  • I thought I would see "Tempering in steel" with 'eardelete', hehe.

  • I thought it was performed very well given the complexity of the piece. I had the pleasure of playing this in 2004 and (at least for 4th chair clarinet) there were a lot of key changes; not to mention the piece was in 6/8 which switches from a 3/4 to a 2/4 every other measure. There were a few flat notes that I heard near the beginning, but that could be because of an improper warm up. I still have the sheet music.. I am going to see if I can still play this now. :D

  • This piece was part of a marching band show I did in high school. It was fun to hear it again in it's original form.

  • Ausgezeitnet ! Es is schwer zu spielen.

  • Ausgezeitnet ! Es is schwer zu spielen.

  • the composer was boring.

  • Italians know their music

  • marimba players sticking height was wayyyyy too high causing him to miss 40% of the notes -__- i had that problem last year in concertino for four percussion and wind ensemble but this year i am rocking the tempered steel marimba part!!!!

  • The part that sounds if'y is supossed to be like that. It is called a round, and the parts trade off from trumpet, to trombone, to trumpet, to tuba, to picalo. It is just crazy!!!! But freakishly fun!!!!

  • Met this composer yesterday.

  • I love the flute solo. C: It's simply divine. <3

  • I'm playing this in Wind Ensemble this semester, and we're playing some really difficult pieces (like Dance Movements...UGH. DEATH.). This is my favorite because it sounds great, and it's hard without being brutal. :)

  • That shimmering, interlocking percussion ostinato at 0:42 is one of my favorite moments in music ever

  • excellent performance of a very difficult piece. Congratulations!

  • we are playing this in band

  • love the marimba music in this piece, but the marimba was also fracktastic!

  • that first trumpet solo certainly was fracktastic lol

  • YEEESSSS!!!! Hard mallets on the marimba!!!

a lot of the vids for temp. steel have soft mallets for the marimba.

  • u just have to love the mallet percussion in this song XD especially that epic marimba playing startin at 1:31

  • i play that long bass clarinet solo

  • My favorite part of this song was the bass clarinet/ contra slow part.

  • ya were playin tis song at my high school and its just awsome and long

  • chuck norris

  • this is the longest song my high school band's playing at the spring concert. our director played an mp3 for us & we were like "this is so cool! but it's gonna be a lot of work!"

  • My high school band played this! The tuba part is so much fun!

  • How long have you been a judge for bands? What are your credentials?

  • actually ...im in middle school...and its my own opinion

  • Then maybe you should say that upfront instead of being a blowhard.

  • maybe u should learn how to take criticism

  • @justinbieberfabulous The fact that you are in middle school is the exact reason for you very disappointing opinion. Try playing this piece and maybe you'll understand how difficult it is.

  • @justinbieberfabulous Well, they're definitely up to tempo, so you can blame the length on the composer. And I thought the solos were awesome. I'm not sure you realize how difficult this piece is. We played it last year in the band I play in and it was notttt easy, by any means. It's somewhat rude to go around calling other peoples' work "sucky," especially when it clearly is not and when it required a lot of work to learn.

  • @iloverocknroll888 You can't blame him for his lack of understanding of the musical arts...look at his screen name

  • @justinbieberfabulous Just going to let you know, that the clarinets have everything BUT the melody for this entire piece. And in fact I hear them quite well.

Also, the difficulty for the trumpet solo is astronomical, and it trades off between the 1st and second part.

And the piece is not long. The best pieces of music are the longest ones.

    More substance to enjoy.

Not an argument, but rather a clarification of your opinion to enhance your enjoyment.

  • such an epic ending

  • ich mag deises Teil! Wir spielen es jetzt in meinem Band. Ich spiele das Xylophon. =D

  • Comment removed

  • idk, id have to argue that the sound of music arrangement is waay easier than this, but w/e

  • Comment removed

  • no, i mean that the sound of music arrangement that we're playing is easier than tempered steel...and so is stardust for that matter

  • close, but no cigar

  • yeah this was the second hardest song that my school's second band played last year.

  • same here. We played Armenian Dances along with it which was the harder of the two. But this was by far the best one ^_^

  • LOVE this song!. My middle school band is playing it

  • I LOVED PLAYING TENOR SAX FOR THIS SONG! it was such a fun and challenging piece but i agree it was so worth it in the end :D we played it for the band festival and got a superior, the judge said there was nothing we could improve on it :D IT WAS AMAZING!

  • I love this song. It's a definite challenge, but SO worth it.

