I've just discovered this from the Transatlantic Sessions (BBC I think) from Scotland. BEAUTIFUL song, and lovely sentiment. One of my top 5 songs I've discovered this year.

I agree also. There was no need to add anymore layers to this song. It was perfect as it is here. JT has always been best alone with his guitar anyway.
I just finished reading 'Borstal Boy', a great first-hand history of the IRA in the early 20th century. I think JT was thinking of such things, perhaps.

Agreed for the most part. I like the bagpipes, but I do like this version w/out the drums. Simpler is usually better and more profound when it comes to music, IMO.

Yup, it was 2002. This is from 1998. I prefer this version over the October Road one. No, drums, choir or synthesized bagpipes.
