So, let me get this straight. We are somehow honoring Jesus by ignoring Hanukkah when He Himself celebrated it. What am I missing?
I personally think we make a big mistake by dismissing respect for Hanukkah as "political correctness." Ramadan is in a different category, and don't get me started on Kwanzaa.
@AmosPressley Totally agree with you there, dude. Kinda funny considering that Hanukkah technically came before Christmas. And I say technically because the Christmas we know today borrows heavily from pagan traditions that date back to God knows when...
@AmosPressley You're missing the fact that Jesus celebrated Hanukkah because he was Jewish! Hanukkah is a celebration of Jewish historical event, like our fourth of July. We don't expect the people of other countries to acknowledge the fourth of July. Does that mean they are disrespecting us? No. They have their holidays and we have ours. No one is trying to disrespect anyone. Christmas is just a part of our US culture with 9/10 of all Americans, including non Christians, celebrating it.
@28bluestar Christmas is not an American holiday, it is a Christian holiday with as much legitamacy as Hanukkah. It is not like July 4th. The 4th of July is not a religious holiday.
@intrepidorator Yes, it is celebrated in many places and has Christian roots. But it is part of the our culture in the same way that Ramadan is a part of Iraqi culture. Does Ramadan belong to one country? No, but it is a part of national cultures. Christmas doesn't belong to America the same way the Fourth does, but it is part of our culture, christian and secular. 91% of Amercans celebrate it. In comparison, Iraq is 97% Muslim. Would you argue that Ramadan isn't part of their culture b/c of 3%?
@intrepidorator But anyway, my point wasn't that Christmas is an American holiday, but that Hanukkah is a Jewish Holiday. I was comparing Hanukkah to the fourth of July, not Christmas. Hence why it is not celebrated by America, or the larger christian culture, which was your original question.
@28bluestar Hanukkah is celebrated by the Jews in America. and Christmas is celebrated by the Christians in Isreal. But I see the question that your trying to ask. Why dont Christians celebrate Hanukkah? I don't know the answer to that question. After all Christians worship the same God that the Jews worship. The same God that Christians worship kept that menorah lit.
@intrepidorator Christians don't celebrate Hanukkah for the same reason Israel doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving like we do. Did the same God who kept the menorah lit also help protect the pilgrims? I believe so :) But both are related to the way God worked to help a particular nation, hence celebrated specifically by those nations to praise Him for the work he has done for them. God is at work all around us.
I don't see how you can say I am "missing the fact that Jesus celebrated Hanukkah because he was Jewish."
It seems to me that the people who are missing facts are the Christians who seem to think they must somehow defend the honor of Jesus when someone wishes them a Happy Holidays, and they treat Hanukkah as if it was some politically correct ploy set up by the Antichrist.
@AmosPressley If someone celebrates Hanukkah wish them Happy Hanukkah. If someone celebrates Christmas wish them Merry Christmas.
If someone wished you a happy Hanukkah would you feel offended? I wouldn't. Don't exaggerate, no one said anything about the antichrist. But it really does hurt people because it's a major source of division in America. Being sensitive is good when done in love, but when enforced legalistically it's no longer about love. Merry Christmas.
Of course, of course. No, I would not feel offended at all if someone wished me a happy Hannukah. I would be gratified to be in proximity of someone who at least knew enough about it to say the name.
I may be using the language of exxageration when I talk about the antichrist in this context, but it is not far off for some. You apparently have not been listening to some Christians. The rhetoric used by some Christians has been astounding.
@AmosPressley Most Americans know how to say the word Hanukkah. Hanukkah (Ramadan, kwanza.. ) gets more exposure relative to those who actually celebrate it here, than minority holidays get in many other countries. Truthfully, I would have wished Happy Hanukkah to anyone I knew who was celebrating it. I just don't know anyone personally who celebrates it... How many people do you know who do?
So why are you doing the same? If over exaggeration is wrong, then it's wrong no matter who does it.
Anyone know someplace to download audio only? I know I can dl with TubeTV and then strip it with iMovie...but then the quality would suck. If anyone knows please let me know - I'm dying to get this~!
The P C police should have a beef with this video because it didn't include the pagan celebration of Winter Solstice.
