  • I wish i had as much passion in life as what Thunderf00t does via Science. I have lost my passion for most everything :( But well done TF, you certainly give us something to think about :) I appreciate your video's :).

  • wow .. now i know ..tnx

  • it was cool

  • lunar eclipse, the moon will be red, solar the sun will be black..then how about blue moon haw it happen?

  • Peopl say the freaking world will end this day , but it WAS true . Now , instead of the meteor crashing into earth, it will go around us , and then it will circle the earth and cover the sun, giving us no sunlight for 36 hours, which is also very dangerous, considering after the eclipse , Morning will be Night, and Night will be Morning, so go back to sleep for the rest of the day once you wake up Dec. 21, cause its gonna be dark out, and at 1 in the morning, it will be like the afternoon !!!!!!

  • When I watched this lunar eclipse, it was about 30 degrees and raining like crap. But I still got to see it :D

  • If anyone in the uk is interested in science then I highly recommend Wanders of the Universe by Professor Brian Cox on BBC2 every sunday, missed episodes can still be seen on BBC iplayer.

  • I couldn't see it, it was far too cloudy that night. Still, I have seen them before, and they are truly something to behold.

  • Pity it happened when Australia was in midday. I did get to see the partial eclipse in June though, that was nice.

  • Celestia! YAY!

  • bang in the middle!

  • Didn't get to see it, but this was nice regardless.

  • i wasn't able to get a good view of it. Clouds in Central NY

  • Jeez you get a lot of nobs bitching on your channel, otherwise, still enjoy your vids!

  • Unfortunately the weather was rubbish where I live, too. Better luck next time--if I'm still around.

  • i have a problem with celestia:

all planet texture won't work. all bodies show up red. any ideas? please help!

  • o ya..i remember this.

Got up at half seven to see it (GMT)

Saw feck all because of clouds.

    Disapointing :(....

  • Sadly, the sky was cloudy. We were letting my 8 year old daughter stay up to see it (no school next day and all). And the sky was great as the sun set. But as the moon rose higher, the clouds rolled in, and gradually thickened. By the time the moon was in Earth's shadow, the clouds were thick.

Well, she's young. There will be plenty more for her to witness.

  • didn't get to see it that well, due to clouds! but it sure was worth getting up for :)

  • I went camping with my girl, high in the mountains in AZ. Best lunar eclipse ever.

  • TROLLLOLOLOLOLOLL

    MONEY FOR ATHEIST LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • It clouded out here in cleveland and my telescope is a bit shitty. I did however find a livestream online so i watched in in my nice warm home

    twas beautiful.

  • Good video! Sorry you missed it. We got to see the first half, then clouded out.

  • Shit I missed this golden opportunity.

  • I did not get to record this event but I was very fortunate to see Venus transit the sun on June 4, 2004. The next time that happens It might be a cloudy day, or anything else might happen. That truly was a much more rare thing to see, and at least I got to see that. However any of these sun and lunar eclipses are their own unique jewels to to be treasured and nature is giving them away for fee.It was just cloudy this time around. ( darn ). Next time moon. ; )

  • dispite the fact I was working, I managed to see the eclipse. I am very greatful I did. I almost always miss such events. The clouds opened up a few hours, just long enough to see the moon slowly disappear, figuratively speaking of course.

  • Hiked up to the top of Mt. Diablo here in the east bay area for this, great view but cold and EXTREMELY WINDY!! Was a good idea to bring a blanket and some wine.

  • I was told it was the first lunar eclipse in 4000 years to occur during a full moon. I tried reasoning that just before the beginning of a total lunar eclipse, given a clear sky and the moon is above the horizon at our location, we have a view of one of the most perfect full moons observable from Earth and that this one was special only because it coincided with the date of the winter solstice, for the first time since 1638. But I had to condescend with him like with a child. He's 35, I'm 21 ¬_¬

  • Too cloudy, did not see

  • another pile of crap!

  • @TrollerCoaster11 /watch?v=jNQxaZwk_pg

  • I saw it! :D

  • Oh, man...the weather was beautiful all night until just about one hour before it was supposed to begin.. But then it got really, relly cloudy and overcast. Arrrgh! I had set up my telescope and everything and was SO looking forward to it! : )

  • See you in Cornwall!

  • I it from start to finish.

  • I saw it!

  • I missed it, such an overcast that night. And i now live in the country so i can't blame city living.

  • Tried to video it but the skies were full of snow clouds.

  • Well "I" saw it.

