  • RIP dude! great music!

  • Thank you, Andrew, for this, Stealers Wheel, and everything else. There ARE good musicians out there now, just not the ones promoted by profit and lack of soul (read, standard music companies/exploiters). Thank GOD for the internet and free sourcing.

  • Love the off beat in this tune....

  • Thanks so much for uploading this song. Brings back memories of Jr. High School and of better times in my life.

  • i had a cassette of this album played it so much it wore out.. rest in peace Andrew thx for all the great songs..

  • i'm 21 and i like this music much more then the music that is from today (something in english XD i'm dutch)

  • No, thats not Mike Botts on this version, not sure who it is here.

  • This is, is brilliant.

  • I wasn't aware that Andrew had passed away last year until I came here to listen to this song. I had been looking at some videos with Andrew and Linda Ronstadt, and remembered this song from my High School days.

    RIP

  • why do great people die so young i will never know

  • RIP Andrew...now you can continue to collaborate with Nicolette Larson.

    Love this song.

  • Can anyone confirm if that is Mike Botts on drums?

  • Timeless music and RIP with Jesus good man !!

  • I'm pretty sure that "thing" Andrew is playing hasn't been seen in 25 years. Great music....great decade....its a shame most anyone under the age of 40 has no clue what a fantastic time it was in the 70s to have so much great music! If I had my way, I'd turn the clock back to 1970....when I was 5....just to relive ALL the artists hits! RIP AG

  • Interesting... this live presentation is very close to the studio version - very tight! Great stuff.

  • im 16 and listening to this lol :)

  • I hate today's pop and hip music. It's terrible and just to put it, it shows no talent. I listen to more 60s through now rock and classic rock.

  • solid GOLD !

  • RIP Andrew I remember hearing this song so many years ago it brings back memories of my days back in Brooklyn.....

  • R.I.P. thank you for being a friend Andrew!

  • rip andrew gold.!!!!

  • rip andrew gold.!!!!!

  • Great generation of Music, very underappreciated! I think the post beatleshangover affected the 70s

  • Cool to hear this song again. Loved it in 1977. Beats all the repeated crap on the radio now.

  • I'm 48 and I think all the people that think music is crap now don't realize that music is not the problem...they are!!! OPEN YOUR MIND! There is TONS of amazing new music if you look hard enough!!!

  • @Veggamattic I am 43 and agree that there are "some" good things going on out there musically, but the radio is dominated by crap. Gaga, Katy Perry, Keisha, Rhianna? Really? That is crap.

  • My absolute favorite song of all time. The best hands down!!!!!!!

  • thanks for posting

one of my fav i was born in 1951

    R.I.P. Andrew

  • this is truly brilliant, love it!.. R.I.P. Andrew Gold

  • Boogie Nights!

  • RIP Andrew, thank you for the music...

  • I'm only 14 and I haven't heard much from Andrew Gold but, the songs that I have heard are amazing. They're upbeat but, at the same time meaningful and clean-sounding. I wish I were born in 1954, so I would live through The Beatles, Andrew Gold and Queen!

  • I was watching a TV movie where one of the characters was a misunderstood teen and the title to this song just FLASHED to me after 25 ears of not hearing it. I came to YouTube if course and was enthralled by Andrew Gold's passionate performance of a legit classic of the time. What a lonely boy indeed.

  • I used to hear this all the time when I was a kid and I listened to the lyrics but could never find the reason why the boy was lonely

  • One of my top five.. god bless him..

  • ANDREW ALSO BEAUTIFUL , SANG LIKE AN ANGEL.

  • love this song always makes me cry don't know why

  • The '70s and '80s had some incredible pop music but not since late '80s, early '90s at the latest. Probably a by-product of today's information age, too many choices and watered down talent.

  • I'm 13 and i love this music :D

  • I was born in 1970. 70's music has a unique charm for me. I remember listening to Lonely Boy on the radio while mom was driving me to my first day of school first grade. Or at least, I think I do.

