I would argue that this is almost a perfect performance. This, as many of you know, is the last recorded performance of Judy singing her signature song. And I hear so much love and emotion pour from her soul in this number. She knew this was the last time she would ever sing this song and judging by past recordings of the same tour the band did too. This was her "Swan Song" and she delivered it with sheer power.
i see pictures of judy and think what an amazing beautiful woman with talent!but then we all find out about her personal life...her drug addiction and i so stunned that this beautiful woman actually had problems like that let alone died from an accidental drug overdose!judy was a amazing woman and we all love you.she didnt deserve such a tragic death:(
Judy had LOTS of problems towards the end of her life- involving drugs, alcohol, men, personal finances, you name it. But when she COULD perform [even in this "less than perfect" performance], nobody could touch her. Like Billie Holiday, even when her voice was almost wasted away, the emotions and DRIVE to sing were still there....
The shooting of Oz was pretty demanding. The schedule was something like 5 am to 7pm. The doctors were giving Judy speed in the morning to stay awake and sleep pills to help her sleep at night. This caused her to get addicted and it went downhill from there. The studio and her mother exploited her until it was too late.
Even though her voice is so much different here from when she recorded the song, it's amazing! Was it the drugs and alcohol that gave her that rough tone?
that`ll makes me nearly crying. Judy you´ll always be in our hearts! And I hope that we`ll meet us in the sky. Miss you till this moment and Thank you so much for your work in film and music (Specially Wizzard of Oz ;-) )
@MrKingsRow Not all biographies are completely right in fact this one said she's never really loved anyone not even her own children except for herself on a good night. She obviously loved her children and alot of her friends who've always been there for her
i find it so hard to believe that judy died about 10wks after this performance, she was the absolute best, then and now,a true legend, people say she lost her voice towards the end,as if !!! well this performance says it all,all she needed was someone to take care of her and love her,she worked her arse of 45 out of her 47 short yrs, such a shame, wish she was about today so i could have met her,i love you judy, i hope your at peace, god knows you deserve to be,sleep tight angel <3<3<3 xx
it's no secret that she took Benzedrin(an amfetamin)to keep up with the tempo and Seconal(a barbiturate) to slow down, sleep and get ready for the next day!
A very sad story. Someone who spent her life searching for love and happiness and never finding it except in her children and even that was not enough.
She would be 89 now. She could very well still be alive. Such a shame, and such a waste. Wonderful, timeless talent. You know though she was much better off. :(
she died like so many stars have and substance abuse didn't help. She Was used and abused by so many so called friends. When she did the Wizrd of Oz they gave her sleeping pills at night and speed in the day. If you watch her face in that movie you can tell something isnt right. The only true loyal friends she had was the Gay community. What a huge loss I still cry when I hear her sing.
@turtle2087 ..real freinds in the Gay community? Sorry not true. What about The Gays that lied to her and married Judy? Yes I am Gay so don't try that respond. The Gays used and abused her back then also.Maybe not now but DEFENITELY back then.Read more about her and the GAYS .You'll find out the truth.Take Care!
No matter what, I will always remember Judy as she was....a beautiful spirit. A spirit that was torn....yes. But, due to the exploitation of people she thought to be her protectors. She gave us a gift, and if you didnt believe that.....well I am guessing from the obvious.............you would have never came here. Judy....you have nothing but my love, repsect and absolute admiration!!!
In answer to the above, I believe Judy was working since a child, and pushed and worked all her early life performing beyond exhaustion (like some of these young pop idols). Then the uppers to keep her going led to downers to sleep, not too uncommon in today's world. Many performers are people pleasers who have to keep going-As far as the suicide attempts, maybe due to the drugs and alcohol. She was a great talent.
Can someone please explain to me exactly why Judy had began to grow so loony in her final years? I read she tried to kill herself numerous times, married many men, and eventually overdosed. What caused her to begin doing this to herself? She was so beautiful. Definately the most beautiful celebrity in history, next to Marilyn Monroe, of course. <3
@TheAlxxHydeShow...it's a lot to try and explain in a small paragraph...Judy had a very troubled life...mostly stemming from a drug addiction, that she was never able to kick...in the days Judy started taking the drugs...they were "medicine" to help her lose weight...to put her to sleep when she was wound up...and to wake her up...when she was too groggy...it was the start of something that caused her many problems...and that she was never able to kick...
@MrKingsRow The person above is correct. The drug addiction began because managers and such told her when she was young (12ish) that she needed to lose weight. It was the adults in her life who were prescribing her meds which developed a dependence from which she never escaped.
@TheAlxxHydeShow ...Don't mean to be rude but have you been living under a ROCK? It's been well documented that as a child star the studio machine dosed her with barbituates for weight loss, energy, etc. turning her into an addict. Add the insecurities & self loathing often associated with enormous talent, coupled with a dysfunctional family, what more explanation do you require? Maybe a hammer hitting you over the head? One thing you DO understand. Judy was a great talent.
@TheAlxxHydeShow Her story is really a tragedy.... She was such an amazing talent with so much to offer at such a young age... but because of Hollywood's pressure to be thin (even back in the 30's), she got addicted to those pills that eventually led to her death. Everytime she sings this, it's like she is looking back to when she was young, wishing things could have been different, and she manifested all those thoughts and wishes into the song. Why can we have more Judy's in this world?
@TheAlxxHydeShow I thnk that unstead their nice voice these singrers are abused by differents compagny to make money and more mony.. always think taht i am better in my situation than a popular one in life because tey have all they want but cant do things taht they would like to do like we do . none boder us about giving all we have.. the liberty .
@TheAlxxHydeShow Unfor from the begining of her career Judy had many problems the Studio who sighned her as a child was feeding her Diet pills they said she was to fat this continued for many years she was only a little girl when she started her life was a tough one its so sad she was so talented but she could not stop the pills and the booze she is now in heaven with all yhe other angels may the Great Judy Garlnd rest in peace thank you Judy you may be gone but not forgotten
