as an A- player on iCCup, id say the game is very balanced, more so than starcraft 2, definitely. the problem is your occasional map hackers, but hose are thankfully not a problem in public tournies :3

I like SC2, but it's sad that a lot of new-age gamers won't appreciate the beauty of SC:BW just because "it's old, has bad graphics and is outdated"..

the claim that BW is balanced is essentially necessary to make to view the game as a serious e-sport. and people do make it, but the reality is that data does not back it up. zerg and terran are close (and maps usually decide it), but protoss is far underpowered.

that said, the imbalance is not nearly as blatant as in SC2, so player skill can overpower it.

@ColonelVolkov Warcraft 1 and Warcraft 2 achieve some "balance" because everyone is playing mostly identical units against each other. Over the years, however, it's been mostly agreed that Warcraft 2's Orcs are more powerful due to their spells.

I cannot emphasize enough how wrong this is.. Starcraft fans who have been around since the beginning would agree that all races have their strengths and weaknesses, so there are zerg FAVORED maps, protoss FAVORED maps, and terran FAVORED maps. If you think that the map pool is always and has always been perfectly balanced, then you are simply wrong. And starcraft is balanced only as far as the map pool is balanced.
