  • Not to offend in any way but is some of this rotoscoped? The animation was that amazing

  • the dancing bit on the white background remind me of an Apple commercial, anyone else think they got the idea from this short?

  • Mind blowing, and being an animator myself I can appreciate the amount of work that was put into this, chapeau!

  • Wonderful animation!

The dancing portion kind of reminds me of an old animation (80s or early 90s) that had a couple dancing and constantly transforming into various different characters (mostly characters from preexisting sources).

  • thats the best thing ive seen.so technically simple but such an optical expierience

  • I think i'm lucky 'cause I saw it at the Clermont-Ferrand Short movie festival. When the movie finished, i immediatly understood that was something great.

  • I so wanna be this amazing someday, someday.

  • How long did the production take for you?

  • holy mother of god....5.57 D: !!! all seconds wth !

  • You are a fantastic animator. Post this on newgrounds

  • Beautiful

  • The piece is superb...

with the power of animation alone he's given us the truth that our minds can go beyond our own physical forms and expand further through thought, even to the point of shapes and colors. this is so touching it destroys you. his father is proud wherever he is

  • wooow

  • zxcvbnmasdfghjklqweertyuiopzxczzziopqwertyuiopzxcvbnmzxcvbnmzxcvbnmzxcvbnmzxcvbnmzxcvvbnmzxcxcvbnm

  • Masterful.

  • i wonder how many frames have this video xD

  • :P Well, generally, a second of film or animation consists of 24 frames. So there's about 7 minutes worth of animation.

    60x24x7 = 10,080 frames, it would seem

  • You'r close but its not right. a second in a film is 24 fps but in animation is 12, each one is duplicated. But i know, Its a LOT of them and this short is awesome, and not only for the time spent to made it ;)

  • Oh! Haha, you're right. I forgot. Although my arithmetic stands true still. Tee hee. :P

But yeah, that's one bit I forgot about. I think that's how it is with all film, though. The film is shot in 24 frames per second, but every 2 frames are the same. I believe that's how it works.

    :P

  • usually the frequency of frames in full animation is 24 fps (done on ones especially when the motion is fast like this)

    .

  • @rankbra actually you animate on ones when you want smooth slow motions. the less frames you animate the faster the movement seems.

and to further clarify for others, traditionally animation was done at 24 fps, as in film. but today most animated shows run at 30 fps.

also many hi-def videogames double that to 60 fps which would be absolutely ridiculous to animate without the help of 3d programs

  • i was speaking about frames per second, for example one second is always one second no matter if its on 12 fps or 24 fps, if you have lot of things going in short fragment of time you do everything on ones (24 fps) on contrary if you have slow action you can do it on twos without doing inbetweens

Normal spacing is on twos and far spacing is on ones.

  • i think we're both right, we just arent understanding each other lol

  • hundreds. usually 24 to 26 frames a second.

  • ....

  • omg that was funny at 3:23

    so beautiful!

  • pure genius... fantastic!

  • Genial...

  • beautiful

  • this might be the most beautiful animation i have ever seen in my life

  • Superbe animation et un très bel hommage. Bravo.

  • that was so beautiful. Truly a masterpiece and an inspiration to all animators in its own right. So inspiring

  • this is creepy

  • wow how would you make something like this im assuming not flash lol but that was amazing

  • Like Omen:)

  • This is kind of wierd.

  • Amazing!!! Loved and actually blown over by the content. I consider myself lucky that I could see this in my lifetime....

  • AhAmazing

  • vraiment impressionnant!

  • but... but... how?

  • Mathieu Labaye you are a genius. simple, yet original idea, that emotionally and visually packs a punch!

  • great animation....english translation?

  • Translation Part1:

I think that it's through movement that we can take over our own life, it's through the freedom of coming and going, having gestures, gestures of love, tenderness, anger. When you are deprived of movement, like I am, like many other people are, I think that if we want to survive, we need to re-invent movement some other ways. What's going on in my head is not purely cerebral, it's not purely intellectual, it's a way to recreate an internal space which is my freedom.

  • Translation Part2:

When you have a severe handicap, when you live totally immobile and dependent, you live something that you can't share. Something you can't easily express, something you can't easily talk about. When 2 people are talking, in order to understand each other, they need mutual experiences between them. They need to talk about something for which they each have some form of experience.

  • Translation Part3:

Immobility and handicap, tend to make you slowly realize and accept that there's a certain number of things you can't do. But on the other hand, I also believe that it allows you to open to other possibilities, like internal freedom, internal space but also your encounter with other people. I think that in the handicap and this illness, there is actually a big potential.

