  • correct me if i'm wrong, but for the first turn, this will work, but just playing ring-around-the-rosie, wont give you enough movement to get any bonus cover save for movement. ie you measure the distance from start to finish, direct line, not what it took you to get where you went. the shortest path across a circle is a straight line.....

  • anyways 1) Land raiders by them selfs? Eh ... 2) Ram Use power of the machine spirt it still gets to shoot you can just Ram Past the Squad. And He dosnt just RAM the group Ram basicly states you name X Distance, Move like 6 + Inches away declare that as your distance you keep moving untell you hit that spot or hit something that didnt move away. These tactics should be re-looked at.

  • The simplest way to beat this would be to leave it alone. The land raider can kill one or two, but they are not that big of a problem. The rest of the army just goes about its business and takes the occasional potshot. Besides, once the 2nd eldar turn is over, they no longer have a coversave, making them much easier to kill.

  • actually you dont need to go fast to claim the 4+ coversave...

    from lascannon(right): two out of the three of the wipers is obscured. This gives the entire unit coversaves.(pg.64 in the BRB)

    same goes for the lascannon(left) and the assaultcannon.

    They will have more stuff to take them out. but hey! they lose 1-3 rounds of a 650-750p unit

  • Wraithguards are the ideal weapon against land raiders and terminators, put 2 squads of 5 with a warlock in a wave serpent and they'll tear the space marines ;-)

  • To hard to pull off. Rather have 2 vyper squads euqp. w/ lances that have been guided in 1st turn by ED. that a lotta pionts to tie up for 1 unit. keep a farseer near as a cover save on a JB squad. fort and guid as needed. E storm also to turn raider away if imbolized and any wep cant hit ya

  • I think the Land Raider only needs to destroy one of the Vipers to prevent the Eldar from achieving full coverage of all the exits. The following Space Marine turn he can simply turn or pivot the Land Raider on its axis to unblock one of the exits, which can then be used to dis-embark.

  • I'd never put out a land raider against eldar and not give it blessed hull...just puttin' that out there. I don't see why you wouldn't give it that upgrade against one of the two only armies that actually have lance weapons.

    But is there an easy way to get them off again? im affraid I'll destroy the landraider if I just pull... help needed! :S

  • Not the most amazing tactic I've ever heard of  but very interesting to consider. If my opponent is entirely unprepared for it then they'd get a little confused and wouldn't know what to do.

  • honestly if i had a land raider on the table and you surrounded it like that i wouldnt bother eating up the firepower from my other units just to take down the jetbikes yeah it would suck that you have my terminators locked into the vehicle that way but i would just basically let the land raider just fight its way out of that. the jetbikes arent strong enough to damage it and if they do then i get a free disembark anyway and pile in to crush the eldar of course teleporting them in is best

  • @metaltigeruk There is one of my battle reports vs. Brother Captain James' ultramarines where I pull this off on his land raider and it takes it out of the game for two turns so my jetbikes can escape- worked 100% perfectly

    Problem sir...

    Just getting 1-2 unit firing at them (including the LandRaider) may easily suffice to make enought room for the Terminators to get out or the LandRaider to move away.

    You don't destroy the menace, you just delay it by giving it 300pts minimum to frag.

    You should better invest in Fire dragons in a serpent or even sacrifice Swooping Hawk to that task...

    Would cost you less as Terminator on foot are sluggish compared to you (SainnHaimm)

  • You have thought this through but with some bad luck it will crumble easily. You say you want the focus to be on your vypers, that you will throw them away. Depending on your setup that can be 300-600 points being thrown away and in the end of it you have a delayed raider with X termies inside and your left with a chunk out of your army that could be spent better elsewhere. too much risk for the reward in my opinion.

  • i love the fact that it's not a tactic your opponant could prepare for. fantastic creative thinking! it's the set up and execution that requires both luck and skill. Now if most of your army is fast moving just destroy the land raider and avoid the assault marines. use viper squads with two brightlances and one shuriken cannon. guess which one takes the hit for the squad.

  • a good idea but you've used at least 2 fast attack with this and the marines could just take that combo twice or 3 times(using 1 elites and 1 heavy support each time) so you couldnt do that to all of them at once. You would need more tricks to take out the others. If you think of some, please could you make videos of them?

  • Yeah, but 6 Vypers w/ Starcannons (which is great against Marines in general as well) goes for 360 pts, the Land Raider alone is some 250+, and a full squad of assault terminators is something like 420+ points. If the opponent goes all out, well guess what? He's locked his entire list in three relatively slow, if powerful, units. The Eldar could do something like this with just jetbikes, voíla! Go for 12 jetbikes, that's 264 points and it'll give 'em 3+ cover saves from the turbo-boosting...

