They were also rich. The females that have their foot binded, they were born from a high-class and rich family. Those that were not rich did not do foot binding.
You know, I dont believe that foot binding was a good practice but if I were those old women, I would be proud of my small feet as well, considering all the hell they went through to get them that way.
...um no, it was a chinese tradition.. they think that small feet are attractive and pretty. the smaller the womens feet are the more attractive they are.
It's a very interesting custom, and I can see why the ladies are proud of their tiny feet--in their eyes, they're upholding an ancient and revered custom. I'm glad it's no longer practiced because I can't stomach inflicting that on a child, but it's always sad to see traditions disappear (even if we're all better off that way lol). Long story short, I'm glad it's been documented. And those old ladies are ADORABLE. I bet they could tell a few good stories.
i know about this bound feet thing when i read a book in my school... i think it just crazy, why do women have to have an ugly feet to be able to get marry a good or wealthy person and have a normal life...
@XbandosXpker Bull shit! I've seen plenty of Chinese women with bounded feet in the land I came from. We were told that the Chine men prefer this so the women can't run away.
Many years ago, for some I imagine it wasn't JUST tradition. Men found it erotic. So foot binding back then would parallel to say, anorexia nowadays in the fact that girls do it originally to look more attractive.
@HotaruRyu Anorexia is actually an intense fear of gaining weight to the point of starvation. It's more of a mental disorder and people afflicted with it are not proud, but disgusted by the "fat" left on their bodies. As the interviewer stated, these women are proud of their feet. It's not a very good comparison. A better one would be lip plates, ear gauging, piercings, neck rings, etc. These are all physical modifications for beauty versus a psychological eating disorder.
@HotaruRyu I'd like to clarify anorexia nervosa, which is a serious psychological problem with horrific physical consequences including death. The condition does not apply to people who keep themselves underweight to achieve some ideal of beauty. A common thread in people (including men) with AN is some traumatic event that triggers need to be in control when life is out of their control. Weight is the one thing they CAN control. The weight loss is merely a symptom of a much larger problem.
@MysteryAC keep in mind this was a very old practice; and the women of old china actually accepted and wanted this. it was just considered... tradition. This is very similar to the US and african-americans (ex slavery) and we've rid of those wrong things we used to do. same thing with china and foot binding. technically, the chinese can call americans dicks for what WE'VE done too, so you shouldn't even be talking. ;)
Corsets, skinny jeans, foot binding, circumcision, etc. It's all according to culture, custom, style, or religion.
No offense to anyone - During those centuries, it's comparable to having nice breasts, nice hair, or a big booty..
There will always be people that dislike big feet, small feet, big breasts, small breasts, skinny / fat guys or girls .. and so on. YIPES. Can't seem to satisfy everyone eh.
in those days, women bound their feet for various reasons. Mostly because it was custom.. like having a bar mitzvah to show that you've become an adult. Those women bound their feet to show that they are from good families and to enable them to marry well. Children don't get much choice in these things.. like what religion they want to believe in or how they dress themselves or what vegetables they want to eat.. We raise them as we see fit ..[hope that makes sense]
@digitalyume (in response to your comment about children not having a choice in things and being raised as the parents and society sees fit): You're very right. And those things you mentioned are precisely the problem. If we espouse a value like "people should be free to choose what they want in life, and how they live", then we must understand too that a value like that is meaningless in the presence of forced tradition.
@digitalyume These quotes sum up the idea succinctly: "You are free to do as we tell you", "Go back to bed America, your government is in control again." - Bill Hicks.
Except this doesn't just apply to american government, but to all forms of institutionalized control. We should never give social customs a free pass due to being in fashion or traditional. Parents should act as guides only. But instead, too many of them think they own their kids. That always bites their ass when kids grow up.
the women parent would have to keep there feet to be 3 inches how they bound the feet sounds painful. if you anyone wants to know more just send me a message.
