oh look at the way she holds her reins :/ She looks like a total beginner when she's reining. Just give up, Anky, and stop hauling on your horse's mouths.
@ZapsDrater When one begins to make personal attacks, you know that you've won the argument. Don't get personal with me, there's no purpose behind it. I know quite a lot about horses and riding, actually. There's always more to learn, and I just learned that some people really can't handle the truth!
I thought the whole point of reining was that you could show off all those maneuvers with one hand the whole time. She still holds the reins with two hands and has quite a heavy contact. She looks rather stupid to me. Stick to dressage Anky.
she's not seriously changing disciplines for good, is she? this was just an exhibition, right?
...I think she did a nice job, but it was definitely more 'western dressage' than reining, reining doesn't do jogging, half-passes, and 2 tempe changes...makes me wonder what the training is on the horse, is he hers or borrowed?
...and reiners don't salute! I guess some habits are hard to break! ;)
I don't know if you've ridden reiners but in order for them to perform their maneuvers, they need to know how to half pass/leg yield and do everything she's showing off here that is considered more "dressage." That's why the equestrian world draws such strong comparisons between the dressage and reining maneuvers.
Wow! It is simply amazing that a dressage rider could pull this off! I mean ya she has to work on a few things but it is pretty cool she could put elements of dressage into her riding!
@caroleinwv I agree wholeheartedly. As a new rider coming to it at a later age (38), perhaps I have more of an understanding of just how different the disciplines are between Dressage and Reigning (Western Dressage). I am learning on horses that were trained in both, as well as show jumping. When I watch Anky reigning, I see a LOT of the Dressage habits in her posture, and hands. She's only been reigning a few years, and that's a damn good horse she's riding...give her a few more years...
@TheJDeaux and she may just become not only the "Queen of the Kurr" in Dressage, but in reigning. She has a lot of muscle memory to overcome, but I think she can do it...I've seen much worse reigning, for sure. I have also seen much better, but...she's still learning, and she IS LEARNING I saw the video from her first reining competition....Trust me - she's learning! I don't care how much you know about reigning...if you don't know Dressage...you have no right to judge. I'm Just sayin'
@TheJDeaux@caroleinwv A wonderful response jDeaux. I just think it is courageous and insightful when any rider opens their mind to explore other disciplines. I have grown weary of horse people who seem to need to denigrate other styles and why is it that people in general have to chip away at those who are successful?
@caroleinwv I'll answer the last question first. Jealousy. They know they will never be the horse person these people are, but can't be happy with what they have. Since they can't be happy with who and what they are, they have to tear down anyone they perceive as being better than they are. As to the first part of your response, it seems to me that if you want to truly be a horse person, you have to have at least a working knowledge of every discipline out there. That way, no matter how the...
@TheJDeaux horse was trained, you; as the rider will know how to respond to their actions. Or maybe its just that I've been horse mad since I was a child and have absorbed everything I could get my hands on for almost 4 decades about horses and riding BEFORE I took my first riding lesson! LOL! I took my first fall from a horse weekend before last. My teacher (a dear friend, who has reawakened a childhood dream I thought long dead) felt terrible. I, on the other hand, felt I had truly become...
@TheJDeaux jDeaux , you are correct. Muscle memory is a powerful thing. Anky is a wonderful athlete and to have controlled so much in a brief time should say enough.
Live the metaphor...its about the ride, not the ribbon.
@caroleinwv I love that metaphor, and I agree. I would add "If, at any point you fall off...get back on...it's well worth the pain".
For me, it's about the relationship between horse and rider. The horses I work with regularly are in their 20's, so they know when I'm doing something stupid, and when I'm doing something wrong because I don't know any better. You haven't lived until you've been chastised by a horse (I thought cats were bad!). After Styx threw me, he ignored...
@TheJDeaux every direction my friend and mentor gave him while she was riding him to try to find out why he bucked so unexpectedly...so he could come to me, head down, ears to the side, and press his forehead to my chest. He knew he had hurt me, and he felt bad. I told him I still loved him and would always have a carrot in my pocket for him. And I got back on him within the half hour, because I realized that it wasn't just MY confidence I had to restore...but his as well. It's a partnership.
