This, right here, is my favorite jazz song EVER. These guys are so good at what they do, it's insane. I might give this song a shot on drums at some point...seems like a nice challenge.
I learned some of my best drumming to this band... The style is great and its great for kids to listen to!! All I want is a sweet car and cruise the open road blasting The Rippingtons
@smithforthphd Seriously? I praise a song I like and thats a response to it? "Upset with with your language?" Grandma is that you? Get a grip dude. Welcome to the land of free expression.
Oh and about the "submissive girl" part ... having mommy issues? fnarr fnarr...
I too first heard The Rippingtons as bumper music on the weather channel and it took me a while to figure out who that was playing, but when I did it was smooth jazz for me from then on. I also have somewhere between ten and fifteen of their CD's.
The first time I heard "The Rips" I was there biggest fan and have been since 1985 and have met all of them on many occasions. Kim is great to hang out with. They have been my favorite group thru all these years and will always be, I mean how can you improve on perfection???
I remember meeting my first wife at a rippingtons concert, we both heard them for the first time on the Weather Channel and loved them ever since. Well my first wife passed on from a tragic auto accident, but when I listen to the smooth sounds of the Rippingtons it reminds me of the good times that I used to have with her.
Also how can Kenny G possibly say bad things about these guys? They are better than he ever was.Jealousy I think.
Sometimes I blast the Rippingtons and watch the people who walk down the street stare in contempt, but you know what? IT"S THE FUCKING RIPPINGTONS! I DON"T CARE WHAT THEY SAY RIPPINGTONS 4 LIFE, I AM DOWN TIL I DIE!This is what musical perfection sounds like, and Kenny G has no right to shittalk them whatsoever, fuck kenny G the rippingtons are 100 times better.
Special tanks to francesco per avermi fatto conoscere i RIPPINGTONS!! good music, good time...
Slick, nice melodies, cool chord changes, great arrangement, pretty song. I prefer stuff with a little more edge and improve though i.e. Michael Brecker "Some Skunk Funk" .
I bought an mp3 player just for their music, so much good stuff, I might add some others artists that are my favorites later LOL......many years of great music Thanks Rippingtons
I've been digging this album since it came out. I'm a bass player and I must have played this one song twenty times before I continued on to the last three. I knew there was a video on VHS somewhere but I couldn't find it. Anyone know if it's on DVD?
incredible music. remember... as much as we... are shall we say... irritated... by those who would insult the musical integrity of this kind of work, we must remember that we are far above calling them the no-brain idiotic automatons that they are and simply ENJOY:-)
I wish people wrote music like this today. i am so disappointed in my generation. im 24 years old and i play drums to this band everyday. if i were to pick up a girl and drive her in my car while the rippingtons was on, she'd laugh at me. but if kayne west was on, it would be ok? whats wrong with people today?
This version of the Ripp's has deepest group "soul" and largest group "personality" out of any of their lineups. They had the magic. When their drummer Tony left, it seems like they lost a lot. Not that they're not great now, they were at their pinnacle in the early 90's
That's Kim Stone playin that Bass ... He's one og the primary reasons I loved Spyro-Gyra! - Man, we need more groups like this who play songs that make people happy an get people on their feet ... Dance ... Move ... feel the Power and let it Groove!
oh my...that bass solo was pretty sick, a bit too many ghost notes for my taste, but still pretty sick...the guy with the keytar just made the whole thing 20 times cheesier than it already was. what the fuck was he thinking!?
Thanks to those that comment on the music. And screw the superficial lame asses that can only bash hair styles. Our world has created some sick one sided people. Close your EYES and OPEN your EARS! That's what this is ALL about.