I'll take a stab at this.....let's see her Mother got her hooked on pills and USED her as a meal ticket, she was groped and fondled by Louie B. Mayer when she was still in her teens, her husbands cheated on her, her manager screwed her over financially to the point where she didn't have enough money to feed herself and her kids and she was expected to perform and act like a star everywhere she went after all of this constant giving of herself practically her whole entire life.
@TheAlxxHydeShow There's more to her life then drug abuse. She had a really hard life. She was told she was ugly all the time. MGM would make her wear a fake nose, a corset to hide her figure, starve her because she was too "fat," and they made her wear the blue plaid pattern on her dorothy dress to hide her curves. Her whole life people treated her horrible. Her parents pressured her. Back then drugs surfaced and she began to take drugs to help with the pain and struggle she dealt with.
@chelseyrosex judys life was not tragic, the people around her were tragic, stealing money and jewllery from her, makes me sick how people think they can help them selfs with her hard earned money
@TheAlxxHydeShow...I got to thinking about what I said...and I should have also said...that Judy had many, many happy, good times also...and she had a wonderful sense of humor...and had more talent in her pinky finger...than many could ever hope to have...and was all heart...but she also had many bumps along lifes highway...but it wasn't all tragic and bad...I guess is what I'm trying to say...and should have said in the first place... :)
@TheAlxxHydeShow Well MGM started her on the drugs and when someone is on drugs for such a long period of time, they become dependent on them and that's what happened to Judy.
Well it was recorded she died of self overdose on barbituates but after her death, doctors found cirrhosis in the liver which would have killed her soon anyway. She died so young, it's so sad.
This video never fails to make me cry my heart out - such a beautiful song and beautiful person. My inspiration and a truly wonderful person. R.I.P Judy Garland x
I love Judy, always have, always will. I miss Judy. No one could touch my heart like her. Some come close. But Judy Garland will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for posting this. A fan always.
This makes me sad and teary-eyed. I am 36 yrs old and I really appreciate how different the songs and movies and actors from way back.. Thanks to my mom who introduced me to the classics when I was young. They are really special. Hope they have a video of this.
This was better than I thought it was going to be. Her voice quality was really touch-and-go toward the end of her life. I am glad it was in pretty good condition for a final recording of "Over the Rainbow". Thanks for posting this!
@CocoAfrodite...oddly enough...I don't believe there is...a documentary was being filmed during Judy's last concert tour...which this is from...but in the film footage that exists...you hear this audio from Copenhagen...but you see her performing in Sweden(I believe it was)...so actually...no there is not film footage that exists of this perfomance...that I know of. (the film was very poorly, and cheaply done...it was supposed to be called A Day In The Life of Judy Garland.)
Gorgeous singing. There are subtle differences every time she sings this song.. whether it is her phrasing, dynamics or how long or short she held out a note, this is one of her finest. Her voice was always beautiful and full of emotion. She was one of the greatest entertainers who ever lived.......
Which is the one where she is painted like a clown and sings "over the..." and wipes tears from her face as she sat on the corner of a stage? I saw it once on tv and have been looking for it for decades....
Oh......such a nice pc of song where I watched an animated show where the little mouse could"nt find it way home. And surprising to see the date of the Original singer Judy Garland born on 10 June 1922 and tis morning is also 10 June 2011. Many precious memories to this song, thank you respectful Mdm Judy, believe you are resting in peace in heaven. Thank you! once again!!!!
@sandrafenton...yes, Judy just had her 47th birthday not too long before she passed away...but she is 46 years old in this recording...recorded March 25... :)
Judy Garland's mother and bosses may have taken away hear wealth and her confidence. Her husbands that she did have may have cared more about her wealth, than her.
But the one thing none of them could ever take away from her, was her spirit! That's what kept Judy going, even through the darkest days of her life, until the end.
Judy will forever be a legend unmatched by any future talented singers out there.
omg, I've listened to this 3 times tonight and can't help but crying each time. I was devastated, at the age of 12, when I heard she died. I've even done a piece of art with a polaroid of me taken right after I heard the news that she had died. I asked my uncle to shoot it because I knew it was a milestone in my young life. Thank you for posting this.
@ragemanchoo82...Hi...it's from a CD I have of Judy's last concert...it's kind of rare...I believe it is out of print now...it was for sale years ago...thanks for commenting...glad you enjoyed it! :)
this is why i love judy garland, somewhere over the rainbow is her song, no on can sing it as perfect as she can! well done judy, we all love and miss you:(
She dedicated her last performance of Over The Rainbow to the Danes :) I live in Denmark, and I'm gonna go to Copenhagen in two weeks. The hotel Judy stayed at while she was in Copenhagen is called Hotel Kong Frederik, and I'm gonna visit that hotel in two weeks! I'm gonna stand in a room that Judy has been in!! I'm so excited :D I bet I'm gonna have an out of body experience ;P
Judy was incredible, her voice will live forever in our hearts <3
@ninskimig123...Hi...thank you for your great comment...I am fascinated with things like that...I've always wanted to visit places where Judy has lived...performed...I've always wondered if the concert hall and hotel were still standing in Copenhagen...there is a pic of Judy in the hotel in this video...she is sitting on a couch...and there are more pics of Judy in the hotel in the book Judy Garland by Anne Edwards...have fun! Glad you enjoyed the video and Judy! :))
@MrKingsRow well, the Hotel is definetely still standing :) and is one of the more luxurious hotels of Copenhagen :D Although there has been some changes in the Hotel since Judy visited :(
I don't know about the concert hall, since I don't know where she performed. Do you know?
@ninskimig123 I felt the same way when I visited the the house where Judy Passed away in London on 4 Cadogan Lane. Back in jan 1st 2001. It felt magnetic to be just outside the flat where Judy was last alive and died. It felt as though Judy could walk out any momentthat is how strong her energy felt. It may sound silly but it was a feeling I wont forget.
@ninskimig123...actually Judy dedicated her performance to the "audience" in general...Judy was an Entertainer that had a Love Affair with her audience like no other Entertainer that has ever lived...Judy had the utmost respect for her "audience," they loved her...and she loved them. :)
@MrKingsRow haha okay :D You know, when I walked into that room where Judy had been, I was totally like 'ooooooh myyyyyy gooooood...' and just walking around like I was in a trance :) people were staring weirdly at me...
@ninskimig123...I would have been the same as you...lol...I'm so glad it is still standing...and that they let fans visit the room where Judy stayed when she was in Copenhagen! :)

