Yes they certainly are painful and drain the power out of your core. At the same time, they are one of the best ways to strenghten the abs. I do them like twice a week. At first couldn't touch elbows with knees. Now I can touch bar with soles of feet in a slow controlled motion. Good luck.
Check out "gonzomaz1" videos and try to beat his leg lift hold and 125 bench crunches. Push it to the limit like he does for max results.

Those are good. I do leg raises with my legs till they touch the bar.