The bounded feet was not saw them as beauty but they did that to avoid being taking away by Mongolian men after being attacked because the feet bounded women couldnt walk well. If they couldnt walk well they couldnt ride horse either and without ability to ride a horse would be useless to Mongolian men who were horsemen. The feet bindings and such as building the great wall were related to preventing themselves from foreigners attack. The Chinese were very scare of the mighty Mongolians then.
I agree with almost everything you say except the last part. I think footbinding could be compared more to the corset or the burkha. Genital Mutilation is completely different, and let's remember that we see male circumcision as completely tolerable but on women it's mutilation. It's either both or neither.
@tosheatower I dont know too much about either topics, but just overall, female genital mutilation removes the clitoris, which allows a woman to feel sexual pleasure. Removing a male's foreskin doesnt affect the sensation of sexual pleasure at all. bit of inequality there? i think so.
@TheBestDamnThing94 I completely disagree. Taking any child regardless of male or female and cutting things off their bodies without their desire/permission is wrong. The main reason in the US people just see the two as different is because in the US we practice male circumcision and so think it's normal. Well in parts of Africa they practice female circumcision and think it's normal, when in fact both are equally messed up.
@tosheatower yeah you definitely have a point, its sad really, that things like these have to be done in the first place in order for anyone to be accepted to society or gain rights
Maybe he was kept from describing it. I mean, only 150 years ago, a scientist from I believe, Sweden, discovered that the reason why germs were spreading in hospitals is because people were not washing their hands with a solution before going onto their next task. He went insane, because people thought he was crazy for saying such things. So, imagine 13th century talk. I wonder how he must've felt.
'Lotus Feet' were not origionally to prevent the woman from running - it was seen as a sign of extreme beauty, due to an Emperors dancer, who had amazingly small feet and was considered the most beautiful woman of the time.
The Lotus Walk was considered highly erotic, especially as none of the men ever even saw the women without their shoes on.
It was also a display of wealth - the woman did not need to do physical manual labour, thus did not need easy movement.
It really is a matter of perspective. I'm not trying to defend the ancient practice, but you really have to understand the extreme cultural differences between the western and traditional oriental societies. Even today in modern China people are urged to get their legs elongated because it achieves higher working status. Same with foot binding only for different purposes.
Contemporary Chinese culture recognizes that foot binding (which involved breaking children's feet) was wrong. As an American, I hope Chinese people condemn antebellum slavery.
But human rights are universal. Foot binding ensured potential husbands that a foot-bound girl could not escape. Visiting China in 1659, Domingo Navarrete observed that foot-binding was "very good for keeping females at home" and that it would benefit "menfolk if it were also practiced everywhere else too." In the 1780s, Abbe Grosier said with foot binding "a Chinese woman is condemned almost to perpetual imprisonment." (source: Women and the family in Chinese history, by Patricia Ebrey)
bound foot practice was quite strange and painful for these women, the technique was to break the toes then wrapped underneath to the foot palm, a crack in between was visible, 48 positions of sexual acts was performed by bound feet womens husband, it was then banned, AMEN TO THE BANNING OF BOUND FOOT.
@bezerka I don't know how they get get aroused men, but it was said that the way the women(and young girls) put weight on their feet(otherwise they fall) will make their hips gently sway side to side. Perhaps yu don't know what female circumssion is? In the me the prepuce only is removed. In women, it;s as follows:
1- sometimes it's only the labia
2-or sometimes, it's the clitoris removed entirely- from the roots, and the labia is sewn shut.
If women can undergo this cruelty, you can hear of it at least.
The Chinese women of gnererally did suffer terribly.
Each type of repression on any part of the body, either the foot- or the gentials, was terrible, to endure every minute.

"'Lotus Feet' were not origionally to prevent the woman from running - it was seen as a sign of extreme beauty, ..."
That's the orfficial story, written by, who else, men. History is written by the ones on top, and certainly Confucian China had the pecking order.
Truth is, women have always been repressed worldwide, and China was no different. Imagine, a thousand years of pain and tears.
Footbinding is equal to female genital mutilation. Both contribute to mental slavery/resignation
