The most intricate to me is the fact ,that Bola is almost unknown in his native Brazil.Allmost everybody knows who is Luiz Bonfa,Baden Powel or Laurindo Almeida.but most of them never heard about Bola.I think It should be corrected asap, cause Bola is great as any of them !
@TheLittledog2 actually Bonfa and Laurindo are not very well known here in Brazil as well. What could explain this fact is that they built solid careers living in the US and other countries. Baden Powell and Raphael Rabello, on the other hand, lived in Brazil for most of their live and therefore are more widely known here.
Bola was truly guitar genius.I am lucky to have a several of his albums on cd,but the most beautiful parts are his solo recordings, where he mixed a different genry and styles ( samba, brailian folk,
I am extremely fortunate to have seen Bola in Monterey, CA in the '60's and it is something I have never forgotten. It was truly like watching someone make love to the guitar. Just hearing this brought tears to my eyes...he was such a fantastic artist! Thank You!
@optimusdime Wrong Bola was like Charlie Parker who got a mouthful while taxing from one gig to the other, don't forget these guys lived four lives in One, and the chicks lay at their feet, this guy had charisma,he just had to send out an erotic signal and they came running in.
One of the reasons I vibe with Santana is because of his deep and varied musical influences. He was man enough and humble enough to introduce us all to this otherworldly player: Bola Sete.
Not all of us found out about Bola Sete from Santana.Carlos always talks of Bola,Wes,Miles,Trane Peter Green etc.All fantastic people,so where did Carlos go wrong? He doesn't share any of thier traits.Dan
Cheap shot, veeshead. Like Santana or not, he has a distinctive tone and feel. Carlos is not an Al Dimeola virtuoso but he's far from run of the mill.
It's not a cheap shot.He mentioned himself alongside Mike Stern and John Scofield in Guitar Player magazine recently.I agree that you can tell it's him by one or two notes. That's a characteristic most people don't have.I still feel like the only thing he's concerned with is HIM and his long meandering solos. He can't stand to wait for his turn to solo.He just plinks away at a few notes until HE can solo.Dan
You Tube is a wonderful place. At last I can see Bola. One time I tried to find out more about him and the only music still being sold was an old cassette. Santana has a video that features some of his stuff. Amazing stuff. DOes anyone have any records or transcriptions?
I'm Brazilian and until so far I have only heard a small piece of music by Bola 7. I did not know even how he looked like. I'm amazed. What a great guitar player and jazzman!! He looks happy, enjoying his talent...
Bola Sete è um dos grandes gênios do violão brasileiro.
Descanse em paz!

Bola was truly guitar genius.I am lucky to have a several of his albums on cd,but the most beautiful parts are his solo recordings, where he mixed a different genry and styles ( samba, brailian folk,
fado,classic, american jazz &folk,
flamenco etc.) to make his own vision.

Vince G. on keys, right? I love is awesome style. He was like Steely Dan of the sixties. He took jazz to the masses, with his Charlie Brown stuff!

I think he meant that Bola probably spent so much time learning the instrument that he wouldn't have had time to mess with girls.
Although I'm sure Bola got a lot of poon in his time
