@Steelpicker Barbara , his wife was my Grandmother & her daughter Debbie or Deborah in my mother . She played with Willie Nelsons children on Willies farm . Of course this was when he played for Willie Nelson .
Bill, Just want to say THANK YOU for all your efforts in preserving the True Greats of Steel...and something to be cherished forever. I have a question for you, that I'm hoping you can answer....I was looking elsewhere on Youtube and come across Buddy Charlton playing next to Billy Cooper...WHY, don't we hear more of Billy...he has got to be Thee SMOOTHEST & Cleanest Steel player I've ever heard...why is he So "obscure" ?? Has he ever played with any "notables"? Thank You.
You are welcome about the video's. I have been very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time to get involved with the great steel guitar shows.
About Billy Cooper. I do not know anything about him other that what I have seen on YouTube. Sorry, Bill
@Steelpicker Hi Bill, Thank You so much for taking time to reply to my message..I appreciate it. I've done some more "digging" on the net since I first wrote to you, and Billy Cooper seems to be very close friends with Daryl Jernigan(presently) & and with Buddy Emmons (in their early years, at least)...and was also, with Buddy C. and Jeff Newman among others. Apparently he played with Bobbe Helms years back, at the time that Jingle Bell Rock was recorded. He resides in Orange,VA. and owns....
I'm Charlie's son and what is weird is my wife's maiden names is Day. When he first met her he made sure to tell her that Jimmy Day was the steel guitarist on Pick Me Up on Your Way Down
@charltonwalker Hi Charlton. I never got to meet your dad, even though he was absolutely one of my favorite singers. I get to play many of his songs in our dance band. I was good friends with Jimmy Day and also Larry Sassser who played on the re-cut of Pick Me Up. We have worked many steel shows together.
One of the most memorable highlights of my life was playing music with Jimmy in high school for several years and seeing him again at Roswell N.M with Willie in the 1960's. Our class of 1951 remembered him at a recent reunion. I miss him and think about him many times with pride for who he was.
I had the privilege of Jimmy being in Ray Prices Cherokee Cowboys when we booked him at the Ocean Opry back in the 1980's. A thrill to get to mix house sound for both shows. I'll never forget it.
Jimmy Day's resume as far as I know. Ray PRice, Webb Pierce, Hank Williams, Red Sovine, Jim Reeves, Lefty Frizzell, Elvis Presley, E.T., Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, Ferlin Husky, George Jones, Sammy Smith, Leon Russell, Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth, Big Daddy Don Walser, & Skeeter Davis.
I'm sure there are more but These I know to be acurate. Wow, what a resume.
I loved all this steel playing. You don't here much of this anymore. I went to a Martina McBride concert last summer and she had a real good steel man when she was singing some of the songs from her timeless album. Bill

Thanks,
