@Boom2ickle I'd save that more for the end game. That way she can use it for a really long time. Trance boosts your magic but it's for limited time depending on how much Magic Points/Ability Points whatever you acquired with Terra in the active party. In World of Balance the Intangir is the best thing to fight for Magic Points. Also Relm's sketch can help you get Lores for Strago if you know what to use it on. Like say Sketch Intangir for Step Mine/Traveler.
I remember reading that the original Japanese version had Kefka repeating some insult several times, similarly to how he repeats "hate" in this version. So maybe it's not entirely Woolsey's "fault"...
I understand that Atma was the way the translator stepped around Ultima, but I have to say, it makes more sense and is more clever than Ultima. It's a shortening of Atman, which means Soul, Universal Soul, or the principle of life.
Bailly, you lucky so-and-so, I have no idea how you managed to avoid Atma doing his super-ultra-extra-mega-explodity-DOOM attack a.k.a. FLARE STAR on your party. It looks cool - Atma's little cogwheels spin while he's doing this - but oh my it will sting if the algorithm doesn't like you.
It never likes me. I always get demised and end up scrambling for cure spells!
In the Japanese version, when Kefka is kicking the emperor around at the end, he says "Now how's about a nice, painful fall to the Earth below for your death?"
I had forgotten how much I absolutely adored Shadow. Though his sprite always seemed a bit off to me. Looks like he's wearing sunglasses and a bandana. Looks more like a biker than a ninja. Still amazing though.
I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE AHTE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE you line is SO much better than Kefka saying "bitch" 16 times. It is just more iconic!
Man, this guy is ALOT harder in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. Same creature, but alot more difficult. I did beat him though, after like a thousand tries.
I prefer "Feeble creatures, DIE!" and "Beings of flesh, your time is nigh." over "Feeble creatures, GO!" Nintendo of America censorship for the loss...
Yeah. I actually prefer the PS1 version despite the butchered music, if only because some of the censorship is removed (pubs are pubs, Siren and Starlet aren't so covered up, etc.). I don't care about references to booze or booty so much as I just dislike censorship, really.
Now if they'd only had the sense to uncensor some of the dialogue. Lines like the "leap of faith" line are still there, and Woolsey's pathetic attempt to censor Shadow's suicide...
@VShalak Maybe it's 'cause I'm famillar with Pokemon, but Atma saying "Feeble creatures, GO!" makes it sound like he's summoning someone to attack you or something, which of course he's not - that line confused the hell out of me...
The beginning of one of -the- two big scenes in FFVI... (the other is the opera, naturally). Thinking about Dissidia, Kefka's seventeen-HATEs line made it into the game, as did "You'll be well done!" (only the second one is voiced, though...), and Kefka's full-3D look and voice match "insane asylum reject" too well... he even has sproingy springs in his jumps.
But anyway, at least one of his loss quotes is a shorter variation of "I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate HATE YOU!"
Also, I think he says You'll be well done! in a three way splitting fire attack?
Yeah, I bumped into "I hate hate hate hate HATE you!" while putting Kefka through the Duel Coliseum... he truly is a "Mad Mage", when one of his cutscene quotes refers to meaningless destruction as the only fun form of destruction. He also quoted several endgame FFVI lines when I faced off with him as Terra in Shade Impulse... a voice-acted FFVI would have him stealing not just each scene, but the whole game with this awesome portrayal.
Awesome boss music. Really. And I think all those hates were necessary. Remember, Kefkas a madman. I can see his face get angrier and angrier with each hate, along with starting to shake and maybe even get high pitched.
Weird how Kefka just gets up like nothing happened from getting stabbed...
From the dialogue (at least in the Advance version) it seems that Kefka planned to rule the world with the emperor, but when the emperor didn't go along with his plan, he decided to kill Gestahl.
I think it would have been more dastardly had he planned the betrayal from the beginning, but maybe I'm just misunderstanding the dialogue.
I think Kefka had no intention of letting Gestahl live. I think once the madness of his magic infusion took over, he used Gestahl for his own ends. Kefka knew the emperor would lead him to great power and it sounds like Kefka also knew about the Goddess Statues way beforehand too. That's just imho after playing both SNES and GBA versions.
So when Atma says "Feeble Creature GO!" he is talking to the good guys? (Hence "Go" = "Die") I never understood that line, I thought he was talking to someone his side (i.e. He was summoning them, hence the "GO!", which confused me as no one ever appeared...)
