As far as I understand, mantids' nervous systems are wired to make them strike out at anything that comes near them so they can catch a tasty bug (they're overall slow-moving critters, so fast reflexes are necessary to get any lunch for them). They're otherwise harmless to humans if you just observe them.

If it were a human, however, we would probably be more likely to get bitten by it because our skin is bare.

The cat probably was okay because of its fur being in the way of its skin, so the mantis might only go as far as eating a mouthful of hair. Lol.