  • i heard this song for the frst time today, and i was born in l95l......what a fantastic song...omg....it made me cry...and now i hear that andrew gold passed away..

rest in peace andrew and thank you for a beautiful song. <3

  • Andrew, we love you brau, thanks and RIP friend

  • one of the best songs of all time..thank you Andrew RIP friend

  • one of my favourite songs of all time..what a gr8 musician..writer...RIP Andrew..I will always love you and your music

  • History will prove itself and bear witness to the endless talent discovered in the 1970's and 1980's. Music has turned to crap these days

  • I adore this song, one of my absolute all time favourites! The best lines are 'Goodbye Mama, goodbye to you, goodbye Papa, I'm pushing on through' :')

  • I'm only 20 and mannn this is music!!

  • Good music takes me back to when I was about 11 or 12 a kid.

  • I used to sit in the floor and play the 45 single of this song on an old console stereo over and over with headphones on. 1977...those were the best days ever to be a 12 year old kid living in the USA.

  • love this R.I.P. Andrew Gold,,

  • Very organic sound. Back in those days musicians could actually write/play/perform. If I can find anything negative to say, it'd be the guitarist could be "on" a bit more. He seems slightly off in his rhythm and missing notes in his solos. Love his black face amp and his strat's not a reissue.

  • Harder than hell to play... but I'll get it. GREAT TUNE. Don't make 'em like this anymore.

  • whoops, repeat sounds like todays songs !

  • I too, am 46 and find the music today is cheesey, sleesey, and violent in content and sounding! I will take this era of music all day long which had much more meaning and just felt better

  • @kevieization I am an two year older dude, this is nice but back then there was a whole lot of crap 2! Like there is sweet music today!

You sound like my dad, he just liked jazz..

  • @kevieization I have to agree with you things have changed so much. Music isn't the same any more like when we were younger.

  • @kevieization Man i am 18 and I prefer this to pretty much anything released after the mid nineties

  • @MichaelDiBiasi Tags.

  • Hey, not a dig, but what is this song really about? I mean, the kid is born, then when he is 3 his parents have a daughter who he is told to protect. Cut to him being 18, and he moves away from home. The sister gets married and has a son, and the cycle appears to repeat. What am I supposed to take away from this? Honestly not trying to be a dick here, I just think there must be some meaning I am completely missing. Thoughts?

  • @orchidtender I thought this song was supposedly connected to Andrew Gold's actual life. If not, it must be a parable about life itself.

  • R.I.P. Andrew, God Bless.

  • Wow!, and I thought the 70s were crap!, I need to re-discover my music!

  • Boogie Nights!

  • RIP, you are part of my childhood Mr. Gold!

  • @njriley55

He died in his sleep from a heart attack.

Not as uncommon as you might think, nor is it indicative of a bad life style. It can happen for many reasons.

  • Man, I had no idea that Will Ferrell was his bassist! Back when songwriters wrote mini-epic novels that had lyrical content and story lines that reflect and enhance the music.

  • @RockMogul Now that's funny! I guess Kenny Edwards did look like Will in 1976.

  • Andrew Gold died in August 2010 R

    oi

  • WOW !...... hits your heart strings....

  • The drummer is great - who is it?

  • @socrates1818 - Could be Mike Botts of Bread, who played on the record, but he didn't have curly/bushy hair from what I remember. Could be Rick Marotta maybe, looks like him. The bassist is definitely Kenny Edwards from the original record & the keyboardist is Brock Walsh from the original record also, but the guitarist isn't Waddy Wachtel, though this guy did a great job on the solo.

  • @BAMAMARV WOW!!!! YOU KNOW YOUR S$IT!!!!

  • @kngscb - Assuming that wasn't sarcasm, the only reason I know this is because I grew up playing during the 70's & loved the music & the musicians who made it, but thanks for the compliment, I hope. (LOL)

  • GREW UP IN THE 70'S WITH MY PARENTS BUYING THIS & NEVER LET HER SLIP AWAY & WITH HIS PASSING WE HAVE LOST ANOTHER IMMENSE TALENT. GOD BLESS ANDREW.

  • Great song! Too bad it's LQ.. (:

  • i remember hearing this song on the radio for weeks when i was 17 i loved it so much

  • @amybll Yes, things have changed. I am now hearing Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, and other hacks, for weeks at a time at age 39...and am thinking to myself...."Wow, this is crap"

  • @aftershock71 I hear what your saying !!! Didn't music have soooo much more class back then, everything wasn't about me being beautiful and perfect, music now is just so shallow and sleazy really. I'll take my oldies anyday, I'm 46 and I grew up with the best of the best, this song is just a platform for sooo many great , great songs, I could go on all night !!!!!!!!!!! And we did back then just listening .....................