I love how these guys always look so happy and pumped up when they play in all of these live videos...it really brings out the energy in their powerful music...I really like Jeff Kashiwa's alto sound, it's fat, powerful and sweet!
That is not his website. That is the website of the program he used to convert the video. It is a free version of the program which therefore puts the website address up automatically. Sure hope your toes taste good, lol. Next time think before you speak.
Try and understand. He used a free program to convert the video. By doing so, the program that he used automatically placed the website address up. He had no control over it. Now, if you cant deal with that, you dont have to watch it. In my opinion, it doesnt screw up the video, the video is still very watchable and listenable. For you to call him a tosser is uncalled for. As for my toe remark, use your brain, its not that difficult to understand. Thank you dbh for posting this video.
Try to understand. I'm sure DBH is a wonderful person. But the video benefits from NOT HAVING THE MESSAGE IN THE MIDDLE. It's not that difficult to understand.
This is my last word on this subject. Take a look around and you will see that YOU are the only one complaining. And I see that it is either 1 of 2 reasons. Either you are mad because you cant copy and sell the video, or you are just a kid looking for an argument. Either way, I feel sorry for you. For the rest of us, the video is very watchable and very listenable. Your petty argument is no longer worth my time. Again, much thanks to dbh for this. And dont pay any attention to this guy.
I've seen a version of this video on Youtube before without the banner. This video is available on the DVD that you get when you buy the Rippingtons 20th Anniversary CD available from their website.
Working for Dean Markley Strings had the chance to be back stage and talk with Russ Freeman, Truly a down to earth guy with sooooo much talent in just his little finger....the guy is real and great!!!
We never completely view and analyize Russ or Kims riffs due to the poor selection of video angles. The essence of this band is that slick original sound that makes you think Rippingtons/California. I met Kim Stone. He is a very humble and genuine person. Quite a gifted bassist. Go to Mark King on YouTube and witness his solo. King was the original slap bassist.
No hay nada como los Rippingtons: sabor a menta, a sol y mar... sublime y picaro; descongestionante y energizante, pero sobre todo, de ¡MUY BUEN GUSTO! Arriba el jazz contempo!!!!!
The only bad thing about the Rippingtons in these series of clips is that they all went to the same hairdresser and got those goddam mullet hairstyles. Other than that, the Rippingtons are da bomb!!! :)
Jeff Kashiwa...damn. He should've stayed with them, but his solo albums are okay. The Rippingtons will always be the best. Big Sky, Rain, and Tourist In Paradise? Come on, can't be beat.
Russ and these guys have been at the top of the jazz game for years. What talent! Jeff and Steve were always a blast to watch live and Kim's bass solo in this show is simply UN-BELIEVABLE!!! Thanks for all the great music, Ripps, and keep it coming!
I was fortunate enough to have caught this tour at the Concord Pavilion in California. The Ripps were performing with the best of the "Best of the Best" at that time. I didn't know who they were before the show. They blew everyone else that perfomed that day off the stage. It was evident by the crowds reaction. Russ, bring back the dymanic boys from the day!!! You were unparalled and untouchable then. Jazz needs to have the juice back again!!!
Jeff Kashiwa is awsome man. The only think I didn't like was the keyboard player. Why the hell are you going to play brass on your keyboard if you have horn section already doing that? but besides that he did great.
I think both sax players fit well in this music. The thing is Jeff uses more the Tenor ,at least in his solo albums, and is more an EWI player than Eric is.
They have been 'rippin' it up for 25 years now, and give you your money's worth if you are lucky enough to see them perform. How about another 25 years, guys?
Kim Stone adds the funkiest touch to an already jammed up band!! Steve Reid is the greatest at percussion, and Jeff Kashiwa jazzes it up with that sexy sax playin'!! Russ, PLEASE bring the bamd back to 'Bama real soon !!!
I think it's pathetically funny when audiences with no sense of rhythm clap along with bands on the wrong beat, or off the beat, so you get this jumble-fuck mess of a ffwap sound. As you can see at 1:52 they are clapping on 1 & 3. Then finally they figure out that the snare hits are actually on 2 & 4 at 3:30. GEEZ...IDIOTS!!
Talent is a gift and the sense of where the up or down beats sit is for us music people to care about. Those non rhythmic people pay our bills and enjoy us. Let it be.
FRICKEN FLAWLESS!!!! This same performance can be heard on their Live In L.A. album! I don't see how mullets were cool back then! But gawd!! I wish I could have seen them back in those days! :( ...and don't forget about Paul Taylor!
i seen em in K.C. in 92' before Weekend in Monaco came out,we were the first crowd to hear it live, they were awesome that was the best ripps lineup ever
Russ Freemann And The Rippingtons Live I Saw Them A Year And Half Ago In The Pageant In The Loop In St.Louis Missouri Me And My Wife Love These Guys #1 In Smooth Jazz!! #21

Kim Stone adds the funkiest touch to an already jammed up band!! Steve Reid is the greatest at percussion, and Jeff Kashiwa jazzes it up with that sexy sax playin'!! Russ, PLEASE bring the bamd back to 'Bama real soon !!!

They are great but Kashiwa hasn't been with them for quite a while.

I know, they replaced him with Eric Marienthal the last time I saw them live, which was a few years ago..

Let it be.
