I'm never going to learn this ever :(...I don't have the hands or coordination for solos at all....So I watch this video once in a while to see this awesome guy do it like it's nothing lol
Wow! Amazing is all I can say. I had already written this solo (my favorite ever) off as impossible to play, but you have inspired me to take the time to try and learn it
@Guitaristcj84 If you take it bit by bit, you can get it. There's a program called Amazing Slow Downer, which is great for transcribing. It's the best program I've come across so far. Way better than a two speed tape recorder, lol. I'm going to try to post some kind of lesson on this, one of these days. Good luck!
I think u had a lot of soul in this performance. Great tone, skill and delivery. This solo actually sounds better without the wah wah. It was awesome how u covered the brass instruments.
I've given up trying to learn this, life is too short and I'm too old. I always thought this was the best all time solo. Do you remember or know how many hours you put into learning this? Very impressive again, well done.
@siberianspring Hadn't really thought about it. Many hours over a few years. This solo has been on my 'to do' list for a long time. I always try to break things down measure by measure, or note by note if need be. I learn each phrase slowly until I get it under my hands. . There is a certain amount of technique needed for this one. I think if you have your Am pentatonics down, that would be a good start. First thing is get something to slow it down, and try to take it measure by measure
once again.....great performance......i'm envious...not enough time to work on it....job, family...etc. thanks for letting me live vicariously through you, mate....keep on groovin'.....
Awesome bro. Only 4,500 views is a disservice to the quality of this video. It's one thing to learn to play this which is inconceivable to me but I can't even imagine the creative mind that, well, created it.
@siberianspring Thank you so much. I wonder sometimes where this great inspiration in the late 60's and 70's came from, and why it seems to have vanished.
Man I have been grooving to that solo for 30 years easily and (think I) know every note and nuance of it, and I have never seen it done so perfectly (IMHO). Thanks man for putting it on YouTube. Now if I could only make it happen on my strat instead of my air guitar, I'd be able to die in peace :-)
REALLY REALLY GREAT!!!!!!! TERRY WAS AND IS MY FAVORITE...YOU REALLY DID HIM PROUD!!!!! THANKS...NOW I CAN WATCH YOUR VIDEO AND TRY TO IMITATE YOU!!! ANY IDEAS ON WHERE TO GET THAT BACKING TRACK? THANKS!
@sdsck Thanks so much! I made the backing track. All you need is a vocal canceler. It will cancel out the lead guitar as well. They're all over the net.
Absolutely cracking mate! I've not heard this before, but I might try and have a listen to Chicago now. I'd like to hear you do "for the love of God" by Steve Vai, if it's something you're interested in. (I know he's not everyone's cup of tea). Keep it up.
Such a great selection. You really have no idea how intricate that guitar part is in that song until you here it with the levels up over the horns melody.
I can tell that you don't own a Jonas Bros. cd.
I suggest some Stevie Ray Vaughn for your next vid. In my eyes, he is only second to Sir Hendrix.
It's a great tribute to be able to approximate some of Terry's playing. Imagine the mind of the man who not only played it, but also was able to create it, mostly spur-of-the-moment. Kath's brilliance as a singer, guitarist, and writer was really unparalleled in his day, and remains remarkable more than 30 years after his untimely death.
I started messing around when I was about 10, then I got more serious when I was about 16, playing in all kinds of bands. I still play as much as I can, just because I enjoy it so much. So I guess I've had over 30 years of practice.
o 30 years plus.. im working on the solo at the moment.. ive been playing on and off for about a year and half. im 16. not doing so well with the solo really.. kinda doubting myself if i will ever get it down. how long did this take you?
This is kind of a tough solo. I learned it years ago. I'd probably spent weeks or months transcribing it, (on and off) and then getting it up to speed. Are you using something to slow it down? The Tascam MP-GT1 is a great piece. You can loop the section you are working on and slow it down. I know there is computer programs that will do it as well. A cheap portable cassette recorder is good to have also. Play the section you're working on, and listen back to it.
i know its a pain to tab stuff out when people ask guitarists to... but this is a work of art. and the tabs on this are seriously not 100% right. i can tell, even though i cant play this solo. would you by any chance be willing to share your very rare knowledge of how to play this solo??! seriously... not a lot of people play this. this solo is ridiculousss hard, and im a fairly decent player. would you please possible tab it out and send it to me, or post it here, or on ultimate-guitar?
OMG iam tottaly speechless i want to know everything you know lol iam just blown away i just cant even think straight anymore you turned my ideas of music upside down bro best i have ever seen on youtube deffinitly
I know how you feel man. I've been playing a long time, and ever since I watched gatner1 cover Jan Akkerman's solos in Hocus Pocus, I can't get it out of my mind. I can't figure out yet whether I'm totally inspired or I want to throw my guitar out the window!! LOL jk. Keep up the good work inspiring us to keep working on it!
excellent! if i were to nitpik though i wish you would have used a tone more like the one terry used - much cleaner. the distortion kinda ruined it for me. but awesome job none the less.
Yes, Terry had the most awesome tone, especially on this tune. Nice rounded tone. He was using Les Pauls and SGs at this period, I believe. I plugged my strat into a marshall on this one.

its sound different from the original solo but it's a GREAT cover!
I'm 18 and I'm trying so hard to play this, To me Terry Kath put such a lot of soul & emotion in this playing, only few guitarist are able to.
