Awesome video! This was the best tutorial I've found yet. Im preping for my very second drag show ever but I've never done drag king makeup before ( Somehow I look more masculine as a queen!) Anyways, I've spent tons of money on makeup already so I was hoping you could suggest some brands for the grease and fixer(?) that you used to do facial hair? Just want to make sure I get the right stuff.
Thanks again for the awesome video! You look fantastic with and without the makeup!
oooh thank you!!!! my friends say i am too pretty to be a drag king but i am determined to try and need tutorials! are you just using any old eye shadow on your face or a special make up
Thanks so much for the stubble technique! I had never heard of it before, but it's so much simpler than most other techniques. You're an extremely convincing man.
"it will make you look way too sketch and creepy!" i love it so much! <3 made me laugh, but thanks for the video, it was great, I'm a drag king from Canada, and I've never heard of the grease paint, so thanks for this video!
I find being younger, and wanting to look the same age while drag kinging, alot of the techniques make me look quite a few years older, which I'm trying to avoid. do you know anyways of doing that?
All the videos I have seen make for a much older drag king than I want to be. Is there a way to use makeup to still look my age while masculinizing my face? I'm in my late teens and have just been outlining my jaw bones which are quite high.
anyone sampled Sally Hansens new line of products?? they're high-quality - i continuously purchase more! did you know u can get no fee cosmetic samples through "Gratis Makeup Samples". i got my samples on 03/12/2010.
One year for halloween I used a really light coat of beard stipple. I used the makeup color called "beard stipple". I don't know if that made the difference but even up close people could not tell that it was makeup. I also put a little bit of liner on the outside of my lower lid to bring down the corners of my eyes. It was epic. I kept asking the guys that usually hit on me to kiss me and freeked them out. LOL.
@lironess hahaha. thanks for the suggestion, I'm gonna try some of that stuff :D I'm ftm and I won't be getting on T in time for no-shave November :( so I'll start with that and push no-shave november back like a month lol.
@MyGenesis122 be sure to get a stipple sponge or a fish tank filter sponge...same thing.....just cut a piece off of the fish tank sponge. Practice making tiny lines on your hands first.
What are some other techniques for making realistic facial hair? I don't have any grease paint, or that type of sponge. My friend suggested lightly dabbing mascara but it looks to uniform.
@MsVelorium26 You can get a big piece of sponge like that at the fish store in the area where they sell the tank filters. Then use brown cream eyeshadow. If it is liquid put some on a paper plate. Dot it on your hand until it just makes light spots for a more even look.
i don't understand the expected outcome of putting the shadow around your mouth, it just made your face look dirty, and the eyebrows were a little intence for me, but all in all, this is very interesting.
Thank you for posting this. I do a lot of crossplay (my favorite is dressing as Jareth from Labyrinth) and am always looking for ways to make it look more convincing.
@ashesXofXaxel Lol, Wallflower would require me to attempt to look more feminine. My next male costume is actually the Phantom of the Opera in his Red Death costume. The only bad part about that costume is I'm having to hand make the wig pieces I'll be using for his sideburns. =.= Not looking forward to that.
awe cute ^.^" you make a cute boy, i think the only thing you should of done was highlight the cheeks for like more of a high cheek bone O_O" cause yousa has a rounder face like me mew ^.^
ive been using a plain black pencil eye liner to make it look like I got a 5 o clock shadow. I wonder if I added dark brown beneath it first, if itd make it look more real....
WOW - great vid - am creating a resource website for ftms and their families - wondering if you would mind me linking to this vid? I have tried so many tricks re facial hair without knowing about the techniques you refer to in the vid -- thanks
I'm not planning on drag kinging since I'm a boring straight girl, but as a cosplayer (okay, this does come close to drag kinging, but the meaning is totally different, isn't it?), I find this really helpful, even more than any cosplay-tutorials I found concerning make-up to look masculine. You definetly did a good job, and I believe you pass for a guy on stage.
I especially liked how your voice was kinda low ;)
Wow. :) Thank you SO MUCH for this video. Seriously, it helped a lot on my understanding of the 'makeup' aspect of masculinity for females. lol. I've been seriously contemplating on trying out the whole 'drag king' thing. I mean, I'm not sure if I'm going to be freaked out up on stage and make a fool out of myself but it never hurts to try, right? <3
Thank you for posting this video! I'm really looking forward to trying out these techniques! A friend of mine also suggested metalic colors and greys. I'm going to try a variety of ways, cuz it's good to have lots of different looks for the different characters to portray on stage.
Seriously..all you gotta do is NOT wear make-up and have short hair and maybe wear false face hair and/or sideburns. REAL men are rustic and natural. Besides,it all lies anyway. YOU'RE NOT A GUY! you don't have the "parts" or DNA enough to be a man. You like girls..ok,whatever..but,you don't have to lie about your gender. And what's with "looking like your angry"? Dudes don't look angry..it's like you're making them out to be freaks. You don't get it obviously.
@HealingHeart79 Sometimes it's about illision. Not always about having the "right parts" or if an "X" chromosome lost a leg. It's art, it's interesting, and for some a way of life. Making the "angry" face is helping you find your shadows, learn your bone structure, cause we can't all just rip off our skin to figure it out. Maybe we might not get your point of view, but we get ours.
@HealingHeart79 As a drag king myself, I must say, you are not suppose to have the real male parts to be king. So, why are you putting the person who posted this video down? A drag king is a girl impersonating a man. She is suppose to have masculine looking make-up and things to give the illusion, it's all apart the fun and challenge of drag kinging. And if the person who posted this video, is a trans, so what. They can save for the parts they desire to have. And they can king too.
@HealingHeart79 Not trying to be mean, but how about trying to understand people who may be transgendered. I may be a lesbian and so I don't totally understand a person wanting to be the opposite gender. But I understand that it happens. And it's important that we accept and acknowledge that. A lot of straight people may not understand my sexuality, but it doesn't make it right for them to be cold about it. Just like us towards trans people. Everyone deserves support an understanding best we can
@HealingHeart79 draging is about becoming another character completely. It's basically acting. Who says about DNA anyway? Females have one different chromosome, that's it.
@3158012 Just bind them down or wear a big shirt. I think there are a lot of girls who drag that have big boobs. Sometimes I wonder how they can bind so well, lol. Maybe use some duct tape or a compression shirt or ace bandage.
Amazing! Im a photographer doing an assignment where i take 6 people off the street and turn them into the opposite gender for a photo shoot. With no money for a makeup stylist, this helps me out so much. Thanks so much!