  • great song. my high school band is performing this song.

  • I think this is one of the best pieces for band that I've ever played. We played it in Wisconsin State Honors Band 2004, and we even had the opportunity to meet and work with the composer. It really does seem to go faster playing than listening to it. Great piece!

  • Is it just me or when you are playing the song time seems to go a lot faster rather than when you're listening to it...it didnt feel like nine minutes when we played this

  • i played this last year. i had the euphonium solo (: great job! you guys sound great!

  • this song is the base for our marching show this year (2009). i have to admit, its pretty legit

  • My high school's 2nd Band played this piece for UIL. It certaintly wasn't that easy. And those trumpet solos were pretty hard as you can tell these guys sucked on them too lol

  • Grade 5 in Nevada .

  • tuba...can u play the veggietales them song?

  • My high school won the compitition at Six Flags over Georia with this song!!! I beleive it was 2005.... most of our band felt like we had just ran a marathon everytime we played it

  • Im in HIgh School and that was what we played for contest!! it was the hardest thing ever over 300 measures omg but we made straigh ones all the woot woot!!!!

  • If this song isn't already a marching show than someone should seriously write one.

  • We are actually doing it for our show this year! I can't wait!

  • it is. my marching band is doing it

  • our high school wind ensemble played it as perfectly as that! this is really a wonderful piece.

  • good performance....i played this my first semester in college...only difference is we played it 4x's that fast...and there was only like one person to a part so the whole thing was like one giant solo

    good job though

  • wow that must have been chalanging

  • it was....but i loved every moment of it

such a wonderful piece and a great challenge for musicians

  • This piece is really weird, for half the instruments you know 4 bars and you know the whole thing. The other half is random the entire time, I'm playing it now and we are actually doing it surprisingly

  • so today we sight read this in class, and it was soo much fun! we failed miserably, but still fun [:

  • I love this song! I just got back from my district band festival, and my friend's band played this song for us. It sounds amazing, and I love all the percussion parts for it!

  • cam's here too....GO KERR!!!

  • LOL i was about to say thats not the kerr band lol

  • In my high school, at the end of the year, the seniors get to pick their favorites songs, and our wind ensemble plays them for our last concert. This song is definate (: I can't wait for the clarinet solo!

Great performance, btw. I enjoyed it very much! I wish our wind ensemble could play as majestically. I think our woodwind section plays louder than our brass :/

  • you must have a pathetic brass section then

  • i just got back from playing this at contest and was amazed our band made 1!

i really thought we'd get a 2 but wwe didnt. we also made a 1 for sightreading.

  • Boy, do I miss that trombone solo...

  • lol, our band did this and the little percussion section was racing around on soooo many auxillary perccussion parts it was preety funny

  • I just played this in competition today! We got a gold and we were playing grade 6 music and whatever this grade is.

  • In North Carolina this was a grade 6 song so Im assuming it is elsewhere

  • grade 5 in texas

  • I love this. I played it three years ago at the State Honours Band.... that Oboe Solo still sends shivers up my spine. Love it all!!!! Isn't the sound of the Euph devine...

  • Sprechen sie deutch? Ich bin in Deutsch eins, und ich leibe Deutsch. Welch Leute bist du? Ich bin in die Bande. Auf wiedersehen!

  • I remember playing this in high school....I love that Tuba Part......

  • we're playing this in my wind ensemble. love it. (:

  • Great job!! Need more bass clarinet tho. :)

  • Agreed. As a bass clarinet player, I can say that my own school's wind ensemble needs more bass clarinet in it, too. I've yet to hear a piece posted here that has enough to have a decent low winds balance.

  • ok, so my band is doing this and we just scored an excellent at festival with grade 4 music. we gonna fail, y/n?

even though we were one point away from superior and we got a superior on sight reading

    whatever!

  • LOL holy shit, same here.

Happen to go to North Forsyth? lmao.

  • haha yeah, hey brandi!

  • Its too slow,

    But other than that,

    good.

  • this takes me back.. i was bangin on the chimes

  • we played it this year i love this song but the euphonium part is easy so it was boring for me but ya

  • next year were planning on playing this for our marching band show.

im a junior this year, and 1st chair, so next year ill still be 1st, and my closest competetion is graduating, so that euphonium solo is MINE!!!!!

  • what country are you from

  • we played this in marching band...it was crazy!! but amazing!!

  • we played this at uil contest one year and the lights went out. we kept playing and still got straight ones!

