  • Still my favourite race of all time. What a horse to win the gold cup and champion hurdle. They said the horse was a bitch and would kick you as quick as look at you, she showed her fight in this race. Pity the owner over ran her and ever sent her to the fields of france.

  • Don't normally shed a tear at sporting events but remember doing so at the time. 25 years on and it's still emotive. Great, great horse.

  • Guest what guys you no she was a novice Chase for those people who are still don't no the meaning of novice it's horse racing turm for first year chaser or Hurdler but Dawn Run was a first year chaser and she whon would you be it in her first year

  • RIP PADDY. you wer a genious trainer! you won the gold cup wit DAWN RUN for the irish,by god did they celebrate after in da pubs that nite, and for da rest of the year as well.your sons ar followlin in your footsteps,! gone but never for gotton!

  • Jonjo's 'little beauty' indeed! First 4 in that GC deserve the highest praise. Gave their all. Great trainer; great horse; great jockey. thank you

  • Jonjo = LEGEND

  • Heroic effort by Jonjo & Dawn Run but Brad & Wayward Lad would have won at level weights. Mares allowances create false results. DR was in her 8YO prime & WL, as Peter said, was a veteran 11YO. This remains the best Gold Cup performance by an 11YO since Mandarin won in the early 60s.

  • To win a Champion Hurdle and a Gold Cup is pretty special, in my opinion; a fantastic mare.

  • Run and skip was a brave horse, pity no videos of him on here winning the welsh national.

  • Great horse, will not mention the stupid owner. She was the horse who got me into racing and trained by a legend

  • jonjo is my boss

  • RIP Paddy Mullins. You great training feats will never be forgotten.

  • Paddy Mullins RIP

  • Hey rockin music man. The hill sorted out the Woman from the boys. She outstayed him simple as. Wayward lad only drifted cos he had given everything in fairness to him. It was a legend of a finish

  • Great horse - very saddening when she died later that year.

  • i loved dawn run but boy i betted always on wayward lad shame he never won the gold cup

  • rockinmusicman - like you, I was there but it doesnt matter, DR ran a straight and true race unlike WL who got tired and wandered like 100s of race horses before him. Strange comment my friend.

  • rockmusician with the greatest respect - you didnt have to be there to see that WL wandered - DR didnt wander, she ran a straight and true race which won the race. Many many many races have been won in similar circumstances my friend whether you were there or not!

  • wayward lad saw the hill and had enough

  • I was there and if Wayward had not wandered across course he would have won 2 gold cups

  • dawn run is a forgoten horse.its all denman, kauto star, arkle.great horses no doubt but dawn run is up there with these, make no mistake some of the best horses ever ran in the 80's,golden years in national hunt racing

  • Can anyone see Solwit winning a Gold Cup or Kauto Star winning a Champion Hurdle like she did??! How many 3 milers are champion hurdle horses? And How many Champion Hurlde horses would win a Gold Cup??? She was a freak of nature.... unreal talent and ability! One of my first and favorite memories of Cheltenham..

  • i had the forcast here 9/4 and 9/1.wayward lad was a class class horse but just hated that cheltenham hill.2 awsome horses

  • It's highly unlikely that this truly incredible feat will ever be repeated. To win a Champion Hurdle AND a Gold Cup really does take an exceptionally versatile and talented horse to achieve. Dawn Run certainly filled those criteria. Sadly she was to lose her life in Paris a few months later. A wonderful race mare!

  • This horse showed tremendous courage to win this gold cup and it is still is as good today to watch it as it was when i ran home from school 23 years ago to see it on the bbc and listen to the commentary from the voice of racing.

  • wow over the second last- whips up, one handed jumping- what a game little mare! x

  • Still wish wayward lad would have hung on, what a great horse he was. he was the greatest jumper ive ever seen

  • I Can still remember running home from school to see this race ..and tears running down my eyes as she crossed the line..

    Blast from the past indeed...

    Thanks...

  • Wow! What a mare!

  • What a Mare ! ! ! ....2 out she was well beaten...but dug deep and ran on with all of her heart and soul.....stunning !

  • i was there that day and im in the crowd in this clip. i also backed wayward lad. 3 lengths clear over the last..and lost it.

  • classic national hunt history great video unforgetable race magic mare and jockey

  • Dawn Run, the Greatest jumping racing Mare of all time.

  • Everytime I watch this race I still think Wayward Lad's going to win but the mare does him on the line. The lad never quite got the trip in the Gold Cup but was nearly unbeatable everywhere else. You could argue that the weight allowance was crucial in the end! Great race all the same, four in line jumping the last, fantastic memories of a golden era for NH racing.....

  • rip girl

  • Maybe its because I was a kid but it just looks so much better then than now.

    Denman for todays race

  • i was heart broken when i saw this i put a bet on wayward lad and it would of been great to see him win it ,but he was by a great horse in dawn run so what memories

  • Go on Dawn Run!!! I remember when she broke her neck in that Hurdle race bloody horrible R.I.P.!!!

  • Forgive 'n' Forget would have won this race on the bridle if he'd been race fit.

  • The greatest racing year with the great Dawn run and the great Dancing brave in 1986

  • If I remember correctly Dawn Run died not long after this race

  • She was killed instantly in June of that year when breaking her neck in a fall at the 5th last in the French Champion Hurdle. Being only 8 years of age at the time, it was a terrible tragedy.

  • Was her last race prior to tha t the fall at Aintree.

What a win - she beat a great field. Looking forward to my 1st Cheltenham trip this year

  • spot on !

  • @sjc14031974 yes dawn run died in france broke her neck that year

  • Winning the Champion Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup Steeplechase like Dawn Run did is an incredible achievement.

  • Surely the most exciting finish to a Gold Cup ever?

  • Some Mare, always enjoy watching this race over and over again. She was special.

  • For SO many reasons this is my favourite race to watch. Wayward Lad was nearing the end of his fantastic career having never won the Gold Cup, and even if you hadnt backed him that day you were almost begging him to make it up the hill after he took it up at the last fence. Alas, the mighty Dawn Run had other ideas, and it could only have been such an extraordinary horse to deny Wayward Lad that day. Wayward Lad was,and probably always will be, the best jumper of a fence I ever saw.

  • If you could see the race head on as i did Dawn Run was a lucky winner .Had Wayward not wandered across the course he would have won

  • first horse in history to win the champion hurdle gold cup double...thats not luck thats greatness...what an idiot you are