  • @aftershock71 No one cares. If you really want to speak crap about modern artists, at least do it on their fucking videos. Sick of all of these "oh music nowadays is so shit."

Well news; YOUR parents (as a generation) thought that this stuff was sacrilegious bullshit. But you liked it, right? Well, as a teen at the moment, I actually like a lot of chart music, as well as old-school stuff. Don't focus on negative shit, if you're gonna complement a song just do it.

  • Comment removed

  • @aftershock71 ... And? What difference does it make if you're about to be a granddad? Or in fact when you listened to this song? I was just arsed off that people can't just leave artists alone; no matter where you go on youtube, there's always people slagging off modern music. It gets tiring after a while. Why don't you write something creative?

  • @aftershock71 Check my channel, I am 49.. I sometimes like the crap, check the channel!

  • @aftershock71 Couldn't agree more

  • WHAT A TALENTED GUY! IF YOU CAN FIND HIS 60'S TRIBUTE ALBUM, 'FRATERNAL ORDER OF THE ALL' BUY IT. AMAZING PSYCHEDELIC SONGS, SPOT ON BEATLES IMPRESSIONS, ETC. LONELY BOY WAS ONE OF MY FAVE TUNES FROM THE 70'S. RIP ANDREW GOLD.

  • Cracking song!

  • Great

  • How did he die?

  • Comment removed

  • Can't help thinking how this song would have something to do with him departing so young RIP to a truly great artist

  • I just found out from these comments that Andrew has died, and feel gutted. Another "old friend" gone. RIP Andrew.

  • I'm really looking for "How Can This Be Love" by Andrew Gold but can't find it on You tube. Anybody got it? And if you have, can you put it up?

    RIP Andrew Maurice Gold ~ August 2, 1951 ~ June 3, 2011

  • 25 people are lonely

  • Aw man, I remember this! Thanks for postin! RIP Andrew!

  • Making music of this calibre Andrew Gold will never be a lonely boy

  • Thank you. RIP.

  • Brilliant tune with brilliant lyrics..r.i.p mr gold

  • very big talent, but the song is kinda bein self centered because the kid falls apart when his parents have another kid. being an only kid isnt so great. i remember feeling this way when this song came out,& thought ,what i brat hes singin bout. now i know it was himself.. no thumb either way... tommy

  • He was an incredibly gifted songwriter and performer. I'm so glad these videos are available here.

  • Andrew Gold ; pure gold in all he performed!

  • @oddwall77 Agreed. I think his mother was Marnie Nixon famous in her own right. And he is famous in his own. Always loved that boy---and this song.

  • Great performer and song writer. As a tribute my band are playing 'Lonely Boy' tonight at the Red Deer in Croydon.

On this video has anybody noticed Gilbert O'Sullivan (No.1 with 'Clair' , UK charts 1972) playing on keyboards in the background?

  • @philandrews100 Hi, Doubt if thats Gilbert O'Sullivan on keyboards. More likely to be Brock Walsh. A great performance of Lonely Boy though. Fabulous lead guitar solo. I'd love to know the complete band lineup.

  • @glasnevin2009 - Definitely Brock Walsh, no doubt.

  • R.I.P :'( <3

  • BEST SONG EVERRRRRRR! <3

  • WORST LYRICS IN HISTORY ,,,, CAT!

  • @thegamingprinceluke Why do people bother with negative comments, oh I know it's because they're Stupid Fucking Morons, who've never done anything with thier own life.

  • oooooooooh sensitive..........................

  • considering he,s ten years old, we,ll take this comment on the chin as he still has a long long time to do a lot of good things in life, sorri if he dos,nt get ur music!

  • YOU KNOW IN THOSE DAYS I USED HEAR THESE SONGS, BUT NEVER TO MUCH NOTICE,BECAUSE I WAS A SOULBOY,BUT NOW I GO BACK AND LISTEN TO THESE TUNES AND I THINK MAN POP MUSIC WAS SOPHISTICATED IN THOSE DAY COMPARED TO THE SHIT PEOPLE HAVE TO LISTEN NOW. R.I.P. ANDREW.

