@chevyfan1251992 They are all "Chevelles". There were three Chevelle trim levels for 1974, base model Chevelle Malibu and Chevelle Malibu Classic, both available in two door, four door, or station wagon, and the "sport" model, Chevelle Laguna Type S-3, two door only.
I think the idle is about normal for '74. Emission controls were being added by the truckload between '70 and '74 and one of the results was that normal idle speed was increased from around 600 to about 800 RPM in order to comform to the tighter emission controls. Seems counterintuitive, too--you'd think the engine should actually run slower to make fewer emissions. '74 was not one of the better years for automobiles--in fact one of the worst.
@VictrolaJazz I took all the emission controls off my 74 when I put headers and a full dual exhaust on it.I ran it through the emissions and it passed with flying colors!! A couple cops tried busting me for it but I told them it was a 1974,a year before the cataletyc converter and showed them the Air Team report and they always let me go.
Years back I bought a rust bucket 74 Malibu an to this day it was the best car I ever owned.I bought it from old people for 525.00,had it for 4 years, put 90,000 miles on it and sold it for 475.00.That old car would start in 30 below zero weather even with the screwed up choke and the few times it did break down it always got me home first.
Ah this brings back memories , had two 1974 one was like this one but with the sport interior / white swivel seats bla bla bla , you have yourself one nice ride .
i had a 77 malibu classic landau,saphire blue clear coated 3x`s,craga classic rims,dual exaust,awesome alpine stereo,just a stock 305 2brl,it was a very reialiable car,167,000 miles when i sold it,ran cherry,started realy good in winter -20 degree winter.i`d drop into low 1 n tromp on it ,it cackled
@Hazus00 Did you have headers or were those the exhaust manifolds. One thing I can tell you (unless you figured it out for yourself) is that car was not built for headers. Not only did I have to take the starter down but I had to beat the header on the passenger side to get it to fit around the frame. And I always used Hooker headers which are known to fit.
My first car was a Chevy Chevelle I had while in College at Southern Illinois back in the early 80's. It was a great ride between Chicago and Carbondale on Intrestate 57. It rode so smooth. I had a CB in it and would pegged the needle right at 80mph back when the maximum speed limit was 55mph. I could make Cardondale to Chicago in just under 5-hours It was the party vehicle. Believe it or not, I'll occasionaly dream about that car.
whats the difference between a chevelle and malibu?
Zomgdevil 1 year ago
@Zomgdevil Nothing really except for maybe some options.
thissitesucks74 1 year ago
@thissitesucks74 Mine had no options except for the 350.It didn't even have power brakes.
thissitesucks74 10 months ago
@Zomgdevil nothing until 1973.Thats when they came out with the Laguna.

@thissitesucks74 Chevelle was 2 door only*
chevyfan1251992 4 months ago
@chevyfan1251992 No, it wasn't. You could get a 2 door, 4 door, or a station wagon.
Hazus00 2 months ago
@Hazus00 Damn, that's right. I've seen wagon pictures before. I've never seen a 4 door Chevelle after the A body was redesigned though.

@chevyfan1251992 Trust me, they're out there.
Hazus00 2 months ago
@Hazus00 Does it (the 4 door option) apply to the Chevelle trim or just the Malibu classic?

A great video to watch. That's one clean Chevelle. I had a '74 that I drove for 15 years. I also bought a '77 to restore, but ended up selling it.

Don't have the car anymore. But, I remember doing this video. It wasn't completely warmed up. The choke was still on a bit.
