say NICE GUN

Black gun is a color of war:: Souvenir of each place or soldiers went: Vietnam, Korea...Iraq..ect...

    - just my opinion

  • u can put in ops piston in instead of gas save on cleaning

  • u need 22 mag too or use sam 223 mag?

  • @paonmao00 You have to have a cmmg .22 LR mag. One came with the conversion kit.

    :)

  • the 1 I got, gets stuck in the upper.

  • @IGot556OnIt Then contact CMMG and tell them about it. I have yet to hear of them not making it right with a customer.

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview Emails from CMMG Technical Support before seeing the videos; If you have a small chamber, the chamber adapter can be turned down and the unit will be easier to remove, if it is sticking on the chamber adapter. if the frame or bolt is sticking there are other problems. And after; That looks O.K. to me. it should not be too loose or lead will build up between the adapter and the chamber and glue the unit in place.

  • @IGot556OnIt when you say "small chamber" do you mean you have an AR that is chambered for only the .223 spec and not 5.56?

  • Who makes the magazine coupler you are using? Nice Review.

  • @GADeerHunter1 Check out my review of the Safariland Mag Doubler

    /watch?v=hdzihlMyPDI

    :)

  • Awesome video! I learned a lot and it answered a few questions I had about the conversion kit. So you don't recommend a dedicated AR15 top for the .22?

  • @vbp6us 22 uppers are good but they cost anywhere from $300 to $800+ whereas the cmmg conversion kit cost from $140 to $250+.

This conversion is a great alternative for those that cant afford or want a dedicated upper.

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview

Great, thank you very much. With guns as you know, it's really hard to know if the product you're buying will be up to par but thanks to guys like you, buying and demonstrating these items for us, I can make my purchase without fear/regret. :) Keep up the good work.

  • very very nice. watched this video to see how to change the bolts..and you answered every question i had. Thank You!!

  • @dominicmorlino Your welcome

    thanks for watching.

    :)

  • Great vid. I am looking into getting the conversion and wanted to get your thoughts about a few things. I have heard some people say that they wouldn't use the kit in their .223 for fear it would "gum" it up. Have you had an problems yourself with this or heard of anything like this happening with this conversion bolt?

    Thanks

  • @baseball27e I have shot thousands of rounds thru my rig with .22 LR with no problems. Sure the 22s are dirtier than .223/5.56 ammo but nothing a good cleaning can fix.

Now I have heard rumors of it doing bad things but for some reason on one can put me in touch with someone that actually had said problems (so its hearsay).

    :)

  • Nice overview. Thanks

  • @jeffshootsstuff Your welcome.

    :)

  • Got this kit and it worked flawlessly. 550 rounds of the federal (walmart 550 pack) ammo without one single problem. NOT a single problem. impressive.

  • @Gspsx I have heard that some ppl had problems with the old conversion bolt like the one I have, but the newer ones are even better.

    :)

  • k ive got a question, you know how a normal .22 runs on a 1: 16 twist rate while the .223 is usually a 1:6 1:7 1:9 twist rate? well have you had any problems with the ammo spinning too fast and fragmenting?

  • @lgc41004 I have not had any problems with fragging.

    :)

  • k ive got a question, you know how a normal .22 runs on a 1: 16 twist rate while the .223 is usually a 1:6 1:7 1:9 twist rate? well have you had any problems with the ammo spinning too fast and fragmenting?

  • I just ordered this kit from a online store. It came in a 1 piece plastic box with the mag, like something that would hang at Walmart. The thing would NOT cycle anything, I think I got 20 Federals to cycle and maybe 4 or 5 CCI's. I tried everything from grease to dry lube and I used every brand .22 that I could find spending about 200 bucks on ammo. Nothing could get it to work, I sent it back and in a week a small box with a tube in it came. It was a new stainless model and it cycles it all :)

  • is that a fake can you have on the barrel?

  • I got my kit and no go dude. My CMMG wont extract anything! 100's of rounds later she just wont feed. I tried every ammo I could find in .22LR, I think I spent about 200 bucks and no difference. I got the stainless model too and nothing. So very disappointing to me, had I known they were making a new product and releasing it his summer I would have waited. Mine double and triple feeds, I have had to pull rounds out with pliers and it is damaging the unit. I dont know what to do at this point

  • @CorruptArsenal I sent mine back after I spent over $250 on ammo. I was worried because you can NOT take ammo back, CMMG sent me a new stainless version back in a tube and it works great! Cycles everything I put in it. I had 2 misfeeds in the last 200 rounds and it was user error. I wish I would have known they were making a newer model though because I wold have waited! But she works so I wont complain, so far so good! Send it back, they will fix or replace it and pay for uturn shipping

  • @CorruptArsenal If that happened to me I would return & get a refund.

Personally I have not had a problem except a few failure to eject (but thats to be expected with all .22s. I do hear the stainless steel is better than the old one.

BTW what type of platform are you using with it? I have heard that ppl who make their own ar with many different parts do have problems with cycling ammo.

Whatever happened return it and get your money back.