  • Human beings are extremely resourceful, in their desires, their energy, internal forces and those are thinga we may discover with more urgency, with more forces when we are deprived of movement.

  • Fantastic

  • Very, very nice! impressive.

You don't know me, but maybe I'll meet you at Clermont-ferrand filmfest. Ciao Johann

  • very fantastic

  • WTF. . . the best animation . . . but not normal :D

  • 3:54 , if you want to skip the intro

  • Je ne m'en lasse pas! (Encore) bravo à toi Mathieu!

    F. CHAPEAU

  • wow, thank you very very much for the post

  • Felicitations pour le prix media10-10!

  • WOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • WOW!! simply brilliant animation. is it just me or the first animations and the sound effects with the different people moving attached to the strings resemble the computer game broken sword?? did the guy who made this had something to do with the game? 5 stars video!!

  • This was beautiful: the monologue and the animation. Just wonderful.

  • fantastic!!!

    i know what's art now!!!!

  • this must've taken FOREVER to plan out and animate. Holy crap.

  • OMG!!!!! It's amazing!!!! One of the best animations I've ever seen in my entire life!

    Good job!

  • now THAT is animation

  • soo...I won't be able to sleep anymore, knowing that animation this amazing exists in the world

  • La vache...:o Woaah !!

  • Now THAT is animation.

  • Now THAT is animation.

  • Art is arty is artsy is cv is life, but not. The central feature of any successful deep ms-ers's life is to say, with no self-induction of guilt, "Fuck off, blissful bipeds, each and every one. I love you." A dark and admirable fury resides beneath, powering it all. Alas, I saw little of this, here. Imagistic blather at the end.

  • what?

  • Dood.... what are you smoking eh?

  • Très touchant...effet vidéos somptueux, just amazing...

Vraiment.

  • unfortunately i can't understand french, but the animation itself was absolutely hypnotic, well done. 5 stars!

  • Hey - check the column on the right for a translation!

  • thank you, i can't believe i hadn't thought of that, heh.

  • One of the most Brilliant Animation concepts ive ever had a pleasure to watch. As if my life has just changed a small degree.

  • what the fuck??

  • now we did it. Animation is not confined anymore to mere entertainment, or education, or research, but has come to its highest meaning now... Animation can heal. Or more accurately, through animation, humanity can heal itself. Thank you for breaking the ice on this and open a new road for us man.

  • Merci

  • Beautiful, and inspiring. Merci, Mathieu!

  • ...speechless animator here.

  • Impresionante!

  • This thing is Godly. Godly I tells ya.

  • The most beutiful piece of animation I've seen to date... I'm speachless.

  • I think within the handicap, within the disease, there's a lot of potentiality. The human being is inexhaustible when it comes to energy, to inner strength. Ans it's something you discover with maybe more urge, more intensity, when you're deprived of movement."

  • [7:18 - 8:28]

"Sure, the stillness, the handicap, brings you to the conclusion and to the gradual acceptance that there's a certain number of things that you can't do. But conversely I think it opens a whole bunch of new possibilities, notably with inner freedom, inner space, but also with the way you can come in contact, in relation with others.

  • [2:42 - 3:15]

"When you live a severe handicap, when you live absolutely still, dependent, you live something that you can't actually share, that can't be easily expressed, which you can't easily talk about. Because when two people talk to each other, so as to understand each other, they need to have a minimum of common experience between them, to speak of something they both know from some form of experience.

  • [0:43 - 1:23]

"I think it's by the movement you appropriate your own life. By the freedom to come and go, to have gestures of love, tenderness, anger, whatever. When you are deprived of movements, as I am and as a lot of other people are, I think if you want to survive, you must reinvent the movement differently. And so what happens inside my head isn't purely brain, purely intellectual. It's a way of recreating an inner space which is also my freedom."

  • Wonderful!

  • That was like....The best thing I've ever seen.

  • that might just be one of the coolest animated pieces ive ever seen. well done le french dude.

  • this must be the coolest thing I've ever seen. I wish I could understand it though

  • Can someone Translate to English?

  • He is basically talking about how when you're handicapped you are deprived of physical movement, so you have to develop your own "inner" movement.

  • If there wass anything out there that makes me feel like a lazy animator....it's this

  • Take THAT Pixar and Disney!

Hand drawn 2D animation will NEVER lose its appeal
