I was just an 8 year old kid when I saw this game but I was a huge Jets fan. I mean I went bananas one time when I found a "Richard Todd In Action" card in a bubble gum pack lol. I actually wish they still wore these uniforms rather then the Joe Namath versions they wear today. I realize I'm probably alone in that regard lol.
Thanks for posting this. This season was probably the first I vividly remember of watching the Jets. This was definitely an upset, but the Jets had some very good teams in the 80s done in by ownership and their move from Shea to the swamps of NJ. Guys like McNeil and Klecko could never stay healthy. Not to mention Walt Michaels blowing a gasket on the team plane on the way back to NY from LA in front of ownership because he thought Al Davis called him in the locker room at halftime.
You could could make a very good case that the Raiders had the best team in the NFL in 1982 as well as 1983. They should've replaced the Steelers as the dominant team in the AFC if not NFL in the 80s. This game was a major upset.
Twenty-nine years later it still makes me sick to watch this game. We were the better team, no doubt, and we should have won this game. We would've probably beaten Miami the next week in LA, and that would've set up a Super matchup with the 10-2 Redskins. We all know how that one turned out a year later!
What happens near the end of the video? McNeil fumbles with about a minute left, but then you re-play Plunkett's INT with 2:40 left. Then the game ends. What really happened at the end?
Plunkett threw 2 INTs to Lance Mehl. Due to pause/record issues I did not get the second one so for the sake of continuity I did the edit. I'm sure many noticed but you were the first to comment on that aspect of the clip.
@boxingjerapah no doubt about it bro. The Raiders were the best team in the league that year. They blew it plain and simple. I remember this loss to the Jets. I was devastated. Course, the following year the Raiders crushed the Skins in the Super Bowl!
Yeah, the 'fumble', along with the defense's inability to contain Freeman McNeil or Wesley Walker, the overall ineffective running of Marcus Allen and those two brain-fart interception tosses by Plunkett are the reasons the Raiders lost this game.... the fumble was just a small part of their demise..
wow the Jets should wear those uniforms sometimes they were pretty bad ass!

That's what Al Davis gets for moving the OAKLAND Raiders to LA-LA land. Never got into the Raiders after they moved back to Oakland in 95.

Man, that 'fumble' might have been the difference in back to back Super Bowls. Miami would've gotten their butts kicked in the Coliseum.

Holmes on the Jets should have been called for the penalty on the play before the fumble.