@caroleinwv It looks like Anky's first international reigning competition was in November 2009 just over a year before this was posted. In 2009 you could see the rigidity of her dressage training clearly. Her arms were at the 45 degree angle the whole time, and there was a straight line from head to shoulder to hip to heel. In 2010 you saw her catch herself going into that rigid posture, and getting into the mouth...then trying to cover (Waving to the crowd, etc)...
@TheJDeaux that she realized she was doing these things in such a high adrenaline atmosphere (Which she is NOT accustomed to) shows HUGE growth as a rider, I think. I don't know how long it took her to attain the proficiency she did in dressage...and if you haven't seen her, check out her performance at the 06 WEG; but I look for her to be a real threat within the next few years in the reigning world. I'll bet a dollar to a dog biscuit. she'll be a reigning champ soon!
Were any of you who are criticizing Anky originally trained to ride English? Western and English are two completely different disciplines. She's proven herself in English (Three golds oughta get ya SOMETHING) now she's breaking habits that she was a lifetime training into herself. So, that being said...Judge not.
@xXGlamRiderXx Yes, I do know how she trains her horses, and she's not the harshest trainer out there by a long shot. Would I train my horses that way? probably not. Will you be seeing me compete at the WEG any time soon? NOPE.
@TheJDeaux I ride english now but was originally trained western when I was a kid(reining, barrels, poles, etc). Whether shes reining or doing dressage, the woman is always on the horse's mouth and never gets out of their face with the reins. She doesn't deserve to be well known like she is, simply because of her rollkur riding style.
@RachieRawrr Even bigger idiot. Can you even do ANYTHING except for walk, trot, canter and maybe pop a few jumps (something I'd expect a riding school child to be able to do!)
I went from riding a reining horse that stoped and backed up if you just simply lean back, to a HUS horse that is spur broke, they both are trained OPPOSITE. It took me a month to fully learn how to ride my new horse, and now am competing at AQHA level and winning. I bought my HUS horse for 4K, and am out there beating 30K+ horses now.
This tells you that Anky sucks, just because she swiched from dessage to reining doesn't mean it's an excuse for riding badly.
I was at WEG on the first day, and honestly Anky can't compete with them, she would have totally failed, and came in dead last.
Honestly it's not hard to have no rein contact on a horse. She would be much better off if she rode with barely any contact, but she just has to be on that horse's mouth.
@MissFearlessly Hahaha I was thinking the exact same thing the whole time I watched this, I'm glad someone agrees =) Though I guess it takes skill to do rollkur with one hand, but I probably only think that cause I would be in the dirt if I tried to do rollkur on my horse at all, let alone in a strong western bit...
Gack, I saw this at WEG. As a dressage rider, it dissapprove of her riding methods. Hyperflexion and telling amatur riders that it's okay to use rollkur when training horses. And now she decides to take up reining. I'm no expert on reining, but I know when I've seen a shit preformance. I sincerely wish someone of power had told her off long ago for how she rides.
Guys its a hard transition going from dressage to reining. Reining in itself takes a long time to learn, but when you learn something like dressage and then go to reining, it pretty much fucks up your entire mindset on how riding should be through the styles. Sure the basics are the same, but the advanced is not. So she made some mistakes, big whoop. and Seriously, in freestyle TWO HANDS DOES NOT MATTER. ANYTHING GOES IN FREESTYLE....IT'S AN EXHIBITION, NOT A COMPETITION.
@Weaponsmaster8595 reining or dressage, the rider should know the basic principle of controlling the horse. anky's dressage horses almost made her look good, shes been doing reining now for about 2 years and on what im sure is a super nice horse that ride should have been way better.
@Weaponsmaster8595 as for freestyle, there are some rules and yes going from one handed to two handed is not permissable. you either do the whole pattern one handed or two handed. as much experience as she is supposed to have i would have thought she could control the horse way better.
I have respect for here, and no, i'm not a reining/western rider but a Dressage en jumping rider.