I did already, when I got the airship. Perhaps you missed it, because I didn't show the Mobliz side of the letters, and only the girlfriend's side of it.
Yea I know, Stil a really good ending, I was in Mexico for 5 days so I really got backtracked and missed the ending when it came out, oh well, off to watch Final Fantasy 7!!!
And for those new to FFVI and never saw its rendition of Mind Blast, it hits 4 random characters with a status effect. That means it could hit the entire party, it could hit 3 characters but one of those characters gets hit twice, or it could even hit one character 4 times. Not the nastiest of the status-inflicting attacks (there's a certain other status-inflicting attack that's like Bad Breath on steroids), but it has a wider range of potential status effects it can cause.
and because hes a weapon he needs magic so use (i cant remember which one it was but i know its one of these 2) rasp or osmose to drain mp once mp is gone poof so is he
Oh no! Kefka pushed the statues out of alignment! What are we ever going to do? Shadow bought us some time (alright, Shadow!!!), but time for what? If the statues unleash their power, there's nowhere to run or hide. We're doomed! Doomed!
Also, my spider sense is tingling. I sense the ultimate HCBailly cliffhanger coming up in the next episode.
Except it IS Ultima Weapon. If I'm not mistaken, either in Final Fantasy 8 or 10 (haven't played either), Ultima Weapon says something like "Don't call me Atma!"
A little bit more FFVI Japanese. The word Woolsey translates as "go" this time around is "kiesaru" (in the imperative form of "kiesare!"). It derives from "kieru" (to disappear) and "saru" (to go away). Together, it's something like "to fade away", but can be used for anything from getting out of someone's face to actually dying.
But yeah, in context, I would have probably used something like "die". Square was paranoid of the NoA content police...
Ultima Weapon's boss music..it makes you stand up and pay attention; gets your heart and mind racing..makes you think "This is a big battle!" So awesome.
I think it's even more dramatic if Locke is the one Celes is standing over, sword in hand, at her crossroads. She makes the 'right' choice, but at what cost? (Well, Kefka was likely planning on killing the Emperor and taking the statues' power all along; getting stabbed by Celes just put it into motion earlier than he had anticipated.)
Well you did give them plenty of time to get there first. If you recall when continent first arose and the world was under the threat of iminate doom you so rightly thought this would be the best time for sidequests and blue magic learning.
HcBailly. Why you don't use the reflect trick? You know that when whole party has reflect status, just cast all targeti spell to them and it bounces to boss. doubles the damage of spell with party of 4. Or do you think it as a cheating?
It deals the same damage for me. I would think that the split damage and multiple castings end up canceling each other out, because that's what it looks like.
In any case, I will need to do that in the next episode.
I guess that's a fitting end for Gestahl, although I really wanted to _personally_ hand him his ass on a platter in battle, which would have killed him.
How can the out-of-balance statues unleash power that destroys the world, but yet doesn't harm anyone on the continent itself who are right there with the statues?
Any plans on showing what happens if you 'rush' through this part as opposed to being patient at the end, HCBaily? In my many playthroughs of this, I don't think I've ever seen the 'rush' variant at the end.
In the japanese version kefka didn't spew hate in that scene. He was like dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit, you bitch! Yes, kefka is a very foul mothed clown.
From what I've heard, in the original Japanese version(or at least the fan translation), instead of Kefka saying hate over and over again, he just calls her a bitch several times.
Not exactly. The exact word used is "chikushou". This is literally an uncomplimentary word for "animals" (kinda like "dumb beasts"), but it's used more often as a general curse word rather than to refer to anyone or anything in particular. MasterGouken's "dammit dammit [etc.]" seems to work pretty well, I'd say.
I've decided to increase it to once per month, or whenever I feel like. I'm not against swearing at all. I was just raised in an environment where those words weren't used very often.
"What makes you think a clown wants to be worshipped?"
But HC...clowns are funny and can make you laugh...I would worship Kefka (*whispering* Help! I've been taken hostage by Kefka...Please get me out of here...) Come on HC...Join the Kefka Side (*whispering* Get me out of here...I want to be with the Returners) Kefka is awsome (*Whispering* Help...)
This is about as far as I got in the game, I beat atma once, then had to turn off before the end of the talking sequence, I was never able to beat him again and eventually just gave up.
Maybe he casted silence on you and you did not know, because he himself had silence casted on him.

