I almost bought a Pacer when they came out. I was looking for an economical car with lots of room and a smooth ride.

Believe me, the Pacer had all that. The problem was: it was UGLY. I just couldn't see myself driving this in public. Maybe after dark, but that's it.

My buddy's dad had a 1975 AMC Pacer...white and olive green two-tone paint with a white interior. Man, that thing was bad-ass...a fish bowl on wheels!!

Those Japanese cars were probably pretty good, though I hardly ever see them on the road anymore. I owned a '71 Z600 that was great at car shows but it was a pile of junk outside of that, and parts are hard to get.

I see 70's American cars on occasion but almost always they're just baby'd weekend cars. Though I'll see an Omni\Horizon on occasion and it wouldn't shock me that they sold well thanks to being simple and reliable. I know this because I own one.

Want to change the plugs in a Pacer? Okay, but first loosen the motor mounts, jack up the engine and then use a ratchet with a universal joint to get at the plugs nearest the firewall. Sound easy? I don't think so. Decent, well designed engine, but surrounded by a hideous car.

@zeekwolfe The Pacer was designed for a rotary engine at one point but they shoe-horned in a V6 instead.

@ramblergarage And even then they weren't perfect, though my main problem with Mazda is their Poke-styling, they were making pretty nice cars but they had to slap on over-exaggerated Chevy Cavalier grins, even the Miata looks bizarre now.