This is fantastic, you are so well-spoken. I was actually looking for some make-up tips for a transformation suited for photography. I intended to do a photoshoot as a drag king. Do you have any recommendations that would help for film/stage/camera specifically? :-) I have never done this before.
if ppl can't find that fixative [sp?] spray, lightly spraying hairspray works surprisingly well [lol i know, sounds like a brilliant idea, spray hairspray in your eyes, its fun!] but it will make the makeup last a really long time without coming off or smearing.
omg this is amazing. i do drag and its so cool to see the other end of the spectrum! very cool! completely opposite of everything it takes to make me a fancy lady!
this vid has been pretty helpful and ill try and find some more of the things you used cus I always drag king for things like drag bingo and other stuff so this helps alot
It's trial and error. Stay away from the metallics because those look wierd, instead go for a more neutral brown, like a beige color. The idea is to accentuate shadows, so you want to blend a darker color into what is already there.
Keep in mind I did this in a course of about 10 minutes, usually I have about half an hour to make sure everything is blending in. You make an important point tho, definitely don't forget the neck. On stage or in dark areas its not as important, but in public it is.
fantastic thanks =] i can use this as a base (without the stubble...Eddie Feminate doesn't do stubble lol). I'd add black liquid liner as Eddie goes down the emo/scene route lol
Thank you so much for this video! I am starting to do drag again after 4 years of not doing it and really didn't want to do what some kings so of using the flesh latex and hair because I am alergic to latex. I came across your vid after searching for ways to get the facial hair effect without using the latex. I have a little over a month till my show and have tons of time to practice! Thanks again!
Thanks! This vid is incredibly helpful. the other drag king makeup vids on youtube don't actually explain what they are using or what they are doing or why. Being a butch lesbian, the makeup aisle has always been a foreign land of wonder and puzzlement to me. Thx for the help.
Wow, that was really helpful. I've kinged once and I did my own makeup... my only issues were the taping because I'm a larger woman and the fact that my drag mom could only do queen makeup. Though luckily I did well enough to fool a few friends but now I have some more things to try thanks to you. :)

your neck is too white for the outcome.

Thx for the help.

i had such a hard time finding anything on drag-kinging because everything on cross-dressing is aimed at guys. Thanks so much for posting this!

Wow, that was really helpful. I've kinged once and I did my own makeup... my only issues were the taping because I'm a larger woman and the fact that my drag mom could only do queen makeup. Though luckily I did well enough to fool a few friends but now I have some more things to try thanks to you. :)
