  • Is that the lady that called 911 dying"

  • R.I.P. Jim - Seemed like a great bloke...

  • I miss FZ

  • i like penis

  • I just Love Ruth Underwood!!!!!!!!!!

  • A true genius...the best vibe player I have ever seen...and easily one of the best musicians I have ever seen....she is unreal....

  • @chunter5100

I think Ed Mann was also a very good marimba player and percussionist

check the CD s of Zappa were he played on from 1977 to 1988

  • Best tribute ever. She is clearly as big a fan as we are, maybe bigger

  • Does anyone have a suggestion as to what band or project Ruth should have involved herself with after her stint with Frank?

    How about....

18 months with Bruford after a failed audition with UK. Has massive punch-up with Jeff Berlin - which she wins but is asked to leave.

Guests on Stomu Yamashta's comeback tour.

Fails audition for The Eagles but records and tours with Joe Walsh for the next 2 years.

Asked by Dale to join an all-female "Missing Persons" but declines.

    Any ideas anyone?

  • Love frank's raised-eyebrows -directed for sure at the suddenly tuneless howling emanating from Napoleon-Murphy-Brock's gob at around 8.00 !!!

  • Thank you Ruth.

  • I've got wood over Underwood.

  • She is a much missed talent....

  • "help me out ruth.." same millisecond she goes...oh my. How great were all these people

  • Help me out here Ruth! TWEEZER GLINT!!

  • she sounds so smart, im sure she would be a lovely person.

  • Does anyone know what the name of this documentary is and where the rest of it can be found?

  • Master Frank...it always sorprise me no matter how many time I watch him

  • Oslerian,

Tom Waits opened for them He got Boooed from the moment he sat down at his piano. I really felt bad for him but man...it was ZAPPA! I still feel bad every time I see Tom Waits. As far as the Zappa show, it really was completely unbelievable. Each person in the band was a one man show. They were just so great. Together, they were beyond great. There will never be anything to come close to it. The way I have come to explain it to people is: it was like an orgasm that actually kills you!

  • I know who the Turtles are, but who are the TOTTLES?

  • When I saw Frank Zappa and The Mothers in '73, Ruth was with them. She was fantastic. She could play a xylophone like no one I have ever seen since. I was right up at the stage and just watching her sling those mallets made me dizzy. She was hot too! Frank would chase her around with a Chinese fish wind sock thingie like it was snapping at her butt. It was a riot!

  • Do you realize how lucky you are to have seen that line-up? What else do you remember of the show?

  • Go to comments page.

  • What are "the taatles"?

  • Fla and Edda came from the Taatles. They did the song Sa Happa Togatha.

  • Oh! The Turtles! Thanks. That helps. And that would explain who Captain Beefhaaht is. :)

  • Thanks for your insight Ruth Underwood & I think your right about Frank as being a consummate encourager for the best you could offer.

Your contributions to Frank as a Mother of Invention so adds to my enjoyment of the performances!

  • Help, I'm a Rock and It Can't Happen Here blew me away back in 1968 when I was a mere lad of 15, wow, was it the Orange Sunshine or the music?

  • Ruth is simply the best ... I love this lady so much ... and her music.

  • I'd eat the corn outa her shit.

  • Ruth rocks!

  • get ruth in there with zpz

  • @anniegog If ZPZ and ZFT would stop giving Zappa alumni shit, maybe she would

  • so that forever and ever the composition would be stamped with the personality of the (unique) musicians that created it(!!!) -WOW.

  • i just learned son of mr green genes, i think im naming my next child zappa

  • son of mr green genes is one of the best songs ever written.

  • my cats name is 'zappa'! 15 years old now...got him a month after frank died.

  • Ruth Underwood is SO beautiful in so many ways!

    Thank you for being you!

  • ian underwoods a lucky bastard

  • This music floats in my brain, the people that made it happen, best to you. FZ will be recognized as the most brilliant american composer of the 20th century. In Franks own words "Music is the best".

  • Ahh, how my youth was influenced, lol.

  • so beautiful

  • only frank could bring in ruth a covert percussionist witha doctors degree in percussion from the berkley school of music and jean luc ponty a an accomplished violinist and make a rock group

  • Ruth was a Juliard graduate.

  • thats flo and eddie from the turtles at 4:27

  • Oh, Ruth. How I love you.

