It's a very interesting custom, and I can see why the ladies are proud of their tiny feet--in their eyes, they're upholding an ancient and revered custom. I'm glad it's no longer practiced because I can't stomach inflicting that on a child, but it's always sad to see traditions disappear (even if we're all better off that way lol). Long story short, I'm glad it's been documented. And those old ladies are ADORABLE. I bet they could tell a few good stories.

It's more of a mental disorder and people afflicted with it are not proud, but disgusted by the "fat" left on their bodies. As the interviewer stated, these women are proud of their feet. It's not a very good comparison. A better one would be lip plates, ear gauging, piercings, neck rings, etc. These are all physical modifications for beauty versus a psychological eating disorder.

The condition does not apply to people who keep themselves underweight to achieve some ideal of beauty. A common thread in people (including men) with AN is some traumatic event that triggers need to be in control when life is out of their control. Weight is the one thing they CAN control. The weight loss is merely a symptom of a much larger problem.

1- sometimes it's only the labia

The main reason in the US people just see the two as different is because in the US we practice male circumcision and so think it's normal. Well in parts of Africa they practice female circumcision and think it's normal, when in fact both are equally messed up.
