Thank you, Andrew, for this, Stealers Wheel, and everything else. There ARE good musicians out there now, just not the ones promoted by profit and lack of soul (read, standard music companies/exploiters). Thank GOD for the internet and free sourcing.
I wasn't aware that Andrew had passed away last year until I came here to listen to this song. I had been looking at some videos with Andrew and Linda Ronstadt, and remembered this song from my High School days.
I'm pretty sure that "thing" Andrew is playing hasn't been seen in 25 years. Great music....great decade....its a shame most anyone under the age of 40 has no clue what a fantastic time it was in the 70s to have so much great music! If I had my way, I'd turn the clock back to 1970....when I was 5....just to relive ALL the artists hits! RIP AG
I'm 48 and I think all the people that think music is crap now don't realize that music is not the problem...they are!!! OPEN YOUR MIND! There is TONS of amazing new music if you look hard enough!!!
@Veggamattic I am 43 and agree that there are "some" good things going on out there musically, but the radio is dominated by crap. Gaga, Katy Perry, Keisha, Rhianna? Really? That is crap.
I'm only 14 and I haven't heard much from Andrew Gold but, the songs that I have heard are amazing. They're upbeat but, at the same time meaningful and clean-sounding. I wish I were born in 1954, so I would live through The Beatles, Andrew Gold and Queen!
I was watching a TV movie where one of the characters was a misunderstood teen and the title to this song just FLASHED to me after 25 ears of not hearing it. I came to YouTube if course and was enthralled by Andrew Gold's passionate performance of a legit classic of the time. What a lonely boy indeed.
The '70s and '80s had some incredible pop music but not since late '80s, early '90s at the latest. Probably a by-product of today's information age, too many choices and watered down talent.
I was born in 1970. 70's music has a unique charm for me. I remember listening to Lonely Boy on the radio while mom was driving me to my first day of school first grade. Or at least, I think I do.
i heard this song for the frst time today, and i was born in l95l......what a fantastic song...omg....it made me cry...and now i hear that andrew gold passed away..
rest in peace andrew and thank you for a beautiful song. <3
I adore this song, one of my absolute all time favourites! The best lines are 'Goodbye Mama, goodbye to you, goodbye Papa, I'm pushing on through' :')
I used to sit in the floor and play the 45 single of this song on an old console stereo over and over with headphones on. 1977...those were the best days ever to be a 12 year old kid living in the USA.
Very organic sound. Back in those days musicians could actually write/play/perform. If I can find anything negative to say, it'd be the guitarist could be "on" a bit more. He seems slightly off in his rhythm and missing notes in his solos. Love his black face amp and his strat's not a reissue.
I too, am 46 and find the music today is cheesey, sleesey, and violent in content and sounding! I will take this era of music all day long which had much more meaning and just felt better !!!!!!
I too, am 46 and find the music today is cheesey, sleesey, and violent in content and sounding! I will take this era of music all day long which had much more meaning and just felt better
Hey, not a dig, but what is this song really about? I mean, the kid is born, then when he is 3 his parents have a daughter who he is told to protect. Cut to him being 18, and he moves away from home. The sister gets married and has a son, and the cycle appears to repeat. What am I supposed to take away from this? Honestly not trying to be a dick here, I just think there must be some meaning I am completely missing. Thoughts?
Man, I had no idea that Will Ferrell was his bassist! Back when songwriters wrote mini-epic novels that had lyrical content and story lines that reflect and enhance the music.
@socrates1818 - Could be Mike Botts of Bread, who played on the record, but he didn't have curly/bushy hair from what I remember. Could be Rick Marotta maybe, looks like him. The bassist is definitely Kenny Edwards from the original record & the keyboardist is Brock Walsh from the original record also, but the guitarist isn't Waddy Wachtel, though this guy did a great job on the solo.
@kngscb - Assuming that wasn't sarcasm, the only reason I know this is because I grew up playing during the 70's & loved the music & the musicians who made it, but thanks for the compliment, I hope. (LOL)
@amybll Yes, things have changed. I am now hearing Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, and other hacks, for weeks at a time at age 39...and am thinking to myself...."Wow, this is crap"
@aftershock71 I hear what your saying !!! Didn't music have soooo much more class back then, everything wasn't about me being beautiful and perfect, music now is just so shallow and sleazy really. I'll take my oldies anyday, I'm 46 and I grew up with the best of the best, this song is just a platform for sooo many great , great songs, I could go on all night !!!!!!!!!!! And we did back then just listening .....................
@aftershock71 No one cares. If you really want to speak crap about modern artists, at least do it on their fucking videos. Sick of all of these "oh music nowadays is so shit."
Well news; YOUR parents (as a generation) thought that this stuff was sacrilegious bullshit. But you liked it, right? Well, as a teen at the moment, I actually like a lot of chart music, as well as old-school stuff. Don't focus on negative shit, if you're gonna complement a song just do it.
@aftershock71 ... And? What difference does it make if you're about to be a granddad? Or in fact when you listened to this song? I was just arsed off that people can't just leave artists alone; no matter where you go on youtube, there's always people slagging off modern music. It gets tiring after a while. Why don't you write something creative?
WHAT A TALENTED GUY! IF YOU CAN FIND HIS 60'S TRIBUTE ALBUM, 'FRATERNAL ORDER OF THE ALL' BUY IT. AMAZING PSYCHEDELIC SONGS, SPOT ON BEATLES IMPRESSIONS, ETC. LONELY BOY WAS ONE OF MY FAVE TUNES FROM THE 70'S. RIP ANDREW GOLD.

