Andrea's Story: A Hitchhiking Tragedy (1)

In the 1970s & 80s, hitchhiking posed a serious threat to America's youth. It was up there with drug abuse, pregnancy, and suicide. Thus the need for programs such as this 1983 Afterschool Special. These lessons may have spared many lives and traumas. To dumb down the subject matter so that all children got the point, parents (and most adults) were turned into total f***ing a-holes in these specials. Oh, and just the right music was on cue to tap emotions.

you know what this movie does? reiterates how stupid teenagers are...as long as it took them to get from one place to another, they could have waited on the bus. lol! (seriously, no offense to the teens out there, but you've got to admit that was pretty stupid. besides, i was a teen once too and boy did i make a mountain of mistakes. i'm still paying for some of them.) i think i will make my 15 year old watch this film, at times, she can be too carefree.

The ABC Afterschool Specials sure take me back to when I was in elementary school.I watched a lot of them and always looked forward to them on Wednesdays after General Hospital.

This is based on a ya book 'Did you Hear what Happened to Andrea?' and it's SUPER candy-coated down. A lot of bad changes. A BIG one--in the book her friends find her immediately after her attack, & take her straight to the police. You learn what a rape kit is about, and how the victim must not wash, go to the bathroom, be tested & prodded. Not pretty, but crucial. Maybe that was too much for an 80's show, hence the cliquy 'strong shower' instead. This was sooo lame. Read the book, though.

@Voshk Unlike now, back then a girl might date more than one guy and would definitely not be sleeping with any of them. You would only sleep with someone once you decided to go exclusive and things had gotten "serious." That's why parents preferred that a girl didn't date any one boy exclusively. But actually, even that was pretty retro for this time period. Things were still in transition.

I can't believe this aired in 1983. The clothes and hairdoes look more like 1979 and on top of that, by 1983 most young girls and women knew hitchhiking was really dangerous and didn't do it any more. And yeah, if you get raped, DON'T take a shower, go right to the police station, especially now that we have DNA testing (which didn't exist then or at least not as good as it is now).

My best friend's father, during my childhood years, started his family later in life, probably due to the fact that he became a very good, popular, and well-respected doctor. He's probably about 10-years older than my father, but, anyway, he always told us about his "trip" to California. He always said, in those days, that there was no need to worry about strangers, and, one summer, he traveled as a hitchhiker all the way from PA to CA, and came back the same way, totally unscathed!

I cannot believe I did this, I have no excuse other than I was young and stupid, but I was driving along a deserted mountain road around 2-3 AM and picked up FOUR guys. They turned out to be really nice to me and there were no incidents but in later years I looked back on this as the supreme idiocy of my teen years.

@skylur44 I know what you mean. When I was 19 yrs old I got into a car with 3 guys, who luckily were very nice to me. I was at a bus stop and they asked me if I needed a ride. I said, yeah and got in a like an idiot. Thank God, they just dropped me off at my house. Wow! Teenagers are dumb.

The mom's logic is sorta like, back then it was assumed good girls didn't do casual sex. Girls were supposed to save themselves for someone they really loved. Dating just one boy = serious relationship = sex = possible teenage pregnancy = quitting school and more problems. Dating multiple boys casually (as in no sex just hanging out or whatever) means she'd theoretically be less likely to develop serious intimacy with any one particular boy and more likely to save herself for "the one" later on

My own pers exp,hitchhiking is a bad move.I accep'd a ride, just a few short blocks&got the life scared outta me.I was young, dumb&bored.I figured my town was safe enuf that nothing could go wrong,after all,I was ONLY going a few blocks.The guy startd askng me odd questions then droppd me off about 15 mins later at my destination.His last words 2 me were "dont ever get into a car with a stranger"& he drove off.He was trying to scare me&it worked.I never did anything that stupid again!
