Morrison is still one of my heroes, because I believe him to be a decent poet and fantastic performer. All I'm saying is, the guy couldn't play a single instrument. Teenage, pseudo-intellectual stoners see Jim Morrison and instantly think he was the coolest thing on two-legs - but it's all an aesthetic-looks thing. Had Jim Morrison been born with Mick Jagger's face, The Doors wouldn't have had half the success. They had three 'classic albums'... from 1967 to 1971, The Stones had a slew of 5.
It's blatant The Who are superior musicians to The Doors - history has proven this. The latterly mentioned band failed to release decent material without Morrison, whilst members of The Who have proven themselves time and time again as fantastic independent musicians. Jim Morrison was undoubtedly a smart, compelling human being, but I think many people are confusing his external charisma and rebellious attitude with 'musical talent'. In that aspect, the man was very limited.
Jim wasn't trying to be the best, he just wants to write poetry and do music. Maybe when you guys can write or sing as well as Jim Morrison, then only you can criticize him.
@havepie The Doors did not survive long enough as a band to prove anything. They were still growing in popularity. The Doors never reached superstardom. The Doors were still playing theaters and clubs when it all ended. They were starting to gain popularity and would have started selling out arenas but not stadiums. Very few bands in 69/70 were selling out arenas and stadiums. The Stones were doing it and The Who were doing it. 70/71 Led Zep just started doing it.
@canaryman69 I'm not saying The Who isn't a great band, I like their music, just not as much as I like The Doors music. It's a matter of opinion, just because The Who might have been more main stream doesn't make The Doors any less great of a band.
@xobadromancexo The Beatles most successful and influential. The Stones deserve the title Greatest Rock n Roll Band, (personally I think The Who). The Who are the greatest live band. Led Zep most popular. Elvis entertainer of the 50's. Beatles band of 60's. Led Zep band of 70. Michael Jackson entertainer 80. Garth Brookes entertainer 90. In order of importance in rock, The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Led Zep.
@xobadromancexo that is fine to like The Doors more than The Who, but the fact is when it comes to impact and longevity and influence and live performances The Who is in the top 4 of all rock bands, PERIOD. Cheers
@xobadromancexo when the Doors ended at that time they were still playing small clubs and theaters while The Who played stadiums and arenas. The Doors music is basic compared to The Who. The Doors are good but not great and they are overrated. The Doors did not survive long enough to be in the great or supergroup category. The Who are considered to be the greatest live band and one of the most influential. Only The Beatles, Stones, Who and Led Zep are the big four, and 5th maybe Floyd.
@canaryman69 OH man you so wrong about The Doors. Theres absolutely no way that Doors overrated or basic comparing to the other bands, you just simply didn't listen their music enough. And definitely Jim Morrison would in top five songwriter/ singer.
@MrBryterLayter lol, Jim Morrison would struggle to get into the top 10, he's nothing compared to 3 of the 4 beatles, most of the stones, and that's before you look at the Who (Tommy anyone!) and of course Dylan, Hendrix and a host of others....The Doors never reached their potential because ole jim was too busy getting wasted.
The Doors were everything, jim mad a new style and he had a very unique voice, just his screams can tell what great he was as a showman,as a rock star. RIP Jim Morrison
The Who they have been active longer they were actaully more famous than the doors and they have more personality plus they had the best drummer keith moon (!946 - 1978) and the best bassist john entwistle (1944 - 2002) The who also were much louder and much aggressive and moon was halariouse.
@windmiller129 but you must admit that the greatest scream ever in the rock n roll history is made by Roger! in 'Wont Get Fooled Again'.In my opinion, Roger and Jim are the best frontmen ever!
The WGFA backing track comes from multi-tracks that can be found by cracking the Rock Band video game. The HILY vocals come from the center channel of a 5.1 mix on a Doors DVD.

The Who no question. I love the Doors too, especially Morrison because he is one of the best singers of all time.

I love them both almost equally...but Pete is just a genius!!! Can't not vote for the Who!!!
nonoetseb 1 year ago
@nonoetseb Pete Townshend is probably the greatest "all around" singer/songwriter/musician/showman/producer and only Paul McCartney comes close.
