  • Duromg the summer they need to add more service

  • Most people use their cars, the railroads dont make enough money to expand.

  • This railway network's services are very long-distant for a commuter rail (up to 200 km).

  • Actually, I'd reckon its most popular use is as a means of getting out to Long Island for the weekend. A lot of people take it out to the Hamptons on Friday afternoon and come back on Sunday evening. I doubt a whole lot of people take it all the way from the Hamptons to NYC and back every day.

  • Yeah, but still LIRR's a commuter rail network, even though it's not so frequently used by commuters. I found out that the service to Montauk is very infrequent. In our suburban rail network in Stockholm, there aren't any such infrequent extensions of normal services like this, most of your trains go to Patchogue (Speonk in the peak hours). I once visited Montauk and nearly missed the last train to the city centre.

P.S. Nice that a commuter rail uses intercity-like locomotives

  • By the way, which of your lines uses the c-3s?

  • Ah yes, I rode that train a number of times.

  • On a trip to NYC??

  • No, just East Hampton. It's a little family tradition of mine to take the train to East Hampton and get donuts at Dreesen's, a local donut shop. This train is actually departing Southampton going to New York.