  • @crouchhill sooo right! kids today have poor taste abd too much pressure to conform with all the others :(

  • 25 people are Lonely Boys.

  • What happenen to this talented singer/musician? How did he die?

  • RIP Andrew. You live on in your music.

  • RIP Andrew.

I can relate to this song, as my so called parents only ever had time for my two sisters!!!

Out of the three of us, i'm the only one who never gave them any problems.

    I feel nothing for them.

  • @100TEEDEE loser!

    get a fucking grip

  • @plopplop1983 you obviously had a happy childhood then?

  • @100TEEDEE not particularly but get over it eh

  • I love this video because it has the lines" goodbye mama, goodbye you, goodbye papa,I'm pushing on through"

On others, it is cut out,,,,but i think it is vital to the song

RIP Mr Gold, and thank you

  • RIP Andrew............A wonderful......(but under appreciated) pop classic.....Yes...So moving in its own special way..................Came into its own on the Boogie Nights soundtrack.....There's a lot of the sadness of Dirk Diggler in there........

  • so sad to hear of his passing. i grew up with his music. loved this one and firefly. it's always tough to see the good ones go !

  • RIP. Now I am more of a lonely boy with your passing...

  • Just found out at powerpoaholic that Andrew died. The Krayolas are fans.

  • RIP Andrew Gold. Amazing songwriter.

  • Rest well, Andrew. Thanks for the music you've given .

  • Andrew Gold was a lot more talented than anybody ever gave him credit for.

  • The Lonely Boy was the greatest!!!

  • Musicians and singers leave us so quickly.

  • I couldn't believe that Andrew Gold had died on June 3rd! Now another one of my favorite artists has died! Sad! Andrew was a gracious man! One time I wrote a letter to him on his web-site and he wrote me back--it concerned the song "Learning the Game", from the album this song now playing came from: the 1976 album "What's wrong with this Picture". It was a beautiful remake of the Buddy Holly song! I only wish I had printed it out, but my printer was probably broken! I'll miss you Mr. Gold!

  • Lonely Boy was my Favorite of his we lost another Great Musician so sad Rest in Peace Andrew and Thanks for the wonderful music and Great Memories .

  • Too young. I'm still sad.

  • RIP Andrew Gold.

  • great song...i loved it then and i still love it

  • RIP, Andrew Gold

  • great talent; thanks Andrew for your musical talents! RIP

  • rip andrew, so so sad, you are a legend and will never be replaced, thank you for the music it will live on...

  • This reminds me of my teenage years in the 70s. The song will live on.

  • RIP Andrew Gold you'll always be with us through this hit song.

  • Rest In Peace, Andrew...

  • @jeanlandim oh shit when did he die so so sad to hear

  • Great song and a very talented guy - I was sorry to read his Obituary in the paper today as I hadn't heard he had died.

I was a young teenager in the mid-70's and have always been fond of his album, "What is wrong with this picture", particularly this track.

Hang in there, Andrew, you will be missed but not forgotten.

  • There once was a man from LA

Who came to Lake Mead to play

With his booze, pot, beer and pills

    He got plenty of thrills

Now at the Lake bottom he will stay

    DROWNING PROHIBITED

That was a series of signs on the way to Lake Mead. Anyone want to guess what year that was?

  • I never knew his name until he passed. To say he is in hell? Must be a youngster saying that but at 50 myself. I will never forget his name now. Its sad I had to learn his name now, this way. I knew the words to a few songs by heart. Cruzing to Lake Meed just out of Las Vegas in my 64 Grand Prix. If there was a hell, he won't be found there. CANT MAKE PEOPLE SING, BE HAPPY AND GO TO HELL.Its the Law.

  • @DC1Wolfman lindawatcher is no youngster, he"s a 46year old jerkoff that has nothin good 2 say bout anything ( look at his channel), a person like that should have thier ass kicked. to say that bout andrew. but u know how some pussys hide behind thier cruel words. regards tommy..were the same age

  • @tommieparch I am not a jerk-off... but I sure do jerk off... alot!... it feeels sooooooo good! HEE HEE HEE

  • Sounds like a combo of Warren Zevon and Steely Dan. In other words, cool.

  • Great, great song...and, actual human beings singing and playing actual instruments...What a concept!

  • hey was awesome singer he will be miss