very big talent, but the song is kinda bein self centered because the kid falls apart when his parents have another kid. being an only kid isnt so great. i remember feeling this way when this song came out,& thought ,what i brat hes singin bout. now i know it was himself.. no thumb either way... tommy
@philandrews100 Hi, Doubt if thats Gilbert O'Sullivan on keyboards. More likely to be Brock Walsh. A great performance of Lonely Boy though. Fabulous lead guitar solo. I'd love to know the complete band lineup.

this was a true masterpiece and brings back great memories of growing up as a kid in the 70s! im truly sad for andrew, god bless his family! let his music rein forever!
I only just got 'Lonely Boy' on my Ipod a few weeks ago after having remembered it as a song from my youth and have fell in love with it again, then I find out Andrew Gold has just recently passed away fron cancer, i feel empty! My sympathies to his family, I wish you well, thank-you.
RIP Andrew............A wonderful......(but under appreciated) pop classic.....Yes...So moving in its own special way..................Came into its own on the Boogie Nights soundtrack.....There's a lot of the sadness of Dirk Diggler in there........
i always enjojed listening to the lyrics on this song when i heard it on the radio...sometimes you don't listen to the lyrics on songs properly but this one was differant..it told a story.
I couldn't believe that Andrew Gold had died on June 3rd! Now another one of my favorite artists has died! Sad! Andrew was a gracious man! One time I wrote a letter to him on his web-site and he wrote me back--it concerned the song "Learning the Game", from the album this song now playing came from: the 1976 album "What's wrong with this Picture". It was a beautiful remake of the Buddy Holly song! I only wish I had printed it out, but my printer was probably broken! I'll miss you Mr. Gold!
I never knew his name until he passed. To say he is in hell? Must be a youngster saying that but at 50 myself. I will never forget his name now. Its sad I had to learn his name now, this way. I knew the words to a few songs by heart. Cruzing to Lake Meed just out of Las Vegas in my 64 Grand Prix. If there was a hell, he won't be found there. CANT MAKE PEOPLE SING, BE HAPPY AND GO TO HELL.Its the Law.
@DC1Wolfman lindawatcher is no youngster, he"s a 46year old jerkoff that has nothin good 2 say bout anything ( look at his channel), a person like that should have thier ass kicked. to say that bout andrew. but u know how some pussys hide behind thier cruel words. regards tommy..were the same age

I love this video because it has the lines" goodbye mama, goodbye you, goodbye papa,I'm pushing on through"
On others, it is cut out,,,,but i think it is vital to the song
RIP Mr Gold, and thank you

RIP Andrew............A wonderful......(but under appreciated) pop classic.....Yes...So moving in its own special way..................Came into its own on the Boogie Nights soundtrack.....There's a lot of the sadness of Dirk Diggler in there........

Gold!

Great song and a very talented guy - I was sorry to read his Obituary in the paper today as I hadn't heard he had died.
I was a young teenager in the mid-70's and have always been fond of his album, "What is wrong with this picture", particularly this track.
Hang in there, Andrew, you will be missed but not forgotten.

There once was a man from LA
Who came to Lake Mead to play
With his booze, pot, beer and pills
He got plenty of thrills
Now at the Lake bottom he will stay
DROWNING PROHIBITED
That was a series of signs on the way to Lake Mead. Anyone want to guess what year that was?

I never knew his name until he passed. To say he is in hell? Must be a youngster saying that but at 50 myself. I will never forget his name now. Its sad I had to learn his name now, this way. I knew the words to a few songs by heart. Cruzing to Lake Meed just out of Las Vegas in my 64 Grand Prix. If there was a hell, he won't be found there. CANT MAKE PEOPLE SING, BE HAPPY AND GO TO HELL.Its the Law.