Freezing my ass off, but I saw it.

Rare lunar eclipse at the Winter Solstice......a 400 year wait.

  • .

    @BrightStaroftheDawn.

    You waited four hundred years?

    But how?

Oh wait... are you a twilighter?

    -.-

  • @EssedariusMaiestas

    By cracky,

how the hell did you know?

  • I set my alarm for the wrong timezone and missed it :(

  • The freaken moon was hiding better then Osama Bin Laden in Houston Tx that night and i was pissed.

  • You and I were both very unfortunate that day. :P

  • Too bad it was raining when it happened. Oh, well. Bad light pollution over here anyway...

  • I was on the wrong side of the planet unfortunatly. But I've already seen one a few years back. Congratulations everyone who got to see it.

  • Nice Video! Thumbs UP! I didn't get to see it... I was never told... Also, I don't watch much TV...

  • I'm upset due to my inability to see past the clouds.

  • Nasty fog in San Diego, snuck out onto the rooftop of my apartment to try and see it but didn't see anything :(

  • Thunderfut is a stoopid atheeist. Dum ass. yewre goin to hel mann. Whye r yoo soo stoopid? God is gowing to stryke yoo down mann. Get a brane dummy. Think abowt it. God haz to bee thare!11!!! He is so cool. I hayte stoopid dum ases lyke yoo. Fukking idyot!!!

  • @devildriverlambofgod

how many trolls can a troll's troll troll

if a troll could troll trolls?

    You would know, being one.

  • @lucienshand

    Epic.

Can I steal that quote from you?

  • Yup, I had cloudy weather in Michigan so I never got to see it. :(

  • Love it TF. You have a fantastic way of presenting scientifically intriguing facts. Keep up the great work <3

  • it was cloudy those to days

    FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

  • my grandma phoned me on the night that this happened , unfortunately for us the skies were fully clouded so we didn't get to see it :/ ......

  • If only I had seen this the day before... I'm from Upstate New York. Although the skies were dim, I did enjoy seeing the entire night sky turn a reddish hue. I wonder if Thunderf00t teaches at a school near me

  • With reality like this, who needs religion?

  • I live in Montreal and it was a very cold night. I walked an hour or so to watch the eclipse from belvedere kondiaronk on Mount Royal, maybe one of the best places in town to look at the sky. Sadly, even tough the moon was clearly visible all the way to this beautiful spot, when I arrived there just in time for the beginning of the eclipse, the sky suddenly became very cloudy and I stayed a couple hours in the freezing night hopping to see a bit of the eclipse through rare holes in the clouds :(

  • Great video.

I missed this, it was not going to be visible in Bulgaria, where I am now. Just before I left the UK for the holidays I was playing around with Stellarium and noticed the eclipse, it was going to be visible some time before moonset there. A few degrees east make a big difference. The solar eclipse on Jan 4 however is going to be visible here around 10am, looking forward to that.

  • I was awake preparing for work when this happened. Somehow I didn't hear about it, and the last one I watched was at least 8 years ago. I'm severally disappointed.

  • It was amazing!

  • Thanks for the video! I love the Celestia animations. I tried working with the program, but was never patient enough to be able to do much with it. I might fool around with it during the holidays.

  • Ugh I was in India for this so missed it. But on the upside... I'm in India :)

  • Took enough film for approx. 180 pics, and managed 22 due to cloud cover :( Pretty though!

  • The universe is infinitely beautiful.

  • How could anyone dislike this video?

  • @Cinnarbar Maybe they're Flat-Earth advocates? ;)

  • i saw the end of the eclipse after the overcast cleared from southern Ontario.

  • TF, be careful with addressing your general whereabouts. I could be overly cautious, but due to past threats you may want to keep your general locale more anonymous.

  • What was the software you used to make the animations? Another Good one TF!

  • @CaptBart he's using Celestia, its a free program you can download. It's a little dated now but still an awesome program! Exploring the moons of the giant planets on it is pretty cool.

  • @TopSpeedCGT Cool, Thanks man!

  • hey thunderfoot would you make a video explaining the difference between a Winter/summer Solstice? or equinox? and how does that compare to solar/lunar eclipses. i couldn't find a video on you tube making this clear in graphical or descriptive language. still hard to understand how the sun moves up and down in the polar regions but never sets, i think i get it, but it's so weird. vote thumbs up if you to want this next video :)

  • GAH! I MISSED IT! Oh well.... I think it was snowing anyway.....

  • It looked awesome in NYC.