    :)

  • I love the kit, without the right hammer it shoots off 2-3 rd bursts every now and then, at 100 yards the rds fall in a 2-3 inch group during the burst

  • @SS13E3

Are you talking about replacing the lower reciever hammer ? What AR15s need to have the hammers changed out to use the CMMG kit ?

  • @skinnadoor

there's a preferred lower reciever set up that should be used with this kit, Im not sure...i think rounded hammers work better

i really dont care, i dont mind the random burst

  • wouldn't u have to change barrels for the smaller bullet

  • @JameR242 Nope because the barrel is .223 and the smaller bullet is .22.

    Works great.

    :)

  • can you use a 5.56 for this?

  • @snakeyes7711 Yes, the M4 I have is a milspec 5.56 barrel and it works great as you see.

    :)

  • is there any way to covert a .308 to an ar 15 body style. my thought was buying a .308 hunting rifle and take the stock and guard off of it and then take the barrel and put it on somethin like the body style of an ar 15. kinda like making a smaller caliber intervention. but i was thinking of making it a body style of the intervention or something of that style. can i do that? i appreciate any ideas. thank you

  • Hello, I took my CMMG kit out today and it is shooting 3 to 5 round bursts. Do you have any idea why this is happening? I think I should send it back and get the stainless version.

  • @EastJesus87 It might be the ammo your shooting. I have noticed that with most .22 firearms, they are peculiar when it comes to ammo, and this is also true with the CMMG.

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview Why is it always about he ammo? Properly made machinery should run any Ammo!! My .22 Savage Arms will eat anything you put in her but a CMMG that costs more wont? I just ordered this kit to put in a S&W MP15 that wont cycle a damn thing anyway, makes no difference in the ammo brand.

  • @CorruptArsenal Yes I will shoot it some more and give it a chance. I have the regular version. I will try some copper plated cartridges next time. I ordered a Rounded Hammer like they recommend I will see how it works.

  • @CorruptArsenal I agree but not much one can do but follow the directions. CMMG on their website has a list of ammo that they do not recommend. Of course when I use that, it doesnt work that well, but when I use recommended ammo it works fine.

    :)

  • @EastJesus87 Wait until she breaks down a little bit. Did you buy the stainless model? CMMG just announced they have a brand new model that is fail proof that they are releasing this Summer, send yours back to them! And FYI your Hammer might be dragging the bottom of the Bolt causing short bursts. Good Luck

  • @CorruptArsenal Thanks CA for the info, I will check with CMMG and see if I can trade it in. That would be cool.

    :D

  • Would that filth from the .22 clog up the DI tube? And does this run all .22 ammo pretty wel, and how would it do with a 1/7 inch twist (your ballpark figure)?

  • @nowthisisstupid I've shot thousands of .22 rounds thru my rig and I havent had any problems, other than it takes a wee bit longer to clean.

    :)

  • @SafeArmsReview Thank you sir.

  • wouldnt the barrel be too big for the 22 round?

  • @benjamin22cal No check the measurements of the .223 and .22

    :)

  • Hey Steve. The only thing I would recommend is a thorough cleaning before switching back and forth between the regular bolt and the conversion bolt, since the conversion has that mock shell casing that fits in the chamber. Excess carbon and gunk in there can REALLY wear the finish on the conversion bolt - I found that out the hard way. I suppose it could wear or score your chamber too, but that isn't terribly likely unless you've abused the snot out of your rifle.

  • @FrontRangeFuzz Cleaning is an absolute must.

    :)

  • Can a person use this type of .22lr system to a newer Model AR-15/M-16 system that does not use the gas impingement system of the original M-16 series of rifles. Can it be used on M-16/M4 systems that are now using the improved gas piston system vs the older gas impingement setup?

  • Just tested my new stainless cmmg conversion bolt on my Bushmaster and found that cheap Remington Golden Bullet feeds and cycles just fine. Only had one FTE out of 200 or so rounds fired where the brass cracked and became stuck in the chamber.

  • Thanks for the review. what type of flash compensator do you have on your AR? is it part of the barrel or does it screw on? and will it work with a cut m4 type barrel?

  • WHat kind of supressor is that you have? How much was it?

  • Nice review, I'm really thinking of buying the conversion kit, I'm leaning more towards the stainless steel kit.

  • Do you know if you can use this with an AR that has a gas piston on it like on POFs?

  • I'm not sure if you can - you would have to contact the manufacture and ask.

    Good question.

    :)

  • Here is their response:

"Our piston rifles will require you to remove the gas piston and set the

gas system to off for the 22 conversion to fit and operate in the upper."

I assume the rifle becomes manual, as in, you need to pull the charging handle back to eject the spent round and load a new one. For a little more than the price of the conversion kit, you may be able to get a cheap 22 upper.

  • Excellent review!

I plan on pickin up either the Spikes Nickel-plated or CMMG stainless model soon.

Quick question, what brand of mag clamp are you using in this video?

  • don't u have to chage berrals?

