I find that the best practice is to never save files to the virtual machine but to the host. In that way one can use time machine to backup ones files and have them logically placed in the mac file structure. Exclude the virtual machine in time machine setup so that time machine doesnt back up the virtual machine all the time, cos this takes a long time. I keep a virtual machine snapshot of my installed programs and a manual backup of this snapshot. Everything is smooth and secure..
