I live in Denver and I am dying to move up there. I hear the summers are amazing. I do have one question about the summers, what kind of thunderstorm activity do you get? I am assuming it's rare, but i keep reading how the area to the east of Fairbanks is the hail capital of AK. Do you get any good thunderstorms?
I've never really seen snow without it looking 'fake' as it does in movies; I've seen it once through webcam. But this video totally makes me want to see it in person now.
It is nice, and the people are nice too. The winters are long, cold and dark, but the summers are beautiful. If you can deal with -40 temperatures, come on up!
The first laying snow occurs in October (usually). From then until it melts in late April/May the ground is white. Our roads are plowed of course, but the landscape is snow-covered.
i know that fairbanks has ice fog quite alot. but is it a phenomenon that pretty much only happens in the fairbanks area?...or does it happen all over central alaska? just curious.
It can happen anywhere it gets so cold that condensation freezes mid-air, but I think it's more common in the interior where we have the sub-arctic temps of -50F.
It happens in low lying valleys like Fairbanks. It happens elsewhere to. Its caused by temp inversions. The same reason why LA gets smoggy. Here its just so cold everything freezes. Any moisture from everything it freezes and cannot evaporate
Oh man I moved to Texas from AK last year and I really miss the snow! I hate the 100 plus degree heat! I'm ready to go back to the cold! Thanks for the lovely reminder of beautiful Alaska.
We didn't get any more snow today, so we took advantage of the sunny weather and drove down to Delta Junction for some fishing. But it's supposed to snow again tomorrow or Thursday. It makes everything so pretty. :D

It must be a real race between raking up the leaves in the yard before the permanant snow comes that lasts till spring.
bjdon99 3 years ago
Most times, we don't even rake the leaves. :)

Thank you. Although we're getting a bit tired of it now. It snowed all day yesterday! We're hoping that now that it's May, we'll start green-up!

Yay! We're hoping for some tonight!
:)
Nice video. Thanks. Love the red plant.
