  • I love Sagan!

  • WIN!

  • i have never been so proud to be canadian.

  • Carl makes an interesting point nearing the end of the video... we spend more money on how to destroy others with our weapons then we do on how to fix what we have destroyed already... our planet

  • Dear Carl, Nothings changed really since you left. I write again in another 15 years and let you know what the story is. Cheers.

  • It's like watching an adult talk to a very small child

  • Man if there was one person I could ever sit down and spend 20 minutes with, it would be Carl. I'd learn more in those 20 minutes than I did in all my years in school. And I am a musician saying this, I'd rather sit with Carl than even my most beloved deceased idols of mine.

  • great man, ppl like him should be in governments, if governments would make any sense...

  • I kind of think that planets should be kept the way they are. I do think we should explore other worlds, I'm all for that! I'd love to see humans on other planets, but we must keep that planet from being contaminated. Bio-domes are a great idea, but with certain planets with thin or sparse atmospheres, you have to be careful about meteorites. If you had a bio-dome on Mars or The Moon, i.e., it would have to be VERY STRONG! Meteorites can move faster than bullets, and easily breach a bio-dome.

  • @KarbineKyle It's not a meteorite until it hits the ground.

  • Love that grin Carl does at the very end of the video, that's hilarious

  • Carl Sagan is Chuck Norris' father.

  • Wouldn't be "domes" on Mars too cold, or hard/expensive to heat so humans don't freeze up? What about underground facilities, like in Tatooine?

  • @LesPaul2006 Dome filled w/ greenhouse gases over a large excavated Tatooine cave... I like it!

  • Carl Sagan is my hero. This gets a thumbs u & favorite!

  • Awesome video - I am so glad to hear Carl Sagan, Challenging the Military Industrial Complex and to Push forward the Idea of a Better future. It's a shame someone like Mr. Sagan can no longer be with us, but all these Hawkish Military/Political Monsters are still amongst us.

  • Carl Sagan had the rare ability to bring a vision to the people, in a way so that they can actually imagine it and understand its purpose.

  • her panties were wet by the end

  • Man I am so glad to have learned of Sagan, he has the same passion for space I had when I was a kid, he is everything I want to be or have ever wanted to be.

  • Why not both?

  • He's got such a fantastic voice. I want him to read to my kids.

  • R.I.P

  • @ 0:54

Don't interrupt him you stupid pig fucker. You shouldn't even be allowed to talk to a man of this greatness.

  • Oh, wow, that was really funny. You got her good man, Sagan approves! Hahaha!

  • Sagan = Logic. Nothing more.

Ok. A "bit" more than a common logic ofc.

This is my personal first person, who I could believe like a "blind" blue-eyed person. Doesn't mean he is "divine". More like a amazing prophet (sorry my spelling).

  • If only logic were common, the world would be a much better place.

  • carl sagan=light unto the nations.

  • What would Carl be saying today when the USA is spending near a Trillion a year on "Defence"!!.

  • This interview is HISTORIC!!! It documents what is SOOOO important to remember: End of the 90s there was no serious strategic thread - worldwide. Never ever forget that. Means, there were industries and intitutions about to lose their justification for existence (intelligence, mil, pol). Think, what happened 8 years after this interview was produced.

  • it is sad how people cannot understand this very simple paradox. great comment!!!

  • Why, why, WHY did he have to die of a rare disease?

  • It's so awesome he translated to Celsius off the cuff.

  • @greg5566

dude, at 21 someone should know how to do that. Not dissing Sagan at ALL, my basement is filled with his work and face lol. It's just not hard.

  • @greg5566 such a champion

  • @greg5566

It's pretty commonly known how hot Venus is in Celsius

  • @greg5566 It's called memorization...

  • @purpleproductionftw

No, more like approximation. If he memorized it, he would have said 482°C...

  • Carl Sagan = hero

  • He couldn't have really went much further with that question. The moon and mars are mostly engineering feats at best. Everyone who really knows about interplanetary space travel knows that this is fallaciously leading small children to believe they will live in outer space someday. Nobody I know says they want to be an astronaut when they grow up anymore. NASA is letting Hubble deorbit from the sky next year. The shuttle is being withdrawn from service with no REAL advanced replacement for it.

  • The idea isn't that we'll live there soon. It's that we'll have to leave here. It is, as he says, a long term plan.

  • EXCELLENT.

    CARL SAGAN is an inspiration.

  • He could've went on a lot further on that question. I absolutely hate it when people say that, and that kind of thinking must be erradicated by transmitting informed opinions like Carl Sagan's.

  • What do you mean ?

