If you didnt adjust the actuator rod on the waste gate controller and it is stock, rule that out as well. Did you just put that air filter on? Open air filters make lots of noise.
Ya a diesel engine will not use the left over manifold pressure. It just blows back out the air filter when you let off, if a diesel engine used all of the manifold pressure after you let off you would get engine rev between shifts think about it. Your truck sounds fine. It does kind of sound like your waste gate isnt closed all the way, what kind of boost are you making?
Third, why do you have your wastegate wired shut? If you didn't know, Ford added a wastegate for a reason, and disabling it can lead to premature turbo failure. And also, your probably not gaining anything by running it closed, so its probably doing more damage than good.
Also, there's other things you have to do, besides wire the wastegate shut, to actually gain from it.
@ford302redneck Hi: When I said "effectively tied the waste gate shut with a Diesel Site waste gate controller" I should have explained further that the controller keeps the waste gate shut until 24psi then it opens enough to keep the pressure at 24psi no matter how much boost is being made. Since I was not exceeding 24psi boost all waste gate noises could be ruled out.
Second, the squwanking sound is the pressure that's built up being released cause its no longer needed. And is common sound, and is now noticeable because of the open element air filter.
@ford302redneck Hi again, There is no pressure being released. Pressure simply stops being made. The engine continues to spin and sucks air in and pushing air out the exhaust out over turbines. This make a noise that is commonly called compressor surge. I think that compressor surge is a misnomer since the air is decelerating not surging. The noise I heard did not start immediately after I installed the open air filter it started later and gradually increased.
Man, where I start? Do you even know what a turbo sounds like? A "hissing" sound when under throttle would probably be the normal sound a turbo makes producing boost. Notice when you let off the throttle, and the turbo is no longer working as hard so no sound.
@ford302redneck Hello yet again: When I installed a wicked wheel I noticed that the clamp connecting the turbo housing to the inter-cooler tube was loose. (I mentioned this in another response) I tightened it and the hissing that I was specifically talking about went away. The cameras that I used for this video do not have very good microphones and did not reproduce the compressor leak noise very well. The turbo still makes plenty of noise but they are normal noises.
Any hissing under load is a boost leak normally which by your notes you've found. Next time you have a problem like this i recommend the powerstroke org website lots of helpful people there. The squawk is the wastegate relieving the excess pressure in the exhaust housing because you let off the throttle.
@brainklean Hi thanks for the comment but the squawk is from compressor surge what ever that is. It is definitely not the waste gate because I have since effectively tied the waste gate shut with a Diesel Site waste gate controller and the turbo still squawks.
The sound I hear in your video is the noice from the wastegate blowing off boost. With a factory airbox you'll never hear it. Once you put on an open element you can hear all the neat sounds a turbo makes.
The "squawk" & "hissing" sound is perfectly normal. I see you have an aftermarket intake installed. The stock intake is designed to muffle those sounds so they are not audible. My 2001 7.3 Excursion makes the exact same sounds yours does, and has made them ever since I installed the aftermarket intake system. The "squawk" sound is the waste gate opening to release the boost from the turbo after letting off the accelerator. The "hissing" sound is the turbo/intake at lower engine RPM w/ high boost
This sounds like a waste gate accuator is plugged up. what its doing is either building boost too fast and blowing it off sooner than normal or else u have a bad spring in your accuator so it blows off sooner than it should. Since the leak doesn't sound to be continuous i don't think it would be your air to air cooler but that should also be checked for leaks. I've heard this only one before on an International 444E but they're basicly the same in design.
the turbos?? lol

That stretch of road you're on, is that off of I40? Cause my work was not far from there.

Because you have an open air cleaner...

Sounds like a bad ass blow off valve

do you have a boost guage? If you are making the correct boost i would not worry about it.
My 7.3 did this and so does my buddys
TuningFork426 9 months ago
Thats the dump valve for the turbo charger.
The excessive hissing under load maybe a slight pressure leak after the turbocharger prior to going into the intercooler.
This may not be specifically the noise you have - but it was my first thoughts from my own experience in diesels in the UK.

Back pressure off yer turbo. Its normal man. My 02 sounds loud as hell. Almost like a blowoff valve.

Haha damn you romp on that. my 7.3 rarely tops over 2000 rpm and never goes over 3000

@TWHolmes2573 Yes it is fun to put the hammer down every once in a while. The 4:11 gears keep the RPM's higher than normal.

the open element air cleaner is making a lot of that noise. Spot the shop truck is by far the noisiest truck I have ever driven.

Sounds like the waste gate is partially open. Check to make sure it is closing all the way.
