Since the "M72" in this flick is reloadable, it might actually be the "M190" training version. Also, comets are made of dust and ice, so it doesn't make sense that a "comet" would create a green forcefield. Stephen King should have come up with some other explanation. Yeah, it's revealed to be a UFO, but they call it a "comet" at the beginning. They just need to call it something other than a "comet" because it doesn't make sense. Ah, but who am I to demand that things make sense in this flick?
Not sure if I mentioned this before, but that OD green rocket launcher is a Vietnam War-era American-made 66mm M72 LAW (Light Anti-tank Weapon). It was also used in Falling Down. It's collapsible, disposable, recoilless, and has a flip-up leaf sight. The fact that it was made to be used once and thrown away displays a faulty design concept. Vietnamese saboteurs would collect the empty rocket tubes, fill them with grenades, and turn them into booby traps.
@IggyHazard That reminds me that the Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, despite being a simulator, the M72 LAW is reloadable.
You mentioned that IT IS if you are using training rounds, but not with real ammo, unless you bring back the launcher tube to the factory or the armory to get it reloaded. Am I right or wrong?
The german Panzerfausts of WWII era were also reloadable if you bring back the tube to the factory, there they attach a fresh grenade.
@Xerxes1688 That seems so unnecessarily complicated compared to the more practically designed reloadable launchers like the Carl Gustav and the various versions of the RPG.
@IggyHazard I know, but the Panzerfausts were extremely cheap, so why reloading. Just grab another launch tube.
Although the germans realized this after the war, and turned back to the non-disposable launchers like the PzF 44 and then the Panzerfaust 3, although they dol have some disposable launchers like the Armburst and the MATADOR.
How can you not find death by melon funny? In fairness, my American hometown of crazy conservatives does have a diner run by the head of the local NRA chapter. I'm pretty sure he does have a secret room full of weapons and army surplus supplies.
I absolutely LOVE the intro song, this is by far my fav review of yours so far john. I saw this movie super late at night and thought it was just silly cause I was super tired, glad to see that it wasn't just me. Truely a fantastic reviewer you are :DD
The anti-technology message of this movie doesn't really come across 100% clearly since we find out at the end that it was aliens that used our own machines as a weapon to exterminate us. That's more anti-alien (xenophobia much, Stephen?) than anti-technology. It's an economical concept, though, and unique for alien warfare. Why waste your own resources when you can turn your enemies' vehicles and motorized tools again them? There's another King film called 'Trucks' that sucks much worse.
It's funny. Stephen King is good at writing but I think he should of been the one who wrote the script instead of directing the film. He also should let an experienced director do his adaptations and help the director of what the scenes should look like in his mind. I watched The Shining miniseries and was made because of Kings disliking with the film version, he and the director put in one more major element which fitted the novel even better the REAL Overlook Hotel (the Stanley Hotel in rea
Ahhhh... a true classic. I think I may have asked for this one a while back? Saw it at the drive-in on its initial release... piece o crap then, piece o crap now. Found it in the Wal-Mart bins for $4. Thanks for the review... you should simply roll through a ton of the Stephen King films that you haven't covered yet, both good and bad. Cheers!
Great review again and again. This film has to be one of the best comedy/horrors ever made. Stephen King really should have directed and starred more in his films. Pure class. Some great liners "we made youuuu" "I'll kill youuuuuuuuu" "What! what do u want!" well played at the end to acdc. I heard rumours that this film won 3 oscars. Amazing what you can find out with a little time
I used to subscribe to Fangoria in the 80's . When this came out, they did a cover story and King had a beer in his hand in every picture on the set. It came out the same day as "Aliens" and my brother dragged me to see both on that Friday. I was scared to see it until about 15 minutes into the flick and the theater was rolling with laughter. Can't get enough Shitcase! Cheers from Missouri...
i could just be a twisted, crazy bit but I've never found anything stephen king did 'scary'. I mean the only thing frightening in the Shining was Jack Nicholson, seriously. I was wondering though, what is the best shitty death scene in your opinion? I think the plumber from Amytiville Horror 4 drowning in random black goo takes the cake for me. =)
haha, King may have been stoned while he was making this... but what if he wasn't? Then it's just an example of his twisted madness :P Still at least he had good visuals and the right band for the soundtrack. My god, he does look mad in that trailer too.
I never saw this the whole way through. I turned it off after that annoying newly-wed couple survives after almost being crushed. The woman that kept yelling "Curtis! Curtis!" pissed me off. I also didn't like how Emilio Estevez doesn't really bother acting. The AC/DC soundtrack was good, though. Thanks for sitting through it, because I was still curious how it ended.
Switch evil trucks for huge monsters and you get feast, bad acting, and lots of lols equals good movie, shame about the other two, cars randomly flying from nowhere to kill people, hiding in a building from monsters when the wall behind the randomly falls down catapalting a midget onto the top of a building and the third WOW thats bad its your duty as shitcase cinema to review these movies
Stephen King did a fair few of these "cars come to life" stories.
I'm fairly sure that King decided to direct this because the it's such a ridiculous script that he could just play it for laughs. I mean, the guy has written hundreds of books - and he chose this. He's either a complete idiot or he did it for a laugh.
i watch half of this film once but i fell asleep half way through so you must tell me jhon did they kill lisa she pisses me off in this and the simpsons
Tehnical Note: That rocket launcher is an M-72 LAW (Light Anti-tank Weapon), a US-issue 66mm launcher from the Vietnam War era. Nobody in this movie uses it properly. It's meant to be fired from the shoulder, not the hip. It has a flip-up sight. The M-72 was also featured in 'Falling Down' and lots of Vietnam movies. The DVD cover actually looks cool with that depressing gray sky in the background. That topless military vehicle has an M-60 mounted on it (another Vietnam War-era weapon).
There's a made-for-TV movie called 'Trucks' which is a semi-remake of 'Maximum Overdrive' except it's only killer trucks and it's not nearly as much fun to watch. Plus, it has a lame semi-subtle anti-technology left-wing message (Stephen King is a pinko if you didn't already know). As for "Overdrive," the idea of it being a comet is just ludicrous because comets have specific physical qualities that define them uniquely as comets and Rhea-M doesn't possess these traits. "Energy field" would work
this is like happy wheels the movie

Also, are you doing a Stephen King marathon since you did three movies that are related to him in some way?