Tony Bennet was recently quoted as saying Nikki Yanofsky has the nicest voice he has heard since Judy Garland... I agree...... common world check her out !.. and her version(s) of this classic tune... you will not be dissapointed
Judy was one of a kind..I loved her as a kid and love her now..She was taken advantage of most of her life..Shame on the studios that used her with no remorse.Judy RIP many of us loved you..
This makes me intensely sad. The world chewed up Judy Garland and spit her out. I have loved her so my entire life and know there will never be anyone even remotely as talented as she was.
Sitting here with the hair on my arms & back of my neck standing up, knowing, because I am gifted/cursed with perfect pitch, that I am hearing more than that; an undefinable "something" that I know means greatness. I was 4 when Ms. Garland died. I remember one thing as clearly as if it only happened yesterday; my mother crying when she heard the news. It comforts me knowing that even so close to her death, she never lost that undefinable "something"; a kind of greatness that is truly a gift.
Poor Judy. Not only one of a kind talent, actor and singer but special lady. She worked so hard and was never paid much, given drugs on the set as a little girl to enable work and sleep on demand only to die in a rundown area pretty much in poverty. She wanted to be rich for peace of mind from all the hard work and she deserved to be rich. I wish her dream could have come true in that lifetime. She watches over all of us today and smiles with love.
I'm sure I'm repeating myself here but repetition is for emphasis: Considering the time-line and how ill she was this is wonderful -- not to mention impressive and heartlifting. There are distinct signs of quality left in her voice. A magnificent talent that never dies. Thank You.
Not bad (few notes sounded as good as the ole days) considering she was no more than 90 lbs and 3 months from leaving us forever (physically). Judy would have been 88 today. RIP Frances Gumm-thank you for all you've given!
@dianamaryflorence I know if she was still living i probably wouldn't be crying but when i hear the song and think off how she died and what she wwent throught it is sad.
Hi Sal...see I knew you commented on one of my Judy videos...so I just came and looked again...give me a couple days...I will be back in touch...thanks! John :)
Thank you for doing a video to this performance. It's nice to hear her sounding so strong at that point in her life. As always great pictures, I see you snuck my boyfriend Yul in there again haha! I like the sunset at the end too. Gawjus just like you!
Thanks Matt for your nice words...I'm glad you enjoyed this one...Judy did do a very good job at this concert, considering all she had going against her at the time...Judy always gave 110% and then some...Yep, Yul for you...have a good weekend! :D