AtmaWeapon doesn't necessarily need to be an abbreviation for UltimaWeapon, though. It could refer to "Atma", which is the indian word for "Soul".
That would also fit with the whole "dying when MP reaches zero"-weakness, since magic obviiously is a very spiritual thing.

Or do you think it as a cheating?
kalasnikovi 2 years ago
It deals the same damage for me. I would think that the split damage and multiple castings end up canceling each other out, because that's what it looks like.
In any case, I will need to do that in the next episode.

I honestly didn't see that Star Wars audio clip coming but great use of it made me chuckle.

Good job catching the reference!

Abhor is one of my favorite words!!! :P
09:20 Perfect! I don't know why I didn't see that coming.

I guess that's a fitting end for Gestahl, although I really wanted to _personally_ hand him his ass on a platter in battle, which would have killed him.

Star Wars clip ftw! This part of the game kinda freaked me out the first time(especially what happens after).

How can the out-of-balance statues unleash power that destroys the world, but yet doesn't harm anyone on the continent itself who are right there with the statues?
speyeker 2 years ago
I think it's because in mythology gods and goddesses govern the world, or something.
ShadowTheHedgehog423 2 years ago
Actually nvm; Kefka somehow has control over them, that's why.
ShadowTheHedgehog423 2 years ago
I dunno, I suppose there's a difference between 'destroying the world' versus 'sucking the life out of it'.
TrueSoreThumb 2 years ago
at least this time there's a perfectly reason for them being load bearing :P

Any plans on showing what happens if you 'rush' through this part as opposed to being patient at the end, HCBaily? In my many playthroughs of this, I don't think I've ever seen the 'rush' variant at the end.
aravilsianodel 2 years ago
In the japanese version kefka didn't spew hate in that scene. He was like dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit, dammit, you bitch! Yes, kefka is a very foul mothed clown.

"I Got the Blues!" caught me off guard and made me laugh out loud really hard.! haha : )
HC is always on Wolsy's case. Haha .. classic rivalry.
Seriously though.. Classic gaming scene. I can't wait to see what happens next.

From what I've heard, in the original Japanese version(or at least the fan translation), instead of Kefka saying hate over and over again, he just calls her a bitch several times.
PsychoKrazyTime 2 years ago
Not exactly. The exact word used is "chikushou". This is literally an uncomplimentary word for "animals" (kinda like "dumb beasts"), but it's used more often as a general curse word rather than to refer to anyone or anything in particular. MasterGouken's "dammit dammit [etc.]" seems to work pretty well, I'd say.

There goes the one swear per LP...
lob31 2 years ago 3
I've decided to increase it to once per month, or whenever I feel like. I'm not against swearing at all. I was just raised in an environment where those words weren't used very often.

They're vastly more effective when used only at the right moments. TV Tropes calls it the "Precision F Strike".
Toksyuryel 2 years ago 2
Don't you even MENTION TV Tropes! I manage to find like two dozen new tropes to read every time I stumble onto that blasted time devourer!

Isn't it more efficient to kill Ultimate Weapon by draining its MP?
dfr343 2 years ago
It is, but that is really better for Low level runs, because it doesn't trigger his second phase attacks he gets when low on HP...
Xenav14 2 years ago
5000 MP / 200 MP per round from Rasp = 25 rounds of combat.
24000 HP / 2000 damage per round = 12 rounds of combat.
Of course, those numbers aren't exact, but the point is that it's far easier to deal close to 2000 damage per round drain more MP per round.

Quite easy to make it all the way to the end, with all the treasures, and still have to wait three more minutes. I'd say he's got the time >.>

Cool boss music + title. And you fight fast with battle against atma weapon.
Kefka... unbalancing the statues... NO WAY! Shadow's appearance is too late... the statues are already unbalanced.
stranger0213 2 years ago
This is about as far as I got in the game, I beat atma once, then had to turn off before the end of the talking sequence, I was never able to beat him again and eventually just gave up.
