When songs have lyrics this profound, its not about who's version you like listening to more. Waits version is the way its supposed to be. and thats worth alot of respect. Norah Jones is great, shes just not tom waits.
Before my girlfriend and I started dating we worked together. I always used to take her route home with her, even though it was 45 minutes longer. Yes that's one of the reasons I love this song.
@LilyLovesLabyrinth That's so good to hear! Thanks for the update. Great song, eh? Glad you were able to find comfort in a time of uncertainty. We're playing tomorrow night, we'll do this song and dedicate it to and your dad.
@geoson4582 Wow, thank you!:) I'm sure you will do it justice, and a song is always better when there's some sort of emotional tie behind it, good luck!:)
reminds me of those times when you don't want to go home just yet, so you purposefully take the back roads in order to make your time last a little longer
@alice88wa Yup, you're absolutely correct. My mistake. How embarrassing, he says sheepishly. Um, well, he would've still brought magic to it had he not written it... ;)
This picture is also used in Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold video. No idea as to who used it first. She is really worth a listen too. I like his version better than Nora's, but I like her too.
Was just jamming to Tom on my ipod tonight. Bone Machine is so interesting. Just like you can't eat just one Oreo cookie, you can't listen to just one Tom Waits song or album. And on that note I shall go to the Goin' Out West video and then on to A Little Drop of Poison and then onto Down Town Train and then Cocolate Jesus and then and then and then................Toooooooom. Wait for meeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!! =)
Listen to Leonard Cohen's early voice... it's what cigarettes and booze to do to one's voice. I don't care... I wish I could spend just one day with Tom Waits... I could die the following day and my glowing spirit would sprout many a tree!!! I spend way too much time alone; god, I need a road trip!!!
@SunriseFresh Exactly* He can still sing plainly, even in his old age. I love the way he sings regardless. He has an amazing voice to me. I wake up with Tom Waits and go to sleep with him on my MP3 every day.
I think some of you are confusing "voice being gone" with "Voice being real" I think Tom hanks has a voice that goes very well with his music. It has soul. More than Norah Jones in my opinion.
@wsx347538 He's touring through Europe currently. He was in Dublin last time I checked the dates. There's a rumor going around that he is working on another album [= and maybe with the coming of it, he will do another tour. I wish he would come back to the US. I will demand him a million times until it happens *sigh*.

My dad got into a car accident two nights ago.
He's the strongest man I've ever known, but over the past few years he's been through a lot, and it's been hard.
After he got in the accident, he tried to make sure that my brother, sister, and I didn't find out about it.
He didn't want us to be disappointed,
But we aren't. We just want to see him get better.
In a way, he tried to take the long way home.
This song has comforted me, and I know he'll be okay.
Thank you Tom Waits.
