@andy9ajc9 haha, that is where we stayed! oh, I'm way too old to still be marching, but I did march SCV cyms 01,02, and now I'm the cymbal tech at Legends
@sliqjonz Cool .. I'll have to dig through my old tapes .. I might have some footage of 01 and 02 around somewhere .. Been a Vanguard fan since I can remember ..
I was on support staff this year. Every time the corps performed this it was better than the last. One commenter here said he didn't think he could have paid enough to be front row, well I tell you, I was there (at finals and many of the other performances), and it truly was priceless. The SCV is a class act and their sense of history, and dare I say respect for 'Tradition' is unsurpassed in DCI.
for the first time, in a while, i had to lower the volume on my computer down b/c the sound was so intense, i thought my speakers would burst, and honestly, i thought i would too........
This is in Rome NY, a week before East .. its a transfer from an old Sharp HI8mm camera, its been compressed a few times along the way .. trust me, the sound was there when I taped it .. when I caught up with them the day of East in PA they were working this section to improve tone control and quality
Once of my greatest drum corps memories is getting to sit in the middle of this horn lines arch while they ran this piece.. It was stupid hot and I still got chills. I think its one of the greatest things ever done by a drum corps.
We didn't really play the exact same thing, but we played (saxes) the mello line and had some flutes and calrinets added into the chords. The chord structure and rhythms we played were the same just with brass and woodwinds.
I love, for me at least, that you don't even realize this amazingly slow crescendo and push into triple forte... and you don't even realize how darn loud it is until the climatic cut off... and even through a not so great quality YouTube video the chord still rings in your ears after the cut off... eerie and spine chilling.
this song is my favorite song ever... it can really make you cry esspecially if you think of something sencative to you... but hearing it drum corp style is awesome
This is what Drum Corps is all about!!!! What a beautifully haunting sound! Thank you for posting this. Words cannot express....thank you for making me cry.
...and to think I was there for this too. Still got the goosebumps even tho you're right, being 20ft away was indescribable. I hardly dared breathe! Sanks CDB
this right here... this is why I live music every day of my life, why I teach it, its the very essence of what it takes to set that explosion off inside of you emotionally for music... and every reason why I want to give every kid in my band class the gift of music.
I had the privilege of hearing this played right in front of me in 2000 in Texas outside of the Alamo Dome. We (Southwind) played our ballad from that year (Legends of the Falls) for SCV, then SCV played Adagio and Send in the Clowns for us. It was the most amazing thing I have ever heard.
i played adagio for strings in highschool at sharyland high school in mission tx my senior year and i would get goosebumps EVERY time at the big section, it was awesome playing it at the alamodome, we did SCVs 2000 show, good show to end ur highschool career on before college band :)
The Cavaliers have come up against this the past few years, I feel. Their shows have been, of course, dynamite, and they've been winning, but there's a richness in the music that's missing since they abandoned great composers to focus on in-house composition. The music has grown kind of one-dimensional, like something written on a keyboard. Thoughts?
It is nearly impossible for a staff writer at a drum corps to produce musical material of this depth, and once we've heard Samuel Barber, it's hard to get us back on the farm.
I sense that most of the original works for drum corps simply can't hold a candle to the quality and depth of expression a great work brings, assuming it is arranged well (like here, for instance!). A drop-dead gorgeous moment like this is so dependant on the genius of Samuel Barber, who was on a completely different plane than even a top-grade brass arranger.
Breathtaking, and it provokes a thought: as much as I love the idea of drum corps hiring their own composers to create something original, the problem is they're up against Samuel Barber, John Adams, Shostakovich & Co., musically speaking.
such a sick ass ballad. and that says something especially comin from a blue devil(BD Sop 98-01). they performed it well. Thats all i should say. oh yea, FTV anyway!
nope .. recorded in Rome NY a few days before East .. it was so sweet to be about 20 feet from them .. the video doesn't even come close to the sound live ..
Wow....still gives me bumps to this day!!!!! What happened to the years after?

it takes genius to take something called adagio for STRINGS and do it with brass...
I don't wanna admit to damp eyes... but yeah...
I heard them do that in one of there shows that year.
It was incredible then and it's so nice to hear it again...
the chord progressions at 2 minutes in... jeez...

Our band played this arrangement for our 2008 show, but we sounded terrible compared to SCV.

you didn't play that arrangement unless you marched only brass.

Let's put it this way; they played a similar enough arrangement to have to pay the SCV arranger (I think it was Key Poulan) or he could've sued them.
