Used to fly that route in my fathers Interstate Cadet in winter (12 in 1956), with Mason City as the half-way stop. Lot of turbulance including forced landings so I could take a pee. Once the field mud was so heavy on the wheels it was a miracle we cleared the tree line. Maybe that's why, besides the genious music I learned dance with, I still feel close to Buddy 50 years later?
SO great listening to these wonderful stories about Buddy! And he was so right about "I Guess It Doesn't Matter Anymore" - what a great song, and his version is still the best! And what an eerie story from Tommy Allsup.

8:36 that's not even a plane, that's scrap metal!! :o
I read the coroners report,it's truly horrific. Even though it didn't have pictures,I can't get the image out of my head. Never read that if you don't want the same happening to you.
It's so sad! He was such a nice boy, all of 'em were. Truly awful story :(
I rode in one of those little rickity planes a couple years ago,& it was such a terrible experience. The whole thing must have been really awful to begin with for them :(((
part 10 got tagged with a copyright infringement by Warner Music Group (who doesn't even own the rights, Paul McCartney owns the entire Buddy Holly catalog.)
I'll try to figure out a way to get it on here, but youtube's dispute form wouldn't submit.
In the meantime I think everyone should go out and steal something from Warner Brothers.

I heard Allsup in later interviews say that he flipped the coin, not Valens...

I heard somewhere that supposedly Tommy Allsup's last words to Buddy Holly was
"I hope your plane crashes" O.O
Imagine the poor guy having to live with that in his mind...

Too bad Sir Paul didn't talk to Dion and get the real story about who was going to fly.