every time i listen to this song, it's like im back at age 5, and singing along with my mother.... why do such amazing people have to be abused?
marina123232 7 months ago
isn't there a video version of this performance??? <3
CocoAfrodite 7 months ago
@CocoAfrodite...oddly enough...I don't believe there is...a documentary was being filmed during Judy's last concert tour...which this is from...but in the film footage that exists...you hear this audio from Copenhagen...but you see her performing in Sweden(I believe it was)...so actually...no there is not film footage that exists of this perfomance...that I know of. (the film was very poorly, and cheaply done...it was supposed to be called A Day In The Life of Judy Garland.)

my god, is it just me, or does it make everyones stomach drop at the fact how much her voice was damaged, and still manages to give chills?

Thank you! once again!!!!

judyross28 8 months ago
@111Nikki222...Judy's 46 years old...almost 47...she was born June 10, 1922...she passed away June 22, 1969.

@MrKingsRow
actually cuz she was born June 10, and passed on the 22nd, that would make her just having her 47th birthday
sandrafenton 3 months ago
@sandrafenton...yes, Judy just had her 47th birthday not too long before she passed away...but she is 46 years old in this recording...recorded March 25... :)

Judy Garland's mother and bosses may have taken away hear wealth and her confidence. Her husbands that she did have may have cared more about her wealth, than her.
But the one thing none of them could ever take away from her, was her spirit! That's what kept Judy going, even through the darkest days of her life, until the end.
Judy will forever be a legend unmatched by any future talented singers out there.

So much talent to carry in such a tiny body, how she managed to stand I'll never know.

omg, I've listened to this 3 times tonight and can't help but crying each time. I was devastated, at the age of 12, when I heard she died. I've even done a piece of art with a polaroid of me taken right after I heard the news that she had died. I asked my uncle to shoot it because I knew it was a milestone in my young life. Thank you for posting this.

MrKingsRow 1 year ago

NFitalianGuy 1 year ago
@ninskimig123...actually Judy dedicated her performance to the "audience" in general...Judy was an Entertainer that had a Love Affair with her audience like no other Entertainer that has ever lived...Judy had the utmost respect for her "audience," they loved her...and she loved them. :)

@MrKingsRow I know that, I'm just kinda WOO HOO because her last performance was in Denmark :)

This makes me intensely sad. The world chewed up Judy Garland and spit her out. I have loved her so my entire life and know there will never be anyone even remotely as talented as she was.
japhyryder66 1 year ago
Sitting here with the hair on my arms & back of my neck standing up, knowing, because I am gifted/cursed with perfect pitch, that I am hearing more than that; an undefinable "something" that I know means greatness. I was 4 when Ms. Garland died. I remember one thing as clearly as if it only happened yesterday; my mother crying when she heard the news. It comforts me knowing that even so close to her death, she never lost that undefinable "something"; a kind of greatness that is truly a gift.
LadySunner 1 year ago 3
@LadySunner Beautiful comment about the great Garland.

Montavanni 1 year ago
I'm sure I'm repeating myself here but repetition is for emphasis: Considering the time-line and how ill she was this is wonderful -- not to mention impressive and heartlifting. There are distinct signs of quality left in her voice. A magnificent talent that never dies. Thank You.
Montavanni 1 year ago
Not bad (few notes sounded as good as the ole days) considering she was no more than 90 lbs and 3 months from leaving us forever (physically). Judy would have been 88 today. RIP Frances Gumm-thank you for all you've given!
