How in the world do you do that giant skyrocket leap and downthrust as a one hit kill?!?! I remember the downthrust... but it NEVER did anything more than "regular" damage... at least... in the arcades ~I~ played in. And the jump rarely went so high...

@greytale Hold the jump button to jump that high after running and hold the attack button for the downthrust. I don't think there is a downthrust with regular damage; what might be happening is that you are not holding the attack button and are doing a regular air attack instead.

Tyris for President in 2012! This game is one of my all-time favorites.

I remember one time there was this list about the greatest videogame weapons of all time. I remember thinking without the "Goomba Shoe" from SMB3 and Brown Dragon from Goldenaxe, the list would be worthless - too bad it didn't have either. =(

Gilius Thunderhead's (The Dwarf) Axe is gold in the Arcade version. Hence where the name of the game comes from.

It actually refers to Death Adder's axe, not Gillius'.

Gilius's is more like a steel axe. The golden axe is the one you need to get from Death Adder. And an axe made of gold would not be a very good weapon, though. :P

I also liked how there are more scenes of villagers getting abused in the arcade version. Details such as the giant turtle's moving eye adds to the richness of the game.

I like how the arcade version shows Alex getting beaten to death in the beginning. In the Sega Genesis version you only see a speech bubble from your character talking about Alex's death and you seeking revenge.

I like the changes they made between stages 2 and 3. It makes a lot more sense to get the red dragon in the beginning of the stage. On the Genesis version it only appears at the end of the second stage and I was always pissed that I never actually got to use it.

Brilliant game. The PC version comes close in terms of graphics, and the Genesis in terms of sound (and both have expanded levels and a new boss confrontation). Love the Vs. mode too... but the arcade is supreme!

One of the many things I love about the game is the sound effects. They picked up sound bits from the movies around at the time such as Conan the Barbarian, Commando, American Werewolf In London (Crowd Screams)and Rambo.

oh hell the genesis version strained so much outta this game. there definitely is a difference. with all the new ideas of downloading "arcade" quality of this game, like street fighter 2 for xbox360, why not do the same for this game?

the "AGGGHHHHH!" sound that the two bosses make at the end of the first level (and elsewhere in the game) was sampled from the end of the first conan movie when one of the bad guys get's a huge spike trap driven through his torso. Check out the movie if you don't believe me. Just a bit of geek trivia for you. :)

There's a few others in the game... another one from Conan is when the skeletons are killed. The sound is from when Conan decks a priest after asking him about his robe. Watch first Blood Part 1 (Rambo) again, and there's a few there too. Where the cop falls out the chopper when trying to shoot Rambo 'aaaarghhh aaarghh ooaaaghh!!' and when the red headed cop walks into a trap in the forest. I'm surprised Sega didnt spot these after 20 years...

Also if you play IK plus on the Amiga you will notice a lot of the sound fx are sampled from the Bruce Lee movie "Enter the dragon" a bit more geek trivia for ya.

really? of course they did.

the Genesis game ROM was only 4 megabits, the arcade ROM was 24 megabits - therefore, the arcade has 6 times more data, the Genesis is 1/6th of the arcade.

the graphics, animation, sound were downgraded significantly for Genesis.