  • Ohhh that is the sweetest most epic music ever!!!!

  • I play timpani on this, I wish I had that kick-ass marimba part instead xD.

  • its so hard T T

    ahhaha

  • lol, it's got more action than the timpani though. Plus the melody is so mesmerizing O_O. xD

  • I played most of the percussive parts, only performed the xylophone one, they're all pretty interesting, it's much less about the action you get, and more about how you shine when you do get that action. Hell, even when I had the tambourine in this piece I did the best I could to just nail every note, even if they were rudimentary.

  • Did you practice the parts because of your band or just because you wanted to learn the parts? My bands just assigns one and that's all we get :(. Percussion is so fun to play though, so much variety~.

  • well, we had to be able to carry on without people, so we were all assigned our parts, I had xylophone, but I had lots of rests, so I picked up tambourine and maracas, since we only had one person on that part (it was crazy, needs at least 2), so I had to learn both of those, then the marimba player was out with the flu for a while, so I had to cover him (cause the woodwinds kinda had my part covered anyway), so I learned marimba too, but I wasn't that good at it.

  • How many percussionists do you have in your band? Our band has never had a problem with parts, if anything, there's always not enough parts for the percussionists. I'm pretty impressed that you could learn all those parts, all I knew were the timpani and suspended cymbal parts.

  • it was pretty good up till the trumpet/trombone solo. they were both just a little flat. and that split pitch ruined the effect :[

but this is far better than our band can play it.

    great job :]

  • This is a piece we're doing for heritage festival this year...it's gonna be a blast !

  • good luck, we did it in 2005, best piece I've ever played (especially as a percussionist... our parts were the coolest percussive parts I've seen!)

  • It was pretty good with exceptions toward the later part of the piece, after the flute solo. I'm also disappointed that the piccolo didn't take stuff as written or obviously did not play the dynamic it was supposed to.

Overall, awesome video of a cool piece.

  • I play percussion and this song is really hard T T

we sight read it today; I am envious of your skills xD

I can't wait until we can play as well as you did C:

  • Silly band kids. Us Strings kids are clearly better at just about everything.

  • @tristan01101 Getting laid is not one of those things. ;)

  • @cavudog hahaha true that

  • @tristan01101 yeah! rock on xD im in band but all my friends are in orchestra so =P

  • I play bass clarinet in my band. I love the low woodwind part :) can't wait til we play it faster

  • i play sax in a high school band in texas and we're playing this song. i love the eighth note pedal tone part

  • I play a trumpet and i love high notes and fast music and i can't even come close to describing how much fun i'm going to have with this song!!!

  • i wonder what this song sounds like in reverse.....

  • this music is amazing.

  • The tuba part fricken rocks!!! We are playing it this semester at the University I am attending!! Soooo sweet.... so much better than typical tuba parts!!!

  • Gosh Tempered Steel brings back so many memories. My high school's Honors Band, which I was in, played this for our UIL concert back in 2001. I loved playing it. The song is so full of life. :) Straight 1's baby! woot woot!...okay I'm done reminiscing. haha.

  • this music is so epic we just got this music today for ourr band haha we are going to wreck so much shopp the flute part is hard:)

  • Yep, but it's the shit though. I played the flute in high school. :)

  • my schools symphonic band is playing this

  • Colonial Forge HS Wind Ensemble played this one thier VMEA concert

Tenor sax guy memorized the eighth note thing actually the whole thing

  • only cuz we played it so much lol

  • I'm playing tenor sax on this song for Hochstein Youth Symphony. I'll have it memorized by the time of the concert.

  • HS All Orange County (the real one)!!! Cant wait!

  • Me too.

  • i would love to play that eighth note run at 1:30....one of my fav parts

  • Trust me, it's a cool lick, but I have to play it so many times that I'm sick of it. The tenor sax part is only sforzando holds and that eighth-note part.

  • To make this song a little less boring get trombone's parts & play that cuz those are one of the coolest parts in the song besides the eight notes. It bothers me that Mr. Young didn't give those parts to Tenor Sax also.

  • I loved that tenor line...

  • I played this a few years back...

Sounds like the trumpet screwed up during the brass quartet.

This is one of my favorites. The trombone part was a blast.

  • I'm doing this in my highschool band - I love it!

THe tenor sax part is a little boring and repetitave though...But I get to cover some bass clarinet stuff, so it's alright :)

  • it is repetitive, but it's so cool cuz normally low reeds don't have melodies like that but in my opinion it's pretty cool that tenor sax actually has something that's like the melody

  • Aww..I love this piece! Played it as a sophomore in high school!