  • This worked much better in 4th, when a penetrating hit forced a disembark (would insta-kill all his troops), the problem with this here is, if one viper is destroyed, he can then do an emergency disembark (anywhere around the vehicle).

    I used to do this in 4th with gun drones and fire a single railgun shot into the landraider, my record was 600pts of HQ and termies killed by one shot :)

    Also, another good tactic for landraider + termies is of course fire-dragons in a wave serpent.

  • Haha, uncrackable you say? I have the worst luck everytime I field a land raider even having it in cover, I usually get it blown up turn 1-2....I dunno what im doing wrong but the rolls Kill it EVERYtime. I kinda took raiders out of my lists..

  • for the raider definitly, but, only the exarch can have some potent firepower on longer distances and once you cracked that badass Land Raider, you have to face the force from inside.

    Stormshield: 3+ saven even against melta/plasma is lame

  • Land raiders 260pts. Vipers are about 50pts Un Upgraded each right? I havn't seen them before. so im going on a Land speeder. This means that your down points, JUST trying to stop it moving. a MUCH better tactic would be to Dedicate a Squadron of War Walkers. Same stats. 6 strenth 8 shots at A12. thats going to do alot. on average. tats got to be atleast a penatrating hit. this would do more than your tactic, is more tacticaly flexable, and less points

  • A land raider is AV 14 all around, and an un-upgraded Vyper is 45 points. This isn't saying that you should only do this, and this is why you should take vypers, but simply something you CAN do, if theres no other option. It's called adaptation to a situation. It's best to have little tricks up your sleeve to always be prepared.

  • AND you forgot to add in the cost of how many termies and the Chaplain that's trapped inside the Landraider.

  • i thought there was a rule called 'emergency disembarkation' where even if you are surrounded by enemy units you could still disembark...

  • Eeeeeh... It's funny, for sure, but why go through all this trouble when you can drive-by with Fire Dragons in a WS / Falcon and zap it with however many Meltaguns? If anybody sinks over 500 pts into a single model, there is no such thing as overkill against it.

    Plus, you're screwed if that Land Raider happens to be a Crusader or a Redeemer. Both have the firepower to break out of this formation no problem.

  • A funnier variation is to do this to a bunch of Rhinos with Berserkers in them. Surround the access points so the Rhino has to move in order to legitimately disembark. Then, when the Rhino moves, the Berserkers either get out and are pretty much stuck, or they stay in and you rinse and repeat ad nauseum. (I showed a Necron guy how to do that with Scarabs last weekend.)

    Also remember that blocking the access points and blowing the tank does nothing. They just "emergency disembark" now. P 67.

  • the vypers/bikes stop the termies disembarking within 2" of the raider (models may not be withoin 1" of enamy models). last line - 'if even this disembarkation is impossible, they can't disemark.'

  • hell yes dude, its completely legal. the terminators cant deploy, you do get a cover save on the turn the vypers move, and the ramming really wont do anything. its genius, pure and simple. i dont know how long you can hold the land raider that way, but it will give you more time to wipe up the rest of his guys.

  • its too risky all those vypers held up. When they could just as easily fire and kill the raider at range and then move back killing the termis as they walk 6 inches. and in the process waste the time. the time you need to kill them as they aproach.

  • you cant load that many termis in a land raider they count as 2 troops so top number is 6 . now thats not so bad well yes its bad but killable

  • A good thing to do is add some Bright Lances on those vypers so that whilst they are still alive you can still try to pen. the Land raider.

  • Good idea. But what about Tank shocking? for example you do this i ram the squad. You do run the chance of being immobilized by the glancing str 4 hits on your sides any immos, you've lost vypers. With POTMS the land raider (given its a space marine one) will shoot at you with one lascannon. almost 90% + that it will hit and penetrate the chances of survival are 25% which is fairly good.

  • The only Big problem I can see is that its very exoensive, and that not alot of smart players would leave a Land Raider out in the open on its own. There is bound to be some form of support. Otherwise its a very smart idea on paper and in theory, Let me know how it works out for you.

  • good idea. but honestly, using bright lances to take it out (i run 4) then take the termies out with fusion blasters (there in a serpent). then theres about 4 or 3 left then assult with seer council.

    this is what i use against raider termi combo, seems to work for me.

    also if i dont agree that the seer council is bad in asssult with these guys, i meen there has been many a game where i lasted them out by locking them in combat

    the key is to not let them assult, and you assult 1st!

