  • he didint do it, the horse did.

  • @hacb1996 Yes but the horse wouldn't have done it without him either.

  • Most amazing Horse Race I've ever seen.

  • Mine That Bird makes it look like the other horses are running backwards. He is soooo fast, amazing!

  • This still makes the hair on my arms stand up EVERYTIME I watch it...A YEAR LATER!!

    Amazing

  • Seriously people. Stop trying to make excuses. The Kentucky derby doesn't have "weak" horses. It just so happens that Mine That Bird was better than all of them that day. Mine That Bird is an amazing horse, and his jockey was amazing too. And 40 or 19 lengths is a big difference, but it's still a long shot to come from the very back to win it.

  • 0:16 that's what she said

  • Track was sloppy sealed which usually leads to very fast times and the fiish time for this race was average. Reality is he beat a weak crop of 3 year olds, there was nothing amazing or spectacular about it. Put this horse against say a Smarty Jones or Barbaro or big Brown type and he'd have been closing for a well beaten 2nd place.

  • amazing jockey! i cant imagine how far and how tight he went to get the front position and of course nice horse too!

  • wow...

  • can't believe that pioneer of the nile didn't get taken down....

  • haha...ok ok, so everyone loves this american life. take me, ira. take me.

  • LOL, i paused it too! of all the Mind That Bird clips we could have clicked on, all the This American Life fans clicked on the same vid! great minds...

  • This American Life rules!

  • yup. this american life. i paused the opening story to watch this. incredible. now back to the losing football team. do they ever win? soon find out.

  • @ensurePlus1 hilarious. I just did the same thing. Paused the story (I'm a tad bit behind on my podcasts), came to check the video and am now a click away from getting back to my beloved Ira Glass!

  • @ensurePlus1 exact same at this exact moment.

  • Incredible, I love This American Life

  • Yes thanks to This American Life!

  • I watched this because of This American Life, too! (The episode is called "Long Shot")

  • This American Life!

  • your chick is a dud. nice race like that horse

  • coming from the back of the pack and winning the kentucky derby is not a fluke. awesome race.

is is just me or do alot of the horses who start at the back of the pack are the ones who win the race?lol.not all the time but sometimes.

  • A fluke horse? MTB has won before in stakes races which is a step up from claiming races. He is a good horse. He just hasn't had his day yet to win again. In Canada was a Champ 2 yr old. Also, he was second in the Preakness, third at the Belmont. At least he finished in the money. Lastly he doesn't take to Synthetics well prior his last two starts.

  • fluke or not, on that day, Calvin and MTB owned the field. Proud of you Calvin!!!!

  • man he can ride that damn horse was hauling some jockey ass, i live in kentucky and wait for this ever year!

  • that was incredible should of won all 3 got screwed

  • Did he shoot his horse up with a shot of nitros halfway though?

  • He came from more than 40 lengths back, how is it not special? That's more than 3 football fileds!

  • @109367 he did not come from 40 lengths back. The official DRF chart say his furthest distance back was 19 lengths. Also, I'm not sure how you translate 40 lengths into 3 football fields or 900 feet??? That would mean each horse length is 22 1/2 feet (900/40). The average thoroughbred is about 8 feet long, not a Godzilla like 22 1/2 feet. 19 lenths translates to about 152 feet (19x8). Stop sipping the Derby koolaide.

  • @ghostzapper2006

Well I heard it from somewhere, jesus christ, didn't mean to offend.

  • @grilledbatim I agree. Nothing special about jockey or horse.

  • wow that horse is quick...he was like behind the back and started accelerating

  • Cal Ripken Jr made a bet on Mine That Bird

  • Swab it!

  • HOLY SHIT!

  • Another hundred yards in the Preakness and we'd be talking about a possible Triple Crown winner.

  • In the Belmont 09 .Mine That Bird is gonna do his daddy "Birdstone" proud on the same track where his daddy showed his big heart.

  • I just love BIRDIE. He was made special!

  • If Rachel Alexandra ran in the Belmont..Mine That Bird would destroy her by at least 10 lengths! What a horse ..Mine That Bird is.! The end of the Preakness proved that.

  • Agreed, the Filly is a sprint horse but the Belmont is a marathon. That short track at Pimlico was ideal for her but there's a reason her camp didn't enter her in the other 2 races. They're not stupid. She'd stand no chance.

MTB would have destroyed her and all comers in the Preakness as well if he wasn't boxed in the entire race. By the time he zig-zagged his way out of traffic there wasn't quite enough track left to catch the Filly.

  • Thanks for agreeing. Great horses avoid no conditions that are not considered dangerous. They avoid no tracks, and no challengers. MTB's owners knew the layout may have provided difficulty but they entered him anyway. You are also so right. Traffic on the tighter track did him in.(Jockey error, I think?) Too bad he does not have aregular rider. Smith dad enough horse to go three wide and still pass her. Somehow Smith failed to negotiate the circumstances.

  • Can't wait for The Belmont!!

  • this was a really great video it was totally what i expected and i have to say that you met the standards of what i expected to see.

  • At least people can't say that was a fluke. He ran a good race in the Preakness - close second is still awesome.

  • WTF! Amazing animal!!!

  • The commentary is hilarious if you think dirty

  • that was a tight hole that he went through!

  • LOL

  • Awesome video. I do wish the overhead shot could have begun a few seconds earlier... but wow, this just makes it clear how much faster than the other horses he was running. Wow.

  • what a jockey, calvin borell has a 8th grade education but 2 ky derbys, a oaks and a breeders cup and id say one huge bank account

  • I didn't know that...He sure know how to race a horse!

  • And now Calvin just won the Preakness! Mine that Bird came in second.

  • It's too bad they didn't show the five seconds before this when Mine That Bird was in dead last and in full sprint. I keep looking at the other replay angle, and Mine That Bird had to have been a few lengths behind the next to last horse when they started to enter the last turn. I say this because he is going several times faster than and is just catching up to and passing the other trailers. The pass happens so quickly.

  • woohoo! I've been looking and looking for this view -- thanks so much, Markilauren! First Susan Boyle and now Mine that Bird with Calvin Borel. Thank You, Lord! Gives hope to those "little guys and gals" who are working hard every day w/o all the phony hype. I appreciate the integrity of M-Bird's trainer, Chip Woolley, too. When questioned by reporters who were guiding him to certain replies, he thoughtfully articulated the truth --plain and simple. Good man.

  • Your all welcome, it is my pleasure! I saw this overhead shot of the race somewhere and thought it was so impressive I had to look for it on YouTube. I couldn't believe it wasn't posted, so I went looking for it and found it to post myself. Enjoy!

  • impressive jockey moves and excellent response from the ride

  • Used this spectacular race as a metaphor to illustrate how to finish the year in middle school. I wish I had this video as my drawings did not do this accomplishment justice.

  • Thats how you know a horse truly loves what he is doing.

  • This is spectacular - thanks so much for posting it, I've been looking for it!

  • borel hit the turbo button

  • Thanks for posting this!

From last to first in the last quarter. It looks like all the other horses threw an anchor out.

  • That's a great perspective of the race. Not much room to get thru at :14, but they did and the rest is history.

  • absolutely incredible!

  • Thank you, I was hoping someone would post the overhead view. This horse had a lot of gas left after chillin out at the back of the pack the whole way, while everyone else used up the tank goin after the leaders. I knew Calvin would skim the rail again, so I bet on the horse in my tri, but not in first place..didn't think the horse was good enough for first. That was a $41K mistake on my part, because I had the other 2 finishers :(

  • woo im the first one to see!!!!!