  • Unfortunately we experienced a blizzard during the night of the eclipse in northern Minnesota.

... And of course, clear skies the very next night.

Let's just hope the skies are clear for everyone in 2094.

  • The sky was completely blanketed in clouds that night and you couldn't see a damn thing, unfortunately.

  • I am in East Central Newfoundland. It was clouded over here but my cousin In Alberta got some really good time-lapsed pics of it and posted on fb.

  • @Thunderf00t I believe you meant "than" in the note on your video.

  • ....i went out at 1:33 and 3:15 as those were the recomended times and i coudnt find the fucking moon, perfectly clear skies except for the small patch where the moon was the entire night................

  • I rained where I was last couple of days. :<

  • I watched this with my breakfast on my balcony

  • Currently out of state in Indiana on a visit. All my family and friends in Arizona got to see it, whilst the shitty midwest weather blocked it for me. Oh well, I'll try and catch the next one.

  • @KitRedFox Hah, I live here in Indiana, all this heavey fog and shitstorm I couldn't see crap, extremely disapointed.

  • FUCK im not gonna see it

  • It was snowing here, so I missed it. I've seen lunar eclipses before, but not on winter solstice, but a lunar eclipse is a lunar eclipse. Next chance to see one is in june next year, and then in december.

  • /watch?v=_AfgizVU6Mc

  • Tell us something we *DON'T* know.

    Then I'd be impressed.

  • I'd be *really* impressed if Tf00t worked out the math for this event all alone in some basement in NY.

Sadly, reciting some thousand+ year old common knowledge, is just a magicians illusion.

Thanks for the *reminder* TF, but *YES* we already knew this, & *NO* you don't get browny points for stating the*FUCKING OBVIOUS*.

  • too low on the horizon for me, even if the skies were clear :-(

and why do 16 people don't like this video????

  • Me and my cousin sat outside to watch it, and there was a point where the clouds completed obscured our view. She looked at me and asked, "Does that count?"

  • :O i wonder where he lives cos i'm in upstate ny too.

  • It was frickin snowing here in Boston. Figures I missed it.

  • Stupid rain, I wanted to see this :(

  • was cloudy where i am too. bummer. but I've seen one before

  • Anyone else here noticed that venomfangx is back.. again? :p

  • i swear every time some thing like this happens it is overcast & i don't get to see it

  • Than* and no, the weather was terrible here in California too.

  • dont feel bad cloudy skies here around chicago so no sight of the lunar eclipse here either

  • Awww I didn't get to see it my parents wouldn't let my sit a watch it all night:( hmmmmmm oh well there's always these videos

  • saw it. loved it.

  • I live in North Carolina. It was total cloud cover all night D:

  • I was so looking forward to this. The solstice and the eclipse together.

However, I live in a temperate rain forest.

  • Totally clear skies way up where I am, me and the missus watched the whole thing from our window

  • it was awesome. thanks for the heads up.

  • I saw it. It was a clear winter night with many stars viable as well. It was beautiful.

  • I saw the first part of it, but it's colder than a witch's tit up here at 1am so I hurried back inside. (No offense to any practicing Wiccans, btw.)

  • I saw the start, the moon faded but than I didn't see the redness of it. It didn't appear(I didn't see it appear) after it disappeared :(

  • I'm sad, I couldn't see it. It was too cloudy that night out where I live. : (

  • this was my first time i saw the eclipse it took forever

  • I saw it, freaking awesome

  • Nothing but rain over here. Very disappointed :(

  • Missed it. Too cloudy.

  • why does god make eclipses in the winter when it's cloudy?

  • Bad weather here in Southern California (USA) too :(

  • I saw this stoned out of my mind on the top of my truck with a friend as we listened to pink floyd.

  • @Squipplekillzbitches lol iv never been stoned but laying ontop of a truck facing the stars with pink floyd in the background, thats just heaven man.

  • @Squipplekillzbitches see you on the dark side of the moon!

  • @largegrainsofsalt

    allyourlifewilleverbe>ytmnd>com

    my mind that night

  • i saw it from england at about 7 oclock.

  • FML. First the northern lights blocked out by clouds, then a meteor shower, then this lunar eclipse, ALL THIS YEAR. =(

  • The lunar eclipse was beautiful.

I really enjoyed the way the eclipse made the stars so visible, I could clearly see the constellations, which is very unusual in our highly lit urban areas.

  • A lunar eclipse occurred on the night of my wife's birthday, back when we'd just started dating. It was 'magical' - so of course I told her I'd arranged for it to happen that way, in her honor.