  • Just a question about the circling part: did you say that you could get the 4plus cover save due to high speeds while circling? If you did, that is false. In my rulebook, it says that you can't do the high speed save if you're circling or turning around, etc. (But if you didn't mean that...well, my space marines are screwed! XD)

  • Seems like a useful tactic to use, even if it is only useful for one turn.

  • If the Landraider tank shocks you and you pass your morale check the tank just goes right through like you weren't there.

    If you do a death or glory, then you have to have a weapon that will stun, immobolize, or kill it to stop it within your wagon wheel.

  • the tank shock only works on troops.... vypers are considered vehicles and thus stop the tank shock

  • AND I'm a skimmer so I can elect to get out of the way and the land raider stops in its tracks. So I have it boxed in, nowhere to go, if it tries to move then it still goes nowhere.

  • Won't happen- there are two squads infront- las cannons can only target 1 due to fire arch. That = 1 las and three heavy bolter shots. If they hit I then get a 4+ cover save from being a skimmer that moved fast. Won't take me down at all LOL! I do this kind of stuff all the time.

  • as much as I love your videos I must warn you that GW has in its FAQ a ruling on the conditions of "going Fast" for the 4+ cover.....and circling a landraider does not qualify......you only get the speed cover for moving 12"+ away from your start point.... this prevents players from moving 7" out and then 7", stopping exactly where they started and claiming a 4+.

    Also the LR can still turn in place to bring both LasC onto your Vypers, as much as I love the idea, it is not legal.

  • i like the idea but setitenut is right ... according to the rules this is not possible . though i would simply try to out run them as i have seen that your eldar army is always ( or almost always) comprised of fast moving troops .

  • Great idea, sure, it will eventually be defeated by lascannons and what not, but keeping it bogged down for a few turns whilst you take shots at it from lances etc.

    Think i may use this myself.

  • It's not a bad idea... but for the point value I think you are spending an awful lot to contain it. It is probably a fairly even trade, but still not giving you an overwhelming advantage.

    I would probably say it would be better to round up a handful of bikes with Warlocks in the squads and use their Witchblades to down the Landraider. Plus if you can manage to block all the exits when it goes you can take out the entire squad.

A number of guys at the local gaming club watch my stuff, whcih only makes my game stronger- I'm still beating them when they know what I am going to do- I'm countering their counter so to speak...

  • That's ok. My SOP is to always go second and then reserve everything- cuts down on 2 turns and then plan for the game to end on turn 5. I just need to stop the raider for a bit for my council to be unchallenged.

  • Not a bad idea. The biggest thing about this tactic that I don't like is having to spend the points on 6 Vypers just so they can hang out around a Land Raider. I realize that Land Raider+Termies is going to be more expensive than the Vypers so in the end you come out on top, but it still seems like close to 300 wasted points to me.

  • The tactic itself is deffinetly original and well thought out, but it all hinges on whether the space marine player is an idiot to be honest. When you've got something like a fire prism rushing toward your own lines, it's gunna be a bit noticeable. Though if the space marine player does realise the danger, you may very well get enough time to decimate his other forces so you can focus on the Land Raider. It seems very risky, but it is the only way i guess.

Can't do it with jetbikes since they can be tank shocked- vypers being a skimmer means I can just move out of the way stalling the raider. Yes my vyps are expensive, but it will allow my seer council to deal with the rest- I can take 30+ marines with them in 4 turns no problem.

  • you should defiantly try it,see how it plays out, do you have a house rule where people tell you wot they have in there transports, because having six vipers surrounding a empty land raider could cause you some problems later on in the game, again a very well thought out tactic.

  • Shooting will be negated by a turn of a 4+ cover save, any shots that get though I'll take on a side vyper since they are in a squadron. Won't tie up the raider for the entire game, but for a turn or two for my seer council to roll out...

  • i tried the tactic before the vid was out with my orks almost pulled it off but unfortunately it was a redeemer and i only managed to get 1 of the hevy flamers down but this tatic will work i knw it will and gd work fritz

  • for the cost of 6 Vypers with weapons, wouldnt it be more effecient to have FireDragons in a Serpent.......plus the Serpent can multi-task even after the Dragons get slaughted by the now footslogging Termis?

  • fair enough.... but I should warn him that GW's Errata states that the 4+ cover for going fast is measured from point to point,ie it forbids "going in circles" as a way to achive the 18"+........plus a stationary LR gets 2 LB shots and 3 HB shots.......for a potiential 2-3 Vypers shot down per turn....it was a good idea, but armor 10 circling 2 Lascannons is not very surviveable after turn 2... but thats just my 2 cents
