Oh wow...I feel incredibly guilty for never hearing of The Empress. Poor Quebec. It must be horrible to be a country, province, territory, state or any other, because you have to live through the deaths of thousands of people around you...and all you can do is continue to live.
I cried and I'll never forget. What a horrid event. Thank you iammathewian project for bringing forgotten and overlooked aspects of Canadian history to youtube. More people should watch this video. Hetalia does portray Canada as a quiet invisible nation and that gives Canada a reputation of having very little happen there. Then again, even without Hetalia Canada is very overlooked and forgotten.
I am an American who before Hetalia, knew Canada existed and that it was located above the USA as well as that it's flag had a maple leaf on it but never really thought about it. I knew nothing about it's history much less that it was at one point in time was owned by France and then taken by England. I didn't even seem to realize that it could have ever been involved in any sort of battle like WW2 or invasions by America.
After Hetalia I just thought of Canada as a forgotten nation that has participated in the world a little (WW2). Canada is so much more than that. All nations are. From tragedies to wars to alliances and occupations all of the world has suffered and every nation or country from as large as the US, Canada, Russia or as small as Liechtenstein needs to be recognized as its own special and unique country.
You know... I never liked Quebec's character much, and certainly never thought I'd ever feel sorry for Quebec, but... this did it. I started crying when he did, and I want to give him a big hug now.
I don't think I had ever heard of the Empress of Ireland before this, so thank you for opening my eyes to another facet of history that has been lost to time.
I'm really glad you did something on the Empress of Ireland. My great-grandfather came over on the Empress of Ireland, and it sank on the return voyage. Naturally, I have a bit of a personal connection to the story, and it makes me sad that no one ever remembers it. Thank you for the wonderful video! <3
how? why?how.. could i not have known about this? why did we never talk about his in history class? i'm FROM Quebec for Pete's sake! but i will never forget it now.. i promise
I'm a super proud Canadian, like SUPER proud, and none of my teachers ever brought this up in any classes of mine. I'm happy to see you guys did. You guys at the Iammathewianproject taught me more than they ever did. Thank you
I study ships, and she is probably one of the most tragic, all the ones lost but she is so overshaddowed by Titanic and Lusitania that not many remember her.
I didn't know about this event. Thank you for making this video. I really like how Quebec and other characters are developing through this whole series. This was heartbreaking and wonderful at the same time. Oh, and I never thought I'd see Mattie smoke!
Aw, it's so sad. As an American, it reminds me of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I know it's probably nothing to compare but I was just reminded of it.
Well written and presented, very respectful toward such tragedy. And even sadder that this was forgotten, or never even heard of, by many. Thank you for bringing this event to our hearts and minds.
On a technical note, the music was very nice, but there were sound-balancing issues, so the voices were hard to hear at times (might need captions or annotation-subs), and the water sound was very loud compared to the rest. The drawings are nice, especially hands in the last few.
I'm Reeeeeally sorry I know this is supposed to be completely heartwrenching and all....But the Music Drowned out half of Quebec and Canada's Lines! I could barely hear anything! DX

I really didn't know about that...is so sad that many who know forget, and the ones who did not know stay in shadows about the event...
Is truthfully a great video and the fact that Mattie smokes only gives gravity to the situation...
May they rest in peace...

I hadn't heard of this either, which is probably the saddest part, the fact that it was so easily forgotten.
With there be other videos on events like this? What about the Halifax Explosion?