  • What I meant with my poor english was that that whole "we should fix the earth before going to space" opinion is a very dangerous one, and Carl could've gone a little further in his argumentations to make sure that people understand that.

  • I entirelly agree with you. Not only is dangerous but also stupid and fallacious.

  • Yes... and after writing Pale Blue Dot (which is chiefly about that), he could have presented lots of better arguments during that interview...

  • oh yes...that´s funny.. lolololol

i have to talk to myself, nobody added any comment for 2 months.

  • now thats funny!

  • its not funny hehe she said umm hum? so what? its a typical English (colloquial) way to express agreement or understanding.

not sure if you got that being portuguese

    if not then ...well Desculpa

    :)

  • In every part of the world , hum hum is a sign of agreement or uderstanding. I am not that retarded.

What i think its funny is that she agrees that her question is a fallacy. See the video and you will understand. But its just a small detail, dont worry much about that. Listen to Carl

  • perhaps you just have an "easier" sense of humor than me. I meant no offense by my statement and defiantly did not mean for you to think i mean you where retarded, so i apologies.

    peace

    brian

  • p.s. to be perfectly honest i dont think she understood what he meant at that point haha she was just going along with it....that! i do find funny.

  • Ya ..that is what i said ( or at least try to ) by another words or did not you understand ?

    i also love peace

    Vítor

  • Sacred, she probably asked that question because it is a common question asked. I do the same on my show.

  • :) i know and you really shouldn't, its a starting point for a boring interview. Why would you waste time asking a man of his stature questions that have been answered so many times already.

    peace

    brian

  • When she asks « why dont we fix on our planet and undo the damage we done» Carl Sagan says that her question is a fallacy and she says«hum hum». That's funny

  • The question of justifying the expenditure on space and exploration is a very easy and obvious question to pose - what is less obvious, but should be a more pressing question for the human race is how can we NOT afford to invest in the future by paving the way to a second home for the human race.

Overpopulation, global warming, exhausting natural resources before new alternatives can be found, war, desease - all of these things can be negated or eased by carefully strategised space programmes

  • Mars doesn't have a strong enough magnetic field to protect an atmosphere from the solar winds. I guess they didnt know that back in 1993.

  • They did, the thing is if you build an atmosphere thick enough then an Ionosphere is created which does effectively the same thing as a magnetosphere.

  • woah. I didn't know that. I just learned.

  • The last answer in this video is genius.

  • Great man.

    Much missed.

  • That's only if there is life, but, Sagan did say that "Mars belongs to the Martians" Even if they are only Microscopic. But that descision isn't ours to descide right now.

  • I think Carl Sagan would have agreed with you JealousInquiry. He only advocated terraforming for *lifeless* planets.

Carl Sagan said in COSMOS chapter "Blues For a Red Planet", that "If there is life on Mars, then I believe we should do nothing to disturb that life. Mars then, belongs to the Martians, even if they are microbes."

Later in life he also spoke out against speciesism.

  • Carl Sagan.Wir werden dich niemals vergessen.

  • Carl Sagan. Emme koskaan unohda sinua. (same in Finnish)

  • Such a brilliant man. His voice is hipnotic, and I think that really effects how people listen to him.

  • one genius, oh, I hate this world has so few , few people like him....probably this is the reason this world is like is

  • and the saddest thing is, none of them will run for presidential office or even be involved in politics.

  • maybe because they are working against them.

  • everyone is like him, some people lack the tools or maybe initiative but it is all possible

  • If i was a woman I would pay for him to get me pregnant and hope my child to be as frikking intelligent. Also hope some of his brain rubbs onto me in the process.

  • I don't know if that's funny or frightening.

  • lol...but i totally hear you

    Sydumizar.. Sagan is God !

  • Intelligence, humor, charisma and the guy was good looking in his 20's. I'm sure sperm banks would pay him a shitload of money!

  • lmfao.

  • Hook at all the + thumbs-ups your comment got. I think many people would like to see his genes outnumbering other genes.

Sadly, it takes no brains to procreate. Indeed, the social landscape seems to show that the smartest, kindest people tend to have fewer kids.

  • Sagan died too early :(

  • Indeed he did.

  • I agree with Sagan. We should be exploring space/planets because, eventually, man will have to - out of a NEED - begin to leave Earth on a regular basis.

How much iron can we pull from Earth, after all, before it implodes? - for example.

  • i love this man...he is da man!! Carl rules!!!

  • Thanks for posting!

  • Also, I wonder how much of that 14 Billion for NASA is actually earmarked for military-related purposes. The actual non-military-related funding for NASA probably amounts to far less.

Got more video? Don't be bogarting the Sagan dude.

  • Wooha! New Carl video! Thanks man!
