baseball bats and cricket bats have to be made of wood to preserve the integrity of the game. Tennis didn't do that, they said make rackets out of anything. This is the reason why todays tennis is rubbish. Anyone with a bit of talent , not a lot, can learn to smash groundstrokes. So the winners are the ones with superior fitness and who have sold their souls and just do it longer than the others. That's not tennis.
Remember seeing this match live. It was even better than the highlights. Lots of drama as these 2 were bitter rivals. Mac may not have had the best career statistically, but I think he was one of, if not the most talented players I have ever seen. I would take him in his prime vs Fed or Nadal anytime. That would be a great dream match!
I have been wondering why I watched tennis in the past but not now. This reminds me why. I watched tennis in the past because of people like Connors and McEnroe. You could see everything , talent, gamesmanship, emotions, and some humour too.

im not sure there will ever be tennis like this again....nothing but a bunch of one-dimensional baseline robots nowdays....too bad the power just got to be too much, serve/volley has been extinct since Sampras retired.....this rivalry was ferocious, Mac was the greatest talent ever....thanks for the video post
@nabeshabu Really? Connors one 3 slams in '74, and swept all 6-sets in the finals of Wimb and US Open. Wilander won 3-slams in '89 Steffi Graff wins Grand Slam and Olympic Gold in '88. McEnroe had a dominant year, but hardly the best ever
@vighnaharta There are few other quality players, like David Nalbandian. But you're right, most top players are all about power, mostly serving, nothing else.
He didnt. He said Federer and Nadal apart, meaning everyone else but not them.
That being said, I would very much like to say that to have the overall standard today is lacking. Federer is the exception, but his skill is overshadowed by his lack of brains as he continuously plays to Nadal's (aka the 2 shot wonder) strengths.
@alin1975 Well,i feel like a total idiot since i misread what he typed :P
Anyways,i believe that the game has also changed quite a bit.Nowadays players come up with lethal shots and that's due to the improved equipment and training routines. That makes it more difficult for the average player to establish a good point.I see what you mean though.
now this is some tennis!! great passing shots, volleys, serving and all around hitting! lol at the end tho, you can tell theres no love loss between those two with that end game handshake!!

Getting into a volley war up close to the net with a prime JMAC... not a good idea

McEnroe vs. Connors and Borg vs. McEnroe or Connors is vastly more enjoyable to watch than Federer vs. Nadal.

I wanted Connors to win this one, though McEnroe prevailed. The latter's was the greatest year of any tennis player ever :D

@nabeshabu I think Tilden was more dominant in his prime, according to stats.

rapid fire tennis with a serve and volley clinic by Mac and some of the greatest stamina displayed by Connors...this is tennis at its best.

One of the best matches ever.... really beats the utter mediocrity out there today (Federer and Nadal apart)....

That shot from Connors at 4:10 was sick!!!
And Mac Enroe's volleys are so quick and accurate (2:50 and 3:30)... probably the best volleyer of all time!

McEnroe's forehand DTL at 36 is what's cool.
KingCast65 3 years ago
sick reflexes by McEnroe at 3:28... and he doesn't even move he's just standing there.

Though one can be impressed by Connors passing-shots and returns!