  • Nope and thats what makes this a great training tool - you can shoot regular 223/5.56 or 22

    ;)

  • o thanks :)

  • Im getting this next and Im so excited. I got on here to check out an indepth review and I got one. Thanks. BTW Im happy to see another Stag Fan, I have never had a single jam through mine and im using the crappy Federal rounds. Thats something Colt and DPMS fans can't say.

  • I like the style of your videos and your in depth yet concise format. If I had an AR-15, I would probably get this.

  • Great info----I am now confident about the conversion and am going to get one this spring. Thanks!

  • any reliability issues

  • is there a danger of led getting in the gas tube?

  • Not that I am aware of

    :)

  • They say to fire a .223 every few hundred rounds to clear out the system, but my friend has a few thousand rounds of .22 in his CMMG M-forgery and he hasn't had an issue.

  • Some people have recommended firing some .223/5.56 down the barrel every few hundred rounds of .22LR to keep the gas system cleared out...just in case. And you'll want to avoid junk, waxy ammo like that Thunderbolt garbage.

  • If you intend on shooting a crap ton and are somewhat worried about accuracy, the Tac Sol LT upper is a pretty good choice too. But this is a lot cheaper than than the complete upper

  • Great Video, I love my AR but hate paying the price to play. I have seen these at CTD and have been skeptical . Thanks

  • im going to get a spikes complete 22 upper soon

  • Picked up the stainless CMMG kit from MacTec Enterprises for $186.00. Also, get a couple of extra Black Dog mags, MacTec prices cheapest around at $19/ea. other sites are $29-35. My Bushmaster spits out those little bullets like watermelon seeds. BUT, have used only high velocity, copper coated .22lr. by Federal. Champion 535 rd box for $22.00. No problems! Awesome CHEAP fun! Blow a few .223 through after shooting to clear out residue and follow up with a good cleaning. Way too much fun!

  • Steve -

Another great product review for SAR. Excellent!

Again, compliments to your attention to detail on your reviews.

    ★★★★★

  • Thanks for watching

I hope to keep the good vids coming.

    :)

  • That's AWESOME! Can't wait to pick this up, some subsonic .22 lr's and let er rip.

  • It is awesome - me, wife & kid all like how we can practice and not have to worry bout spending a ton of money.

    :D

  • I just checked the price tag, next paycheck.... Little treat for myself. Thank you for showing this. Have you tried the subsonic ammo? My brother in law has a marlin model 60 (I think?) and it was super quiet. Like ok to shoot in your backyard in the city quiet.

  • Great video thank you very much

  • Your welcome, glad you liked it.

    :)

  • Great video and information on that kit. Going to order one and save some money on rounds.

  • thanks for watching, its a great tool with the high cost of .223/5.56 ammo

    ;)

  • I have a AE Ciener and once I gotthe right hammer installed it works great. Love those plastic magts. 26 rounds of no problems

  • What make is your AR?

  • Stag Arms 5.56

    :)

  • Is it safe to shoot high velocity lead 22 rounds through an Ar with this conversion?

  • I would have to say its pretty safe (so far).

I've put about 2,500-3,000 22 rounds with this conversion and haven't had any problems. Had some bad rounds that didnt go off (ammunition's fault, not the weapon or conversion) and a few jams (not uncommon with 22 rounds) but nothing unsafe.

Some ppl say it can lead up the groves in the barrel, but I always fire a few .223 rounds after shooting, then give it a good cleaning.

    :)

  • I've been looking at this exact conversion kit for my DPMS Panther Lite. Still not sure if I'm gonna grab it but this video was very nice to watch.

By the way, what lube do you use on your AR?

  • Thanks for watching & the compliment.

As for lube, I use the old military tried & true... BreakFree CLP

    ;)

  • Do you find it evaporating after a few weeks? I've been using the spray break free CLP and it usually is gone after 3 or so weeks.

  • I dont use the spray can stuff so maybe thats why I dont see any evaporation. Then again I do a lot of shooting too so maybe that has something to do with it as well.

    :)

  • Alright, I'm gonna pick myself up a bottle of the regular stuff.

    Thanks!

  • No problem, glad I could help.

Too often I see ppl using all kinds of expensive stuff (and I'm not rich), but in the end CLP does the trick. I dont have any rust on my firearms and I can put rounds on target & thats what counts.

    :)

  • thanks for your videos. are there any issues with using the same barrel?

  • some ppl say the lead 22 rounds can fowl up the barrel, but I havent noticed anything serious (nothing that cant be cleared out with a few .223 rounds and a stiff bore brush).

However my M4 is for running & gunning - IOW I dont care if I drop it, scratch the finish, etc. So with that said, I dont have any problems.

    I hope this helps.

    :)

  • Steve' in the action part of the .22 conversion as with my 10/22's I use a dry Teflon based lube sure cuts down on the grit and grime oil causes the dirty little .22 to have a soupy mess but not with dry lube action stays way cleaner and the dry lube is really all that is necessary for a .22 cal action and it will work even in cold weather. Thought I would share this with some of your viewers.

  • Thanks for the tip - dry lube sounds like something very useful in regards to the conversion - I'll have to get some and give it a try.

I think more ppl will need dry lube if obama keeps trying to save america via fascism.

    ;)
