Varna is not the same a caste practice, it explains the mode of society in the Purusha Sukta and never is explicitly hereditry even to the point of the narration of a sage who states in the Rigveda that his role in society is as a Bard while his father's occupation was as a physician. There is no mention of untouchability. The Manusmriti and all smritis by there very discription are derivation. They dont have authority over revelation Sruti.