  • The trumpet player during the a capella part could've have done a little bit better

  • Our percussion section won best percussion with this piece at the Midwest music contest, I'm a percussionist by the way.

  • Played this in highschool on trumpet. awesome piece

  • my university band is doing this.

i'm playing the tenor sax part.

it's hard man... i hate those eigth note runs at 1:30... and we're going a lot faster!

    really good job tho =D

  • my high school band played this song and i covered the gong part. it was all triple forte, so i had a lot of fun! too much fun, actually, according to my teacher :)

  • my drumline is playing this for our opener at pasic.

    it's gonna be sweet.

  • oh we got this the other day, and it's hard!!!!!!!!

  • I remember playing this in 2001-02 for high school and those solos aren't easy.

  • i thought it was a bit soft

  • AHH! i love the little solos with the flute clarinet and oboe!!! i love it!

  • im playing this song using smart music

    bass clarinet, contraalto,and contrabass.

this is actually a pretty hard song.

    i would rate it a 4.5 not a 4

(the song rating not this video)

this band is good 5 stars

  • I need to download this. Someone please help me

  • there are many prgs mate

  • i played this in high school. it was cool.

  • Fuck gib i dor glei

  • Ugh, it's going WAAAAAAAAY too slow. The director shouldn't have slowed down the tempo.

  • I agree. My band sight read this at about this tempo, mind you it wasn't great.

  • Lol, my band played it for their marching show this past year XD

  • well your band is stupid!!! it took our wind ensomble all year to get it at this tempo!!!

  • ha ha... awesome uniforms... good job on the song by the way

  • 2:59

HAHAHAAH! That's the part I played in high school, only I played all 3 trumpet solo parts in succession. That last note (A flat) is admittedly a little hard to hit, but that kid screwed up so bad. Embarrassing.

  • nice job on the oppening

    good job on solos

bass clarinet solo at 3:28???? 5:08???

    count the rests!

great low brass and trumpets good job band

  • Our band played this piece at band festival and our rival school STOOD UP and APPLAUDED.

  • OH MY GOD

  • FUCK!

  • huh?

  • sorry, but it was that good.

  • lol

  • love this piece its so amazing but i agree....odd uniforms.

  • You guys sound great, but god are your uniforms awful.

  • Eh. I have the first alto part on this, and I only have one page front and back. I noticed a lack of a double bar after a series of 68 measures of rest at the bottom of the back page. I asked my director and he said that it was supposed to end there and it was a typo. Listening to this recording, it goes much further than 2 pages. Does anybody know how many pages there are for the alto?

  • I will tell you as soon as possible...

  • trumpet 1 has 6 so i think alto has... 6-7 ??

  • yea pretty much cuz the cover's is counted as a page & I have have 6 pages including the cover

  • I agree with SixteenRainings. I'm trying out for the same band that he is on alto, and there seems to be a lack of music. How many measures are in this piece?

  • BlueOctane, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one that only got a front and back part. Does your copy of Molly on the Shore have soprano on the back of one page and tenor on the back of the other?

  • Yeah. It's all screwed up. Whoever put the packets together did not do a very good job. Where do you go to school?

  • I don't anounce that for everyone on Youtube, kinda foolish. I'll send you a Personal Message tho.

But yeah, the music is ridiculous this year. My band director was SO confused, haha.

  • i'm playing this as a freshman trumpet player at my high school. it is pretty hard considering I am playing on the 1st part

  • Used to play this back in the day when I was in the US... brings back a LOT of great memories. Damn...

  • this is one of those songs that will make you or break you. everyone knows this song and if you dont play it RIGHT, you suck! haha seriously....i hate when bands play it slow, it means THEY CANT DO IT!!!!

  • we marched this where i am from and we did soo good. this song makes everyone AMAZING..if u can play it

  • dude i played with this guy and he is a huge jerk

    good composer though

  • dogg shut the fuck up if yo hatin ass aint got nuthin 2 say then dont say nuthin damn yo weak ass think u the shit probably cant even play wit yo bitch ass damn I cant stand haters and was at the right tempo any faster and it would sound retarded

  • I see your maturity is at your height. By the way, our Wind Ensemble played this at a slightly faster tempo. I've heard more professional recordings that play faster. Also I'm not hating, I'm just pointing out some minor mistakes.

  • Also... This peace was played too slowly.
