Of all the TED talks I ever saw, this was the one I played about fifteen times over. It's a really marvelous piece of research, going from science and psychology to relationships and religion and back again. Deep but no fluff, no vagueness, solid analysis and not a word wasted.
I Love the way people like this love learning about life and how they are trying to become better people. its admirable and I wish there were more people in the world like this. keep up the research and keep your vulnerability Brene. Every time i think about becoming completely vulnerable, i think about what happened to Jesus and the consequence of his complete loving vulnerability and i suddenly no longer want to be vulnerable. i kind of feel like it's dangerous to be vulnerable in a world where you may be the only one in every thousand people who has a "spiritual awakening" like Brene. the numb people hunt for the vulnerable and attempt to make them withdraw, for this is their only source of happiness.

It seems there are issues here and you're struggling to face them so you're lashing out at this video. Everything you're saying is evident of this. What you should do, to make yourself feel worthy, is to step back...keep your opinions to yourself and allow others to glean what they can from this video. Don't tear down, but allow growth. @twalker294 Most TED talks are good, but what we see here is the walking stereotype of a depressed, anal retentive, out of shape, middle-aged, upper-middle-class white American woman. She seriously just needs to get banged a few times, but it's probably too late for that. She's also saying that there's nothing abstract or wishy-washy about courage, It affects your identity, your happiness, your relationships. It sounds like she's done aimed at objective research and reached interesting findings. Which part annoys you? If it's uninspiring, fine. But if it really was crap, which part did you think was irrelevant or bullshit?

I'm 42, a degree in economics, earn a lot of money, 17 years of Buddhism, I moved to Japan, exhibit my paintings, have 4 lovers... her point is what I would say is THE most important thing I've learned. She just clarified it for me. She's bridged science, art and religion to get to where she is. And I don't know anyone who discusses this stuff who learned without courage and suffering.
My guess is you're not smarter or less smart than others. It's not IQ. Probably you've learned that life is about certain facts or some schema which overlooks the every paradoxical nature of choice and the dilemmas which plague human relationships, and makes it all sound simple. As a result you haven't noticed the issues she's addressing are very important, but very difficult to pin down. Without this, it's difficult to be very happy on a regular basis beyond satisfaction, so it's absolute gold.

@2lasiiJAkuppi Did it make me happier? No, it just clarified for me what my happiness is based on. If you didn’t know it, I think it would make you happier for learning it, but I learned this ages ago, by watching old people deal with death and thinking it through. Maybe you learned to accept vulnerability in your own way, but in my experience, this is uncommon wisdom and even when people learn it, it's very difficult to describe it logically and empirically as this woman has.
@leconfidant So i watched it again and got her message. But what i noticed was it had flaws in it. Vulnerability is not the only thing leading to happiness, connection is only her philosophy on why we are put here. And she is unfortunately promoting ppl to not get in better shape but to instead embrace the vulnerability and be happy with who you are. You should always be happy with who you are, but i think you should strive to be in good shape and try to become a better person every day.
@leconfidant Accept it everyone is going to die why even think about it. It is impossible to live a life without suffering at some point you cant avoid it but you can try to maximize pleasure. Im gonna try to live as many years as i can and try to avoid stuff that can kill me (use a belt to avoid dying in a car crash) I choose stuff on bases of research and %, for example im not buying a gun since that multiplies the risk of me dying.

@2lasiiJAkuppi Your right - the purpose of an animal (like humans are) is to survive the strugle of life to make sure that your genetic is continued. On a base level that is it, so just like a virus, the gene is continued.
The thing about voicing a veiwpoint is that some will find a conection to it, and others will not. Personally I found that it started me thinking on who I veiw things and how my veiws due affect my actions and therefore who people veiw me. I like the humour in her talk
@2lasiiJAkuppi She's not advocating vulnerability per se. Nobody aims at suffering unless they're fucked up on guilt. No. It's more like 'A man has to recognise his limitations'. Assessing both sides of the story and being accountable for your decision is cool, but she's saying sometimes you have to admit there's no way of knowing and at those moments, your decision isn't about what you know, but about who you are and what you believe in (your values, not facts).

not true in that case you cant choose a side, you don't have enough evidence and a) you need more evidence (you do a research) or b) you compromise. I don't choose a person because of his skin religion if he is from the same country as i am but that's just me and im not just saying that.

For each, you have to make a decision, but the evidence pointing one way or another is negligable. And in each case, it requires a whole-hearted decision in order to make a difference.

@2lasiiJAkuppi I'm not advocating hippy values at all. When you look at those question, Osama Bin Laden would say life is unimportant. The only goodness is war and peace and beauty are irrelevant. Objective evidence won't move him.
More importantly, our own decisions on these can't be based on objective facts, only decisions of value. No equations or measurements will help us decide.

And now after i understand her message i understand why i felt like it was crap in the first place. I think she should have told her message better, i also think a lot of ppl got the wrong message from this. She should have said be happy with who you are but strive to become better everyday. The oil company and the certainty factor thees didn't register with me.
@2lasiiJAkuppi I see a lot of ‘spiritual / self improvement’ stuff which is just people espousing values without really saying anything and my reaction is the same as yours. This is different, because like you, she starts from the objective empirical assumption ‘If you can’t measure it, it doesn’t exist’ and continued like that. Courage isn’t as commonsense as you think. Many live simply to avoid suffering and maximise pleasure. It doesn't work when you have to protect ideals or face death.

