History can be ironic sometimes. If Soviet troops would have discovered Eva Brown alive and to whom she was related to, she would certainly have been gang raped and sodomized, just like numerous German woman and girls were during the Russian siege of Berlin. Her suicide by cyanide with Hitler spared her this brutal fate.

It would have been too much of a risk for them to try and escape - two of Hitler's biggest fears were being caught and imprisoned by the Allies/Russians, and having his body abused after death (like Mussolini's).

By committing suicide (which was considered honorable in such situations), Hitler died as a war hero, rather than having his memory tarnished by the humiliation of being caught by the enemy.

Gunsche died, in his eighties, in 2003. Kempka died in 1975. As for Miss Braun, Albert Speer said of this otherwise sweet, charming woman, she was "The only member of Hitler's entourage that did not deserve her doom." That could be also said to millions of civilians, the persecuted and Allied troops that were doomed by Nazism and World War II.

Just goes to show how much of history is based on a "best-guess" from available evidence. Although from the point of view of 2009 it's obvious that if Hitler and his mistress survived, we would have heard about it at this point.