    You, too, Frank.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. What a beautiful woman, what an amazing talent.

  • Saw Dweezil's Zappa Plays Zappa band last night at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento California. What a fantastic show! go see them if you can!!

  • ruth is always ruth;thanks.

  • Oh thank you for posting this breath of fresh air....

  • DAnke DAnke Danke

a candle burns here for Franky!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wonderful; thank you so much.

  • This just reaffirms my belief that Frank was... [and still is]... way ahead of the curve and that for all intents and purposes, sadly, Frank was right about the music industry... creativity is frowned upon... the main motivation is money and more money and making lots of money and profiting from all that money and making even more money on the money they've already made and did I mention the money?

  • What did this come from? I'd definitely like to purchase this documentary!

  • god, how great everything would be if frank was still with us... but, his music lives forever

  • What's got into you, Suzi Creamcheese?

  • Great insight into FZ and the band..The whole DVD is excellent btw!

  • Ruth is hot!!!!!!! Looks great! Great musician! Thanks for posting this.

  • Frank Zappa's ideas and worldview were way ahead of his time.

    And they were right.

    RIP FZ, we miss you.

Good interview and video of Ruth Underwood.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Ruth is beautiful and intelligent.

  • Jimmy Carl Black died last week.

  • Ruth is the single best thing to happen for the Mothers and eclectic

    Rock n Roll, ever!

  • I should like to make out with Ruth. She's beautiful.

  • Ruth is now 62.

  • There's just something about her, where one just HAS to like her. And the talent she has, is incredidle.

  • Ruth's a hottie and a half ...

  • @CaptainBluebear08 ABSOLUTELY!! : )

  • @CaptainBluebear08 I hate the news thumbs thing! I meant to vote this comment up! Proudly!

  • Ruth is great.

    irreplaceable.

  • But she did in part break up one of my favourite Mothers line ups by leaving Ian for a roadie, leading to Ian being dismissed in 74 I think

  • i love this girl dudeS!!!! I REALLY REALLY LOVE! HEEER

  • ...Stravinsky...droning music going on for ages and then "Oh No!" breaking through the clouds...so beautiful...

I want to be at that show!

  • That's my ideal women , right there .

  • ha ha me too

  • I saw Ruth live with that incredible Roxy band. They did Village of the Sun and she was absolutely amazing. "What can I possibly do that will amaze everyone? I think she's come up with the answer just keep your eye on her."

  • Ruth is TITS!!!

  • I clearly remember Ruth and her brother Ian brilliantly performing with the Mothers. I'm surprised to see that she looks so beautifull after all these years...

  • Ian is her husband, not her brother. She was born Ruth Komanoff (something like that).

  • What city is that behind Ruth?

  • She should've gone on after Zappa, Frank would've wanted her to.

  • geeez ....the 90's and she still looks hot!

  • A charismatic and beautiful WOMAN and one HELL of a musician! In the recent interview in the brilliant documentary about Overnight Sensations and Apostrophé+ LPs,she does a piece on the vibraphone, "first" time in thirty years, and says after the astonishing performance something like:"Ah, well.Three mistakes in there, that's one for each decennium[since she stopped playing]!"It's a big shame she stopped performing music, she was so good. The legend Terry Gibbs(see wikipedia)was her teacher.

  • I ccnt belive all the FZ I am finding here...

I feel like I am 8 years old again.

  • And was Frank ever right about the musician and the stamp of the personality of the musician.

  • Ruth is awesome.

  • RUTH I LOVE YOU

  • I just love Ruthie

  • hot

  • She is seriously sexy... cause shes so talented...

  • RUTH

  • this is from an A&E Biography from ealy fall 1994--not the entire biography.

  • ARE YOU SURE?

  • Yes, but i got the date wrong. August 1995.

  • Probably A&E repackaged the BBC stuff. Not unusual. It has the A&E intro attached...

  • @geepee yes.

  • @Glyman11 the biography was a cheap repackaging of footage from the BBC piece.

  • God! This was supposed to be about RUTH...not a history of the band!!! MORE RUTH!! MORE RUTH!!

  • argh flo and eddie annoy me...

  • On Ruth, On Ruth...THAT'S RUTH!!

  • would be cool to see her on the Zappa Plays Zappa tour

  • Great interview. I saw the Mothers 6 times. She's right they were one of the tightest bands I ever saw On par with James Brown 1964- 72
