Tom Waits opened for them He got Boooed from the moment he sat down at his piano. I really felt bad for him but man...it was ZAPPA! I still feel bad every time I see Tom Waits. As far as the Zappa show, it really was completely unbelievable. Each person in the band was a one man show. They were just so great. Together, they were beyond great. There will never be anything to come close to it. The way I have come to explain it to people is: it was like an orgasm that actually kills you!
When I saw Frank Zappa and The Mothers in '73, Ruth was with them. She was fantastic. She could play a xylophone like no one I have ever seen since. I was right up at the stage and just watching her sling those mallets made me dizzy. She was hot too! Frank would chase her around with a Chinese fish wind sock thingie like it was snapping at her butt. It was a riot!
This music floats in my brain, the people that made it happen, best to you. FZ will be recognized as the most brilliant american composer of the 20th century. In Franks own words "Music is the best".
only frank could bring in ruth a covert percussionist witha doctors degree in percussion from the berkley school of music and jean luc ponty a an accomplished violinist and make a rock group
This just reaffirms my belief that Frank was... [and still is]... way ahead of the curve and that for all intents and purposes, sadly, Frank was right about the music industry... creativity is frowned upon... the main motivation is money and more money and making lots of money and profiting from all that money and making even more money on the money they've already made and did I mention the money?
I saw Ruth live with that incredible Roxy band. They did Village of the Sun and she was absolutely amazing. "What can I possibly do that will amaze everyone? I think she's come up with the answer just keep your eye on her."
I clearly remember Ruth and her brother Ian brilliantly performing with the Mothers. I'm surprised to see that she looks so beautifull after all these years...
A charismatic and beautiful WOMAN and one HELL of a musician! In the recent interview in the brilliant documentary about Overnight Sensations and Apostrophé+ LPs,she does a piece on the vibraphone, "first" time in thirty years, and says after the astonishing performance something like:"Ah, well.Three mistakes in there, that's one for each decennium[since she stopped playing]!"It's a big shame she stopped performing music, she was so good. The legend Terry Gibbs(see wikipedia)was her teacher.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what band or project Ruth should have involved herself with after her stint with Frank?
How about....
18 months with Bruford after a failed audition with UK. Has massive punch-up with Jeff Berlin - which she wins but is asked to leave.
Guests on Stomu Yamashta's comeback tour.
Fails audition for The Eagles but records and tours with Joe Walsh for the next 2 years.
Asked by Dale to join an all-female "Missing Persons" but declines.
Any ideas anyone?