In church we are taught to say "O Lord, I am not worthy to receive You, but only say the word and my soul will be healed." We need to change that to "O Lord, I know I am not perfect, but since you find me worthy, help me to realize that I am worthy. Help me to see past my own and everyone else's imperfection, and to know we are all worthy in Your eyes."

Of all the TED talks I ever saw, this was the one I played about fifteen times over. It's a really marvelous piece of research, going from science and psychology to relationships and religion and back again. Deep but no fluff, no vagueness, solid analysis and not a word wasted.

Every time i think about becoming completely vulnerable, i think about what happened to Jesus and the consequence of his complete loving vulnerability and i suddenly no longer want to be vulnerable. i kind of feel like it's dangerous to be vulnerable in a world where you may be the only one in every thousand people who has a "spiritual awakening" like Brene. the numb people hunt for the vulnerable and attempt to make them withdraw, for this is their only source of happiness.

It seems there are issues here and you're struggling to face them so you're lashing out at this video. Everything you're saying is evident of this. What you should do, to make yourself feel worthy, is to step back...keep your opinions to yourself and allow others to glean what they can from this video. Don't tear down, but allow growth. She's also saying that there's nothing abstract or wishy-washy about courage, It affects your identity, your happiness, your relationships. It sounds like she's done aimed at objective research and reached interesting findings. Which part annoys you? If it's uninspiring, fine. But if it really was crap, which part did you think was irrelevant or bullshit?

I'm 42, a degree in economics, earn a lot of money, 17 years of Buddhism, I moved to Japan, exhibit my paintings, have 4 lovers... her point is what I would say is THE most important thing I've learned. She just clarified it for me. She's bridged science, art and religion to get to where she is. And I don't know anyone who discusses this stuff who learned without courage and suffering.

My guess is you're not smarter or less smart than others. It's not IQ. Probably you've learned that life is about certain facts or some schema which overlooks the every paradoxical nature of choice and the dilemmas which plague human relationships, and makes it all sound simple. As a result you haven't noticed the issues she's addressing are very important, but very difficult to pin down. Without this, it's difficult to be very happy on a regular basis beyond satisfaction, so it's absolute gold.

@2lasiiJAkuppi Did it make me happier? No, it just clarified for me what my happiness is based on. If you didn’t know it, I think it would make you happier for learning it, but I learned this ages ago, by watching old people deal with death and thinking it through. Maybe you learned to accept vulnerability in your own way, but in my experience, this is uncommon wisdom and even when people learn it, it's very difficult to describe it logically and empirically as this woman has.

@leconfidant So i watched it again and got her message. But what i noticed was it had flaws in it. Vulnerability is not the only thing leading to happiness, connection is only her philosophy on why we are put here. And she is unfortunately promoting ppl to not get in better shape but to instead embrace the vulnerability and be happy with who you are. You should always be happy with who you are, but i think you should strive to be in good shape and try to become a better person every day.

A) No. Sooner or later, you find suffering is innevitable and in the end, you suffer so much you actually die.
So then the question changes from
Q) How much can I avoid suffering and death?
to
Q) What am I prepared to suffer and die FOR?
This isn't wooly thinking, it's hardcore and it moves you from pleasure into Purpose.

@leconfidant Accept it everyone is going to die why even think about it. It is impossible to live a life without suffering at some point you cant avoid it but you can try to maximize pleasure. Im gonna try to live as many years as i can and try to avoid stuff that can kill me (use a belt to avoid dying in a car crash) I choose stuff on bases of research and %, for example im not buying a gun since that multiplies the risk of me dying.

That someday ppl will say earth is heaven. I have my own philosophy but this has nothing to do with what she said and why i don't like how she told her message. @2lasiiJAkuppi Your right - the purpose of an animal (like humans are) is to survive the strugle of life to make sure that your genetic is continued. On a base level that is it, so just like a virus, the gene is continued.
The thing about voicing a veiwpoint is that some will find a conection to it, and others will not. Personally I found that it started me thinking on who I veiw things and how my veiws due affect my actions and therefore who people veiw me. I like the humour in her talk

@2lasiiJAkuppi She's not advocating vulnerability per se. Nobody aims at suffering unless they're fucked up on guilt. No. It's more like 'A man has to recognise his limitations'. Assessing both sides of the story and being accountable for your decision is cool, but she's saying sometimes you have to admit there's no way of knowing and at those moments, your decision isn't about what you know, but about who you are and what you believe in (your values, not facts).

For each, you have to make a decision, but the evidence pointing one way or another is negligable. And in each case, it requires a whole-hearted decision in order to make a difference.
You have to go beyond evidence into purpose.

More importantly, our own decisions on these can't be based on objective facts, only decisions of value. No equations or measurements will help us decide.
So you go from

And now after i understand her message i understand why i felt like it was crap in the first place. I think she should have told her message better, i also think a lot of ppl got the wrong message from this. She should have said be happy with who you are but strive to become better everyday. The oil company and the certainty factor thees didn't register with me.

This is different, because like you, she starts from the objective empirical assumption ‘If you can’t measure it, it doesn’t exist’ and continued like that. Courage isn’t as commonsense as you think. Many live simply to avoid suffering and maximise pleasure. It doesn't work when you have to protect ideals or face death.

In church we are taught to say "O Lord, I am not worthy to receive You, but only say the word and my soul will be healed." We need to change that to "O Lord, I know I am not perfect, but since you find me worthy, help me to realize that I am worthy. Help me to see past my own and everyone else's imperfection, and to know we are all worthy in Your eyes."