Oh right, like you wouldn't use celestial powers to try to score?

    d;^)

  • I had a great view in Tallahassee. It seems the darkness of the shadow pulsates across the face of the moon. The darkness gets lighter, then darker. Why would an eclipse be this inconstant?

  • i got to see it in west virginia. i was driving back from d.c. as it was starting around 1, but clouds formed the further west we got. but then around 3 a.m. we got some breaks in the clouds and there it was... an orange moon. so awesome

  • The weather sucked in Cheshire too. DAMMIT!

  • How would it look if you were on the moon at the time of the eclipse? Would every thing around you be redish-orange because of the light, and how would Earth look like from there? Do they have pictures from the moon prospective of a Lunar Eclipse?

  • @Everfrost1000 You would have seen a total solar eclipse if you were standing on the moon.

  • @Everfrost1000, I wish NASA would release some photos of such a thing! Surely they had some probes if not an Apollo lander on the moon during at least one total lunar eclipse!

You know how the sky turns reddish at sunset? Well, from the Moon’s PoV, when the Earth eclipses the Sun, you’d see a similar but more intense redness (because the light passes through even more atmosphere than it does at sunset as seen from the Earth’s ground), and it would soon stretch ALL THE WAY AROUND THE EARTH!!

  • @Everfrost1000, (cont.)

That effect would be like a large glowing orangish-red ring around the Earth. Lights on the night side may be visible inside the eclipsed area, but probably not at that distance and not in the glare of the red ring.

That red ring lights up the whole lunar landscape, which is why, from OUR PoV, the Moon turns a deep orangish-red during a total lunar eclipse!

Just imagine what that must look like from the Moon’s PoV!

  • It was snowing :(

  • well i guess ill wait till 2095 for the next one

  • The one night Massachusetts gets friggin' snow... >.<

  • It had snowed and the sky was overcast in Chicago.

  • Whoops

  • It had snowed

  • i fucking missed it

  • It was a pretty cool sight last night.

  • Doooomsdaaaaaay

  • too cloudy here in Maine to see.

  • Wow, you people are morons.

So I make a comment joking about how god created the eclipse for us to enjoy, and i instantly get flammed by someone who needs anger management, then I get @replies calling me immature, and to cut the bullshit. Really? So I'm the guy starting efight?

As soon as you people see someone mention God you all gang up on him no matter if its right or wrong.

Just because you're not christian doesn't mean you're not stupid.

Thunderf00t, good vid, sorry about the posts.

  • i guess them mayans were on to somethin eh?

  • Beautiful clear skies in Florida last night. Guess it's the Moonshine State as well. One question, though, there was still a sliver of white during totality. What is the definition of total in total eclipse? Seeing our shadow on the Moon is always neat though.

  • Thanks tf, great video as usual. I look at the night sky as often as I can but never thought of the shadow of the Earth imagery as you described. Very cool. Thanks again and Happy Solstice!

  • Saw the beginning of if on the way to work this morning (Nottingham England) pity I only saw the start of it due to the building having no windows on the side where the moon was

  • Unfortunately where I was the buildings where in the way.

Mind you I've seen a lunar eclipse before, but still would have been cool to see another one.

  • Some days I just feel like clouds can go fuck them selves, preferably somewhere else than where I am...

  • It was very cloudy in Fairfield, Connecticut. I was so angry I didn't get to see it!

  • It was hazy in Ontario, but I managed to catch it waning and re-emerging from shadow. Neato! =)

  • I video taped the climax (red part) at 3:17. beautiful to look at but not as exciting as everyone said. In my city there were no clouds luckily, and for some peculiar reason that night you could see the stars despite the light of the city polluting the sky, i may upload the video tomorrow if you'd like to see my perspective. If you do watch it, sorry for the crappy quality

  • Illinois got screwed stupid freakin clouds covering the sky

  • Man for as many clouds as there where this animation was 20X better!

  • This was truly amazing to look at, no clouds.

  • Darn, clouds where I live.

  • Stupid clouds

  • The clouds rolled in and kept us from catching the show. This animation, especially the view from the moon, clearly shows how it works.

  • isn't it great that god created all this for us to see?

its even better that HE let his favorite country, the country of the chosen ones, to see this alone.

isn't it obvious that as the fires of hell penetrates the surface, that we are the only ones to be saved!!!! (wait, that was a question) ?

  • @chadd990 Shut the fuck u
